This was the golden age of cartoons for 80's kids. Getting the toys based off our favorite show(s) allowed our imaginations to come up with our own episodes with them when a half hour of TV wasn't enough. I remember all of these. A time in life I'll never forget and wish everyone could have experienced.

That's actually why they passed regulations against these kind of shows, i.e. toy driven cartoons. Educational/moral groups thought it was wrong to market to kids this way and parent got tired of constantly getting nagged by their kids to buy them the hottest new toy.

One of the things I liked about Gummy Bears is that it had a story arc that progressed with each season, and it ultimately had a definitive ending. Most animated shows at the time were either completely episodic or got cancelled before they could finish their story.
@evanrhildreth
@evanrhildreth 10 ай бұрын
Many cartoons intentionally avoided story arcs because they were produced "for syndication" and had no control over when or what order the episodes would air. But the first 4 seasons of Gummy Bears was produced for NBC (this was before Disney acquired ABC) so they had the luxury of knowing how many episodes would air and knew they would air in order. If you re-watch the series, watch for any changes in the way the writers handled seasons 1-4 verses seasons 5-6.

I watched Thundercats as an adult, and I’m like gosh, how many times are they going to repeatedly fall into Mumm-Ra’s traps! Or how many times will he have them in his power only to fumble at the last minute! Now there was a time where things were very briefly changed up, Mumm-Ra’s bosses were fed up with him and sealed him away for a time. I am guessing that maybe the Thundercat production crew thought the show was going to end, but it went on for some time longer. After that, of course Mumm-Ra was brought back and the same old shenanigans ensued.

I was a MANIAC for the Littles!! It came on WFTS channel 10, Tampa, Florida’s ABC affiliate in the 11 AM/11:30 AM time slot, after the main Saturday morning lineup between ‘83 and ‘85. I loved the opening titles music. The show has a distinct anime influence, although it was made by a French production company and licensed by ABC.

What I remember from one episode, it involved I think a father and son who investigated this portal to another dimension with these creatures there, and I think the military was involved. Near the end the father was in a fight with the military leader, one of the creatures escaped, and a nuke exploded causing the dimension to implode.

I definitely remember all of these. But I grew up throughout all of the 80’s and 90’s watching a whole lot of cartoons, and I’m still into those decades’ nostalgia a lot. But these were the days. Just watching some of these after school, or getting up early Saturday mornings with a bowl of cereal and watching until mid-day. Animation overall, especially with certain shows, was so much better back then, the voice acting was better, and even the music. Especially on the epic show intros that they spent even more time on. Were we marketed to a lot with these to sell toys? Sure. But in most cases the toys were great too, so it was a win-win. Today I don’t know that I envy kids’ having access to anything at any time. First off, it seems much lower quality with mindless stories, just kicked out of a computer. But part of what made cartoons so great back in the day was that we didn’t have them ALL the time. So when we did, it was really special and exciting. The same goes with things like theme parks or other places you might have traveled to. You couldn’t just watch a million review videos or a POV ride-through on KZbin. You went, and you sometimes had no IDEA of the crazy fun you were about to experience. I can remember the first time I went to Walt Disney World in 1987, I could barely even find a few still photos from it in a book or magazine. But I definitely knew what it was from people’s stories and pop culture.

You are 100% right. Well said. I’d also add that while parents fought the toy companies to uncouple their toys with cartoons. I think that was the wrong thing to do. The cartoons build a world kids could use as a springboard to make their own adventures and fun with their toys. Or not at all, if they chose to ignore it. Nowadays kids see a cool toy and have no idea what its world would look or be like so they don’t really play with toys as much. Especially outside with their friends. Commercials used to frequently depict kids with their toys playing outside with friends. I almost never see kids outside playing with toys, let alone with a group of friends. Cartoons paired with toys was a good thing. Toys nowadays are mostly collectible toys that refer to days gone by that the younger generation has little to no interest in.

I remember most of these. To this day, I hear a little bit of their opening song and flood of memories still comes back. Like Denver the last Dinosaur, Snorks, and Heathcliff mostly from this list. Others I have some more distant memories of like Pound Puppies and The Littles. I personally liked the Snorks more than the Smurfs and while I remember watching the Gummy Bears, I really just remember it as that show that was on before DuckTales. It was fun to see the bears bouncing around, but I liked see what adventure Scrooge would be on next more.

You forgot to mention Galaxy High. That's a show that don't get no love. Created by Chris Columbus (the guy who invented Mrs. Doubtfire), and animated by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, the show is about two human kids who go to school in outer space. But it ain't no ordinary school. At that school, education and literacy are praised while sports are shunned while women get their moment in the spotlight. The show lasted 1 season in 1986, unsuccessfully competed with G.I. Joe and My Little Pony and was quietly pulled from the air after that one season. True fact: I'm one of only two or three people to know about that show

OH man, I remember that show as well! Kid-me loved it! One that still lives rent-free in my mind after all this time is Wildfyre (yes, the animation of the horses was absolutely atrocious, but the design style was high fantasy / horse girl). Kid-me loved what we now call the Isekai fantasy tropes, and along with Dungeons and Dragons were my favorite Saturday morning shows. Too bad the local networks had no clue that these cartoons actual had somewhat of an overarching story, thus they just showed the episodes in whatever order they felt like. Drove me up the wall at the time, because I could see it.

The only one I didn't watch was Denver. I loved all of the others. Another one that I loved was Monchichis. It came out in 1983, but only had 13 episodes. It was based on the stuffed toys. I also watched Shirt Tales that ran from 82-85. There were 23 episodes with 2 stories in each episode. Nancy Cartwright joined the voice cast in season 2.

I loved all these shows. I never watched the Snorks though. I liked the Smurfs. I adored the Gummy Bears due to its deep lore and great storytelling, I watched it non-stop on the Disney Afternoon. I also wished there was a show just for the Cadillac Cats. The episodes would have been less rushed if they were given a full half hour. Hector and Wordsworth were my favorite.

The only one I didn't know, at all, was the dinosaur one. I did watch the rest, mostly because of my younger siblings, except for The Littles, that was my favorite on this list & Jem...I watched that because of the girl I would eventually marry & we just celebrated our 29th anniversary. So, watching Jem paid off. 😂

I remember all of these. Some of them my sister was more of a fan of such as "Rainbow Brite", and "Jem." I recall sitting on my couch watching "Heathcliff." around 1985 while in kindergarten. I too enjoyed the "Catillac Cats" segment more than "Heathcliff" itself.

Heathcliff/The Cadillac Cats and Gummy Bears were among my favorite cartoons as a kid in the 80s. I saw a few episodes of Denver the Last Dinosaur and liked that one as well. I had never known that The Littles was made into a cartoon show, but I was a fan of the books. I never saw the Popples, Rainbow Brite or Pound Puppies shows, but I was familiar with the related merchandise. I wasn't aware of the other three shows until many years later.

I watched, and loved, almost all of these. Some weren't available when I was a kid, sadly. I recently revisited the Gummi Bears and I was taken aback at how inconcistent the animation and narrative was, especially in later seasons, which is a shame as it hade absolutely massive potential.
