I feel like the anti-Barbie trend has some underlying internalized misogyny in its own right. Ruth Handler, Barbie's inventor who affectionately referred to herself as Barbie's mother, got the idea for Barbie from seeing her young daughter and her friends play with paper dolls and imagine them as college students, cheerleaders, or career women. She actually wanted Barbie to be an alternative to the baby dolls that dominated the children's doll market up to that point, because she wanted to give little girls an alternative to wife and mother when imagining their futures in their play. Lammily in particular I think misses the mark because it's so focused on what grownups want children to be, while the original idea behind Barbie was letting kids, girls in particular, get to imagine for themselves what they could be. TL/DR: Handler named Barbie and Ken after her daughter and son, Nikolay Lamm named Lammily after himself.

She also used a German novelty doll as a basic design for Barbie. While I agree that Ruth Handler saw how much her daughter and her friends wanted a more grown-up doll to play with, the initial idea for Barbie came from Bild Lily - a novelty doll based on a cartoon in the German Bildzeitung at that time who was meant for adults rather than kids.

I feel like parents and other adults project their thoughts on to children. Kids do not care, I had Barbie’s and I never desired to look like Barbie. Little kids also don’t look at dolls and sexualize them, that is adults.

I find it so strange that, with Lammily in particular, there's this weird criticism towards being overly feminine, if that makes sense? Like, there's something "wrong" or "problematic" about little girls who love pink and glitter because it's not "realistic". I can't say for every little girl on the planet, but I think if I saw dolls like Lammily as a child then I'd honestly feel kinda sad. Almost like there's something wrong with a kid wanting to imagine their doll as a pink movie star or fairy. This isn't the 1950's anymore, not every toy *has* to be a educational tool.

Exactly!! The great thing about dolls is that they encourage kids to be imaginative, trying to add 100% realism to a doll actually kind of takes away from the positive effects they have, especially if kids keep hearing that being unrealistic is some sort of terrible thing. Also, a lot of kids would never think about Barbie’s proportions at all if it wasn’t constantly being mentioned by the media around them. I never thought I was supposed to look like Barbie as a kid, I just liked having a little toy person to act out fun ideas with!

I keep asking myself: Does a doll really need to be realistic? As you said, Barbie is just a tool for imaginative play, as a child when I played with my Barbies they were always protagonists of fairy tales with princesses, fairies and mermaids, so the most unrealistic and far from reality stories I never cared about Barbie's body, I just looked at her face, hair and clothes I liked the Bratz just because they were totally disproportionate, it was their absurd proportions that made them fun. I NEVER wanted reality, I wanted something glamorous, over the top Because children dream big Those who criticize Barbie are frustrated and dissatisfied adults who waste their time criticizing harmless things

Barbie’s body was created with ridiculous proportions to make fun of the ridiculous beauty standards women were putting on themselves back then and now as well. Having an hourglass figure isn’t even unrealistic, it’s just not easily achievable for a lot of women.

People who get upset over the unrealistic body standards of classic barbie puzzle me somewhat. They seem to forget that she is a FASHION doll. The fashion is what is meant to sell the doll. When you look on the runway, the models are often described as "human hangars" for the clothes. I look at barbie the same

This is so true. As someone who is learning to make doll clothes, I can tell you for certain that dolls MUST have unrealistic proportions, because making outfits at a tiny scale is incredibly difficult. Normal seams look bulky. Normal draping looks bulged on a doll body. A normal proportion doll looks positively pregnant (or blessed with a massive beer gut) in doll clothing - not that there's anything wrong with that, if it's your aesthetic. But if you want fashion, the bodies are going to look a little weird.

I also find it interesting how in the beginning, people criticized Barbie for the fact that she had a career other than being a housewife and was supposedly teaching their daughters loose morals. (And then Mattel made Midge and people freaked out about the pregnant Midge doll because she was 'too young', so they really couldn't win.)

But the fact that mattel has stayed in business all these years shows that even with the negativity and controversy surrounding them there are still way more people who are perfectly happy with them and enjoy the dolls. It’s a real shame that Barbie gets as much scrutiny regarding her body, when action man, GI Joe or every other action figure escapes the criticism of looking like they are steroid junkies. There is a misogynistic element to this. Either way, when I was a child I didn’t look at Barbie as inspiration for aesthetic goals. In fact, the complaints comes from adults projecting their own insecurities & frustrations onto Barbie. That said, these anti-Barbies tend to not sell well and eventually become discontinued because they aren’t nice to look at. I’m sorry - but they don’t! Humans in human heights look good, but making human proportions in doll form just makes them look ugly - hence why celebrity dolls look terrible. Barbie has come out with a line of fuller dolls I.e fashionistas and some Extras, and it’s a known fact that those curvy dolls do not sell as well as the regular Barbies.

To say that GI Joe escapes criticism is kind of ignorant, boy's toys ARE put under scrutiny all the time, it is not just girl's toys. Though in GI Joe's case the criticism is actually good, I suppose. While I agree that kids don't actually that much about doll aesthetics, generally I think giving Barbie a more realistic body -would- be good, overall.

Because Barbies body was designed to be able to have fabric on top so it wouldn’t look bulky - which has now caused the issue (since the body changes) that the clothing all the dolls come with are cheap, thin and/or printed on. I won’t say that Barbies decline is all because of the dolls new design, but it does all tie in. Doll design costs a lot of money, and the company is now churning out new face/body molds (which costs hundreds of thousands) each season to show forms of diversity, which is ultimately causing the doll line not to be able to make affordable and good quality dolls. Notice how Bratz, rainbow high etc have more opportunity to focus on quality since all their molds look the same for each character? As for boy toys receiving criticism - granted I will give you that, but that criticism usually comes from a view point that the toys are violent, got guns etc - hardly ever actually talking about the physical aesthetics of their body. We are watching a video that is dedicated to anti-Barbie doll lines.

I completely agree. I loved my Barbies and never felt inferior or body shamed because of her. She's a tool for play. Even the Lego Friends collections are getting criticized for the character's body proportions.

@@Adv18 To be fair, Monster High was high quality for years and they each had their own head molds as well, and there were plenty of alternative body molds (from taller and shorter dolls to multi-headed ones and ones with multiple arms). So I'm not sure if the differing face/body molds can really be linked to the poor quality of Barbie nowadays. Also, Rainbow High recently changed their face molds; series 3 all have differing molds.

@@Iroh12345 hey, I went and looked up monster high and rainbow high, and whilst I agree that there are some differences in the molds - each character having their own characteristics a lot of the molds were then abiding by that character throughout that doll line. I’d say in total maybe 13 different molds? Rainbow high looks like it alternates between a closed mouth mold and a smile mold which would be two? I can’t say that those lines have as much diversity as what the Barbie line has, at all. Actually, you have now put me down a Monster high rabbit hole and now I’m buying a bunch lolol Xx

If anything Barbie is a positive role model for young girls. Say what you will about her looks, but she's an independant woman who has been shown as part of tons of careers, many of which aren't typically considered "for girls". She shows young girls that they can do all those things too.

That’s what gets to me. Like oh Barbie is a problem but nothing is still being done to make beauty pageants more accessible to women of all body types and to make them not look like an excuse to see sexy women in skimpy bathing suits. Than there’s kid pageants that is a can of worms that’ll take too long to talk about and all I’ll say is that the fact those are still happening today despite the multiple controversies is disgusting. Also Toddler & Tiaras is just exploiting children and awful in every way. So thrilled it’s long since ended. And like when I was growing up there was all those misleading ads in magazines along with all the manipulative things from it, shows and movies that created all kinds of crazy and bad weight loss stuff. Glad that this has mostly stopped thanks to regulations but the damage is still there unfortunately.

My daughter loves the LoL Surprise doll line. Her dad and I hate them because of how they're dressed. However, she is not getting those messages. She playes family rolls with them. Children don't see the "errors" in dolls that adults see.

I personally love the OTT styles and high quality you get with LOL dolls. Kids usually end up taking the clothes off altogether anyway, so who really cares if it looks "risque" (by kids toy standards) The only thing I'm not a big fan of is their faces, but even that's something I'm getting past

Lammily came out befor the Curvy , Petite and Tall Barbies. I guess those new Bodytypes are an answer for Lammily. And the Nils in Lammilys coffin. That's exactly what she does do. The only reason she gets flack about her customs and other customizers don't is because she does more realistic, childish faces on Bratz dolls, instead of a fantasy mermaid or something. It only ever became an "anti Barbie" doll because other people made it that.

for me, dolls are over the top, they scream fashion, glamour, style! all other toys get to be crazy and over the top, so i don’t understand the need to make dolls realistic and turn them political. and i don’t mean that i mind variety of body types- i ADORE the hourglass figure of the omgs and the pear shape of the rainbow highs. just let dolls be stylish, glamorous and over the top. we have enough bland people in our day to day lives.

Lamily is especially ick, the creator said he made the doll cus Barbie wasn't attractive to him as a man. So he's one of those annoying "you'd look prettier with no makeup" type of guys Can I add that I find it sus how Bratz gets not only more hate, but more vitriol hate compared to Barbie and Bratz from the start was a pretty diverse group and featured multiple dolls of color. I actually liked the tree change dolls, they were my introduction to doll customising. I'm a girl who just can't wear makeup due to my autism making it make me want to rip my skin off. (I'm extremely sensitive to touch in general) so I would have liked a doll without makeup, I'm also pale as a ghost with freakles and grey eye so not many dolls are like me even barbie who is white is multiple shades darker than I am. Though I will say some of the attacks on barbie I heard growing up made me question whether it was okay to be the way I am, alway very tall (5'7 by 10) and slim, I understood anorexia is a thing but like a girl can't be tall and skinny and be healthy? I know it's stupid but these were the thoughts of a little girl who loved playing with dolls especially the movie barbies, mermaids, fairies, Swan Lake and the nutcracker dolls were my absolute favourite thing. My first barbie was a pink mermaid with a moving tail that I got when I was 4 and I loved her to literally dead (that doll lasted for years but the tail ripped) it's sad though that in their attempts to get at barbie that they effected the children with the features that they were attacking.

Are dolls not a tool of play and escape? Do they need to be real? Even as an adult collector I think most of us would agree they are just fashion or fantasy. And if not,then they should encourage imagination to turn them into other roles. Just curious Joey, those hearts dolls you showed.. could they be a rip off of the beautiful 'hearts to hearts' dolls? They look a little similar. And no, I personally don't support tree change dolls myself. I would if she used OLD dolls, or a variety of dolls, and her artwork varied, but taking a RARE bratz that most of us will never own and mutilating it...well if that's not 'negative' towards the doll community, nothing is. People tend to forget that barbie's predecessor was a German doll a friend of mine is German and she's six feet tall and at the time barbie was made the figure in style was more curvy and as far as barbie not promoting more intelectual vocations in 1970 when I was six she had already been an astronaut ,how many doctorets do you need for that.☺️🇨🇷

I actually designed some of the sewing patterns that Lammily sells on their website, and I really enjoyed designing clothes for the company. The Lammily doll reminded me a lot of a vintage doll I loved as a girl called Dusty (made by Kenner). She was an athletic fashion doll with a whole line of sports gear that you could buy for her. I especially loved playing with Dusty on my doll's trampoline and parallel bars. So working with the Lammily doll company to make some doll clothes patterns brought back happy memories of the Kenner brand Dusty dolls.

Also let’s not forget a reason why Barbie’s body isn’t a realistic standard is because fabric on a doll scale is really really thick in comparison and because they’re fashion dolls you want the fashion to look right on the doll

the one thing that bugs me about the As I Am doll is that it's a super skinny white girl with blonde hair and blue eyes lol I'm sure there's more skin tones to choose from, but the fact that it's all "inner beauty is what's important!" while being way skinnier than Barbie and focusing on exercise is pretty ironic to me

Back in the days I have seen Lammily promotion videos , first thing that I have notice was that the doll was kind too big and heavy for the hands of the kids . An other thing was , the kids looked as they was payed to say only positive things about her .

Remember when they tried canceling Barbie in 2014? I suppose every child is different, but Barbie has never impacted my childhood in a negative manner. I seen her simply as a doll/friend. My 2 year old loves her Barbie and if she wants to play with her, then I'm okay with that.

As a kid I never saw Barbies as real humans, more like cartoon characters. The only thing that bothered me at the time is the lack of different skin tones. But it is mostly adults that project things into kid's toys and entertainment and oftentimes remove the very things kids like. Also never been a fan of those "american girl" type of dolls. One for similar reason as mentioned: eyes are creepy (they look like spider eyes) and in general I find them super boring.

I’ve been collecting the Inspiring Women Barbies. I especially like the Katherine Johnson and Ella Fitzgerald dolls. Amelia Earhart is impossible to get for a decent price and is the only one I don’t have.

The title "The Normal Barbie Project" just really bothers me, like I know a lot of girls who look more like Barbie than Lamily ... so like are the Lamily creators trying to say that that's not normal? Like sure, Barbie's proportions aren't realistically achivable, but they also aren't meant to be taken literally ... like when I think of how Barbie would look like as areal person, I think of people like Margot Robbie, the BLACKPINK girls, Emma Watson, AleXa, Scarlett Johansson, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, all completely healthy women ...

All of these dolls are great tools of self-expression and creativity. Barbie edgers an especially bad rap, just because she’s been on toy shelves the longest. She has been affecting and affected by change, and she definitely doesn’t get enough credit.

It’s so gross when people criticize unrealistic standards in dolls and then make a replacement that’s still very much an overly idealistic representation of women. Dressing a doll in mom jeans and sensible shoes with no makeup is still an ideal even if it’s an incredibly boring one. It’s very hypocritical. The people who make these types of dolls don’t really want girls to be themselves they want them to fit their ideal of what they think women should be and the doll is just propaganda for that. I think in a lot of ways the Lammily style dolls are more toxic to kids than the fashion dolls they try to replace.

I've got 2 Lammily dolls (one unmodified and one I've started to modify). I do like them as an adult doll collector who collects playline dolls, because her bodyshape IS so different. Even within the 3 main Barbie bodyshapes, there's a lot of similarities - their arms and legs are about are the same size around, their torsos are close to the same height relative to their legs, their hands and feet are similar size. Lammily has a *long* torso and short legs compared to them and to most other low price non-playline doll bodies you can find. So I like her just for the variety.

I don’t care what anyone says, I LOVE the Tree Change dolls! They remind me of a simpler time that I wish I could go back to. I think so many people are blowing them out of proportion. The creator of the dolls started repainting them as a hobby. She only started selling them after she posted pictures of her artwork and people started asking her where they could buy them. She didn’t have any sort of an “agenda.” She’s just doing what she loves and forming a business around it.

I own the Lammilys! I kept the original (The Traveler) and the second one (The Photographer) - you should seriously check out the amazing camera she came with. The Animal Rescuer I gave away, and I think he was the brand's downfall. HUGE forehead. HUGE. All of us looked at him and collectively said, "Nah. We're good." I had to snap up a "Happy to be Me" doll as soon as I saw it. I can't hate Lammily, because I swear to this day that Lammily was the final push that made Mattel create the Fashionista line - and the Made To Move curvy bodies that I love so much.

Those Glitter Girls line is more of a comparison to AG willie wishers dolls and they are 14" tall. So, i don't think they meant to be compared with barbie. I actually own couple of them and i also don't like their staring eyes. I might consider selling them. 😄

this is an old video, but reading some of the top comments I just wanted to add my 2 cents in regards to the size of barbie. as a kid i did wish i looked more like barbie and sometimes i felt like i wasn't as pretty just because i was bigger than her, but the thing i think it's important to recognize is that that didn't happen in a vacuum. i had adults and tv and ads and even other kids telling me that i should want to be skinnier or that i would be prettier if i lost weight. so maybe to some extent barbie can exacerbate body image issues, but acting like buying a "better" doll would solve that problem is a little silly; i don't think not playing with barbies would have stopped me from being insecure or that by playing with more realistic dolls i would have been happy with my body type because i still would have gotten messages from other places that being fat was bad, it feels like a bandaid instead of stitches on the problem of fatphobia.
