It reminds me of my 8th grade English teacher, who told us that for every new vocabulary word we learn we have to use it in 3 different sentences, in conversation throughout the week, so we remember the words. And even with that information, I still can't remember certain words. I once looked up a word in the dictionary and found a word I didn't know the meaning of, so I had to look that one up and when I did, I found the FIRST word I didn't know. The words were impudent & insolent and I didn't figure out the meaning until I met Andrew, the British lexicographer who puts words in Oxford English Dictionary & he told me that's called "creating circular word entries" and you're not supposed to do it. OED DOESN'T do it. I used Webster's before that,
@InteractiveEng5 жыл бұрын
Hi Vicki. Thanks for sharing with us. You're right. Building vocabulary is ongoing process. And I feel like I constantly forget words, especially when I'm actively trying to learn another language. That's interesting about the dictionary - creating circular entires. Funny enough, I usually find definitions that contain a different part of speech of the word I'm looking up. This happened recently when I was putting together the adverb quiz. I wanted to see the how the dictionary defined "deliberately" and one entry said something like "the act of being deliberate." 😅
