Would have been great to see this without a scientific calculator- like when taking a USCG exam. Otherwise thx for the video, very informative

Because of the coming micronova, declination is moving much farther, and much faster and so declination information is likely incorrect My up-to-date declination is 30 degrees, 15 degrees off from the official declination for my area. but there is still a way to recalibrate magnetic declination using the shadow of sticks recording the path of the sun---rotation of the earth has not yet changed. First stick will show East. Mark it with a sharp stick pushed in. After a few minutes you can mark sun shadow travel where the shadow has moved - Push another stick in to mark West. Lay a straight stick from the E mark to the W mark. Geographic north or True North is 90 degrees from the E-W line. With your compass pointing toward True North, note how far off your compass is now. That is your true up-to-date declination. More on micronova in my 2nd book, Surviving the Micronova: This Train Is on the Tracks is available now.

Very important that you should know which one is the variation of the given date and the annual change of variation because we should always multiply the total amount of years to the the annual change of variation. Thanks

Correct way is to add if the varation of the given date and annual change in variation has the same direction and subtract if different

would you ever increase easterly and decrease westerly?

You would do that when taking a compass magnetic bearing to the map. When you look up the magnetic variance (aka magnetic declination) on an online website. The magnetic variance is given assuming you are taking a magnetic compass bearing and want to correct it to the proper bearing to be used on the map. That is why an East variance is given as positive degrees, and West variance is given as negative degrees. For example. If your compass reading is 70˚, and the mag, variance is 10˚East, on the map you would use a bearing of 80˚. If instead the mag. variance was 10˚W [ = - 10˚]. On the map you would use a bearing of 60˚. But, if you're only calculating the change in magnetic variance over time, due to the position of the magnetic pole changing. [which was the purpose of the video] Then no. If mag. variance increases eastward, then the the magnetic bearing will decrease. And if the mag, variance increases westward, then the magnetic bearing will increase.

Here are the rules for adding/subtracting variation:- For Easterly variation -- Magnetic to Grid: add Grid to Magnetic: subtract For Westerly variation -- Magnetic to Grid: subtract Grid to Magnetic: add
