This was the golden age of cartoons for 80's kids. Getting the toys based off our favorite show(s) allowed our imaginations to come up with our own episodes with them when a half hour of TV wasn't enough. I remember all of these. That's actually why they passed regulations against these kind of shows, i.e. toy driven cartoons. Educational/moral groups thought it was wrong to market to kids this way and parent got tired of constantly getting nagged by their kids to buy them the hottest new toy.

One of the things I liked about Gummy Bears is that it had a story arc that progressed with each season, and it ultimately had a definitive ending. Most animated shows at the time were either completely episodic or got cancelled before they could finish their story.
@evanrhildreth Жыл бұрын
Many cartoons intentionally avoided story arcs because they were produced "for syndication" and had no control over when or what order the episodes would air. But the first 4 seasons of Gummy Bears was produced for NBC (this was before Disney acquired ABC) so they had the luxury of knowing how many episodes would air and knew they would air in order. If you re-watch the series, watch for any changes in the way the writers handled seasons 1-4 verses seasons 5-6.

I watched Thundercats as an adult, and I’m like gosh, how many times are they going to repeatedly fall into Mumm-Ra’s traps! Or how many times will he have them in his power only to fumble at the last minute! Now there was a time where things were very briefly changed up, Mumm-Ra’s bosses were fed up with him and sealed him away for a time. I am guessing that maybe the Thundercat production crew thought the show was going to end, but it went on for some time longer. After that, of course Mumm-Ra was brought back and the same old shenanigans ensued.

I definitely remember all of these. But I grew up throughout all of the 80’s and 90’s watching a whole lot of cartoons, and I’m still into those decades’ nostalgia a lot. But these were the days. Just watching some of these after school, or getting up early Saturday mornings with a bowl of cereal and watching until mid-day. Animation overall, especially with certain shows, was so much better back then, the voice acting was better, and even the music. Especially on the epic show intros that they spent even more time on. Were we marketed to a lot with these to sell toys? Sure. But in most cases the toys were great too, so it was a win-win. Today I don’t know that I envy kids’ having access to anything at any time. First off, it seems much lower quality with mindless stories, just kicked out of a computer. But part of what made cartoons so great back in the day was that we didn’t have them ALL the time. So when we did, it was really special and exciting. The same goes with things like theme parks or other places you might have traveled to. You couldn’t just watch a million review videos or a POV ride-through on KZbin. You went, and you sometimes had no IDEA of the crazy fun you were about to experience. I can remember the first time I went to Walt Disney World in 1987, I could barely even find a few still photos from it in a book or magazine. But I definitely knew what it was from people’s stories and pop culture.

@nicholasbullock1709 Жыл бұрын
You are 100% right. Well said. I’d also add that while parents fought the toy companies to uncouple their toys with cartoons. I think that was the wrong thing to do. The cartoons build a world kids could use as a springboard to make their own adventures and fun with their toys. Or not at all, if they chose to ignore it. Nowadays kids see a cool toy and have no idea what its world would look or be like so they don’t really play with toys as much. Especially outside with their friends. Commercials used to frequently depict kids with their toys playing outside with friends. I almost never see kids outside playing with toys, let alone with a group of friends. Cartoons paired with toys was a good thing. Toys nowadays are mostly collectible toys that refer to days gone by that the younger generation has little to no interest in.

OMG I hadn't thought about Heathcliff in years! I watched the original run as a kid back in the 80's. It was so much fun!

I grew up watching most of the cartoons on this list(Heathcliff, The Littles, Jem, Gummy Bears, Pound Puppies, Snorks, and Denver) and it shows how much influence they were in our lives. And if it wasn’t for the USA Cartoon Express, we would’ve never known some of the shows

I remember crying as a kid when the Gummy Bears used that huge telegraph machine and discovered there was at least one last colony of bears across the sea.

Yep, I remember all of these. Jem and The Gummi Bears were my faves, and their theme songs evoke such powerful nostalgia. Loved hearing the Denver theme again - my friends and I thought that cartoon was so cool! Also, I love reading the comments of all you fellow 80s kids. You really had to be there... and we were.

There are some 80s CARTOONS that I never seen before. But I still watched a ton of them every SATURDAY MORNING! And the only way to WATCH them was with an ANALOG CRT BOX TV. Usually with a REMOTE and ANTENNA. No WI FI or ONLINE STREAMS required back then. Some TV'S even had STEREOS built in. Our FAMILY had a CURTIS MATHIS STEREO CONSOLE. (1985-1995) So watching TV and listening to MUSIC was AWESOME IMO. I may be one of few people that still watch AIR TV. And I have an LED 4K SMART TV.

I watched every one of these when I was a kid. I had a Pound Puppy and a Pound Kitty stuffed animal. I'm pretty sure I had at least one Popple. I had the whole set of Rainbow Bright dolls, and for one Halloween, my mom and I had matching Rainbow Bright costumes that she made. I think she even had the cake pan. Man, I really miss those shows.

I watched ALL of these… I loved The Littles so much… I couldn’t wait to catch that show on tv. The opening theme and animation was amazing. And Jem and the Holograms was EVERYTHING to me… that the Wuzzles was a get call back. I forgot all about that one and just like that all my memories were returned.

I remember all of these. You could do an entire series of forgotten 80's cartoons because there were so many. Dinosaucers comes to mind.

I'll NEVER forget Heathcliff. I read the comics as a kid and always around Christmas, there was a Heathcliff marathon. As an adult, I found all the episodes on DVD and bought them so my son could enjoy them. He's almost an adult and we still have those DVDs. 🙂

I watched all of these! The Pound Puppies bring back special memories because as a child I wanted the plushie but my parents couldn't afford it, so my grandma made one for me on her sewing machine. I loved it!

I remember, FONDLY, every one on your list. You totally nailed it with the Gummi Bears. I, too, still remember the theme song. Heck, I started singing it as soon as I heard the first note😁
