I saw an exhibit of most of Kandinsky's work at the Atlanta Art Museum way back in the early 80's. What amazed me was the pre-painting blueprints of all his works. Every line drawn out like an architect. His paintings were not " free form " in any way. Every line, circle, shape and color were all pre-chosen and carefully laid out. Just like his clothing. The exhibit was most enlightening. I felt very honored and especially blessed to have been able to see his inner workings of the man I admired so much.

I went to the Guggenheim in NYC and saw his exhibition there and I was speechless. I have never felt so connected with any other artist or paintings. His work just spoke to me. I'm a science guy but I go to art to relax. It was the best experience I've had in a museum. The way the exhibit was set up to match the Guggenheim architecture was the cherry on the top.

Dear Ana: Don't feel so sorry for him. It sounds like he was a "trust fund baby" who never really needed to work for a living, so he was hardly a "starving artist". The fact that he even wore suits while he painted showed how he flaunted his affluence. I love Kandinsky's work too, but it sounds like painting is what he did while he wasn't spending his inheritance.

Actually, Kandinsky was amazed with the fact that you can read a music partiture and play it anywhere in the world, as opposed to languages. He synthetized this concept with the idea that white and black dots can transmit feelings and emotions. This was the drive that made him experiment with his art and gradually move away from established forms, to an abstract medium to transmit feelings and emotions. Just for that, he was one of the most underrated genius of the last century. Picasso concerning shape, Matisse concerning color and Kandinsky concerning the concept.
@ArtHistorySchool4 жыл бұрын
That is a very interesting comment. He was very much a genius.
@wysiwyg24894 жыл бұрын
@@ArtHistorySchool These concepts are in his books, Concerning the Spiritual in Art and Point and Plane to Plane. There is a great book in Spanish called Retrospective View which contains some of his letters to Gabrielle and fragments of other books which clearly picture -No pun intented- his thinking.

Love Kandinsky's abstractions but recently have really become enamored with his landscapes - which when viewed provide a sense of Kandinsky's brilliance with color. But even as his work prior to the Blue Ryder period became more abstract, show Kandinsky's superb drawing ability. In one of several books I own of Kandinsky, he recounts how one day coming home to his studio saw one of his paintings through the window lit differently than he was used to viewing it, inspired him to create the more abstract paintings he would become famous for.

Sir a great video very well presented I enjoy watching it and listening I would like to point out to one important fact about the great painter which was not mentioned Kandinsky had a rare ability called Synesthesia that means connecting two senses together When he heard music he could see colours and shapes in his minds eye So certain sounds were connected to certain colours like trumpets to colour yellow or lower tones of bass to darker blue So that how it is with a group of instruments Also by hearing certain notes on a single instrument that would create splashes of colours different for each note That ability is the most envied among artists Most of people would love to have it cause its an unreal experience There is study being done on a large scale about this phenomenon Babies can develop this ability and very young children if properly trained That helped him to create these wonderful paintings He played music and was a gifted violin player in his teenage years That All makes sense This condition is found mostly among artists like musicians painters designers But even people who are not into arts have this ability not even realizing it A lot of them think there is something wrong with them or that it's no big deal cause they think that everyone has it That's not the case only 4 percent of people have it So that's like winning lotto jackpot and not knowing about it
@ArtHistorySchool3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I was aware of his Synaesthesia. You can see, when reading his book on the Spiritual in Art that a lot of his theories would not have been possible without the condition.

Kandinski was a major influence on my work since I first learned about him in art school in the 1970s. And, would you consider doing a video of Gabriel Munter? I didn't learn a thing about her until just a few years ago. That's a sad thing because I believe she was a superior artist in her own right :) I'd love to learn as much about her as I can, and perhaps see more of her paintings. I have a board on Pinterest dedicated to her - and to Kandinski, too, of course. And, to many other artists, as well. If I had the access to all the images i now have on my Pinterest site, wow! Art History would have been so much more relevant for my own development as an artist.

This is a very tough lesson. You can be that thorough, understanding, interested, committed and dedicated and prolific and f**ing profound, subject to the fates and the furies and you die in obscurity only for everyone else to catch up later. The super tasteful French took us Brancusi but remained blind to Kandinsky. Your excellent presentation was brilliant and I learned something. I always thought or imagined that he had been a runaway success during his lifetime, but then to be labelled "degenerate" is a certain level of recognition and that period of art in Germany was really pushing the envelope. Did he work on colour theory alongside or with Paul Klee or were they thinking about it separately?
