@@StephenTaylorDrums I never cared about a gender in music. I mean, let's take the early Bolt Thrower, where the bassist, Jo-Anne Bench, was immediately among my favourite bass players. One issue with drummers (in general, this is for all sexes) is, that they are mostly left in the dark, somewhere deep behind the rest of the band, both on stage as in interviews. Lars is THE rule breaker in that part. Thank GOD for that, I mean, think of Hetfield as the face of Slayer... This, I think, also is part of this phenomena where males usually are more known. I liked Wanda Day as well, as drummer. Playing for Led Zeppel... no wait, what band was that? :P

Karen Carpenter started out as most great drummers do, playing Jazz, she was in the RC Trio with her brother and they won 2x in a row at the Hollywood Bowl, some of their tunes can be heard right on You Tube. Karen could not understand Bonham's indignance, she said" I don't know why he is coming down on me, we play Zep songs in the studio to jam too."

She was my nominee (I mentioned I had one in reply to another comment). Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks she's phenomenal. She played on The Black Page, a notoriously difficult drum/percussion solo. The drum solo was actually played by Terry Bozzio, but on Live in New York there's an “teenage New York, easy listening” version (Zappa's words in the introduction) in which she plays marimba. Not only does she have to deal with the insanely complicated poly and cross rhythms, but she has to play the melody too.
@MARSRAM3 жыл бұрын
Yes I wanted to mention Ruth Underwood also. Then I remembered, … wait she plays Xylophone (well, it looks like Marimba is the accurate instrumental term) & Percussion. I remember an interview where she said she & Zappa had to have her marimbas fashioned with an output jack so it could be amplified on tour.

Stephen, thank you for this very important video recognizing these amazingly talented and ground-breaking women. And for emphasizing the message about Karen Carpenter's body dysmorphia around trying to retain her place as a musician by having what was considered the "right look." I was heartbroken when she passed and also shocked, because we were about the same age. Something extremely important about her passing was the wake-up call it gave me, and hopefully other women. For that, I am forever grateful to her because, as a former dancer, I was also bulimic. It was a very common practice in the dance world in order to remain at an impossibly unrealistic weight. When Karen Carpenter died it was a wake-up call for me to seek counseling in order to stop doing that self-destructive practice.

@drsamurai0094 жыл бұрын
Don't beat yourself up (sorry, no pun intended there.) I'm a middle aged, male keyboardist and your video made me think about the list of top keyboard players. I came across two lists quickly on a google search. One was the top 27(?) and no women were on that list. The next was top 100, plus like 30-40 honorable mentions. Without knowing every keyboardist on that list, most of them show the band they were in and with that reference, I don't recall seeing a single woman in the list, even WITH the additional honorable mentions. I get some names like Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman or Elton John. But Alicia Keys wasn't on the list and that really surprised me. Shelia E. is probably the only female drummer I've ever seen pop up on All-Time drummer lists and I'll bet most (modern) players don't even know Karen Carpenter played drums, much less her mad skills. Honestly I was a little too young to know much about her during her life/career and I'm a bit embarrassed to have learned only some 10 years or so ago that she was such a great drummer. Lately I find myself being blown away by a lot of young kids on KZbin and many of the drummers are women (or quite literally girls.) There's a young woman, Sina, from I believe Germany. She usually shoots multiple camera angles so I can see her footwork. Helpful since I just picked up an acoustic kit for the first time a couple years ago and I'm just learning how to play. Very skilled and covers some great classic rock songs more my generation. Chiara Cotugno, forgive me I'm not sure of her nationality, but another drummer playing some classic rock songs. And two really young kids that just crush it are Yoyoka who is I think less than 10 (well for sure she was when she slammed out Led Zeppelin's Good Times, Bad Times) and Senri Kawaguchi. Mind bending to see two drummers not even old enough to drive a car, command a drum kit like these two! Sadly the lack of all time players lists without women is the majority. I played in a band with a woman on bass guitar for almost 10 years. While she was not a song writer, she could read music and often covered orchestra parts in local theater productions without any more than, here's the sheet music... can you sit in this afternoon? My band played hard rock/metal by night so to say she could play most anything is massive understatement. I would encourage all kids no matter the race or gender to get into music as young as possible. From social skills to math and so much in between, it will help you grow spiritually and ever which way!

Karen Carpenter has NEVER gotten her due as a drummer. And Viola Smith opened the door for female drummers-and never got proper credit for it in the drumming community, either. This is NOT to minimize the talent and chops of the others on your list. As you admitted, there had been NO female drummers on anyone’s top drummer lists, including your own. It would be appropriate (not to mention awesome) if you would make a list of up and coming female drummers. Though there are several others, I recommend that you start with Sina Doering. On her channel, she covers mainly classic rock, but throws in other types of music from time to time. Meytal Cohen is another one you should check out. She tends to cover hard rock and metal (thus the pun on her first name). I could go on and on, but you get the point. It’s sad (not to mention frustrating and angering) that now in the 21st century, we still have this problem. I guess nobody was listening to women’s lib, now where they???!!

This is great! I knew most of these amazing drummers, rocked Evelyn Glennies Vic Firth sticks back in the 90s, Sheila E is a still a huge crush of mine (and she knows LOL) Teri Lynn used to just dominate back on Arsenio and is still a monster. I learned about all the others and now have some great albums to pick up, thanks Stephen!

Stephen, this video is amazing. Such cool, passionate way of sharing great artists. I think I loved every single time you made one of these, but this one feels like a huge step towards new horizons. Thank you SO Much for the recommendations of videos and albums on so many different genres!! I wonder if you could start making interviews with people you cite in these lists, it would be truly groundbreaking!!!

This is awesome! Thank you for sharing this. I’m also amazed that you record with 3-4 different eye-catching backgrounds that shift multiple times in the same sentence. And your voice is super engaging!

I have to say this is pretty much a video that needed to be made imo One of those being Shelia E who really was my first female drummer I discovered and really introduced me to funk drumming More female drummers need recognition in the community thanks for the inspiration

Very cool upload! I have three daughters and my youngest (almost 2 year old) love the drums....hoping she continues to pursue it when she is older :)

Interesting video. I am surprised you left out Ann "Honey" Lantree drummer for the 1960s British pop group The Honeycombs. She was fantastic in The Honeycombs number one hit "Have I The Right?".

Great video!! And an inspiration for women drummers! I'm the first female percussionist to receive my diploma in Geneva Conservatoire 25 years ago. It has been a difficult journey with a very over dominated masculine percussion world and I've been through a lot of sexism. Keiko Abe : first female percussionist in Japan that inspired and taught a whole generation of percussionists. Ruth Underwood played for Frank Zappa.

Very well done, sir! Particularly your observational connection between Moe Tucker and Karen Carpenter. Everyone in your list deserves to be there. If I may, here are a few “honorable mention” suggestions: Kimberly Thompson (Check Out the Mike Stern album, Who Let The Cats Out? - it’s stellar) Emmanuelle Caplette Allison Miller Gina Schock (The Go Gos) Dawn Richardson (4 Non Blondes) Sherrie Maricle Samantha Maloney (subbed for Tommy Lee and made him look like a chump) Senri Kawaguchi Meytal Cohen

4 Non Blondes suck but I'll absolutely agree with you on Schock for the Go-Gos. They got the beat.

Thank you Stephen for this wonderful array of fantastic female drummers. I’m a Karen Carpenter fan and you got her right and did her justice. I think she was the only one who simultaneously sang and drummed but when she went wild on the drums she did stop singing. Also one of you mention drummed for Chaka Khan. But you didn’t mention on a side note that Chaka was the drummer for Rufus before she went to the front as the singer. Wonderful job you did here! Joe

Dude, this video is great. I have 5 and 7 year old girls. They are quite adept with rudiments, as I keep pushing. Not enough women are recognised, for often being better than the Male counterpart in the art of drums. Thanks for the video!

I’m glad to say I knew majority of these great drummers except for 3. As a fan of Prince, Sheila E has been on my radar for decades Anika Nilles I remember seeing on KZbin about 6 years ago with her song “Wild Boy” and I’ve been keeping up with her ever since Cindy Blackman I knew for years since her time with Lenny Kravitz. Karen Carpenter still makes my jaw drop with her drumming skills and I feel she really started to struggle with her self esteem once she left her comfort zone of the kit, it seemed like she didn’t want to be out front but behind her kit Viola Smith I learned about a few years ago and the only video of she playing I watch a lot. Terri and Nikki I know but not as well as the others but Evelyn, Moe, and Jody I haven’t had the chance to listen to but thanks for sharing them with me, I’ll check them out

My daughter plays drums though I suggested piano. But she's so cool and easy with her playing. I so respect her choice.

Impressive list of women drummers who r all great in their own right--but some honorable mentions: Sarah Thawer,Senri Kawaguchi, Jen Ledger, Hannah Ford-Welton, Caroline Corr,Dawn Richardson, Helen De La Rosa, Stella Mozgawa, Samantha Maloney, Meytal Cohan, Paulina Villarreal, Kimberly Thompson, Vera Figueiredo, Cherisse Osei ,Viki Rizk , Emmanuelle Capplette, Michelle Baptiste,Ana Barreiro, Mia Kayleigh,Aisha Gaillard,Cora Dunham--all great drummers

YEEESSS CAROLINE CORR!!! She might not be one the best female drummers out there (considering she's been in a major group band The Corrs, instead of solo drumming career) but she's one of the most popular, maybe not so much in US but whole other parts of the world, and awesome in her own way and music. Check out one of this performance of her kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4SogZ17r6ijitE

Now this is a list I can get down with. Real chops, not just putting someone on a list because their band is popular and saying things like "She is great, her playing is simple because that's what the song calls for".

Autolux/Drummer Carla Azar from Autolux! Incredible! Producer, Songwriter, and the MOST amazing drummer I've ever heard. Nobody can touch her! All Guys...All Ladies...John Bonham...Shiela E....bow down to Carla Azar! I've seen her live and her rudiments are insane! Her feel and touch behind drums is emotional, elegant, and powerful! My favorite drummer of all-time! She's very unique and I think no one can copy her style! Thank you Carla. I love love love John Bonham, Shiela E., Don Henley, Jon Theodore, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Brooks Wackerman, Josh Freese, Danny Carey, and soooo many!!! Carla wins!

Love this. I retired from playing pro for the most past in 2016 but I was a pro female drummer for 25 years. Back when I started, with no KZbin, I didn’t know of many chicks to look up to back then. Starting today would be so fantastic with all the resources and influencers you can see!

a pretty good list, as the top among women. i want to ask a question about your opinion on the modern drummer article you mentioned. would any of the ladies of your video be better than the least of the men in the modern drummer list? i haven't read it (it's behind a paywall) so i don't know who's on it. also i want to say that those articles, just the ones rolling stone put's out about guitarists, rock singers, etc. are really only good for one thing: starting arguments on the internet. there's always people who are ranked way better than they actually are, because they were commercially successful. there's always insanely talented people who rank low on the list or not at all because the person who wrote the article doesn't listen to their music much, or doesn't like them. also, there are lots of unknown players (any instrument you care to choose) that are just as good as many of the people, man or woman, who would end up on lists in a magazine. there's usually an 8 year old japanese girl here on youtube, who can smoke 98% of the rest of us on our best day. and do it smiling, with all the charm that comes from being a little kid. either way, i have long admired may of the players on your list, and i'm not even a drummer. your list was a good one, i enjoyed watching.
