Why not talk about abilities that were buffed (like Sturdy) or nerfed (like Gale wings)? Why not talk about the fact that all -ate and -ize abilities change normal-type moves to the relevant type, except for Normalize that affects moves of all types (which allowed Wolfe Glick to pull off the greatest troll/torture battle seen in professional competitive Pokemon)? The list is long, but yet Hyper cutter is traditionally included in most sub-lists out of respect.

That is so weird to say and so subjective. The creator doesn't need to mention hyper cutter or flame body because Arceus would smite him otherwise. I believe you are missing the point of the video. I think it's more about the feeling of "huh, that's cool. I didn't know that". If you think the effects of flame body or HC are so obscure they had to be mentioned, you haven't been on KZbin or played pokemon for long enough. Which obviously isn't the case. You get what I'm saying? When a KZbinr makes a video it's not about gaining the masses' approval, it's about entertaining them. And please don't take this personal. I think the best way to make slaking usable/strong but not overpowered is by giving it normalize. That way it hits super hard but it's completely walked by ghosts, steels and rock head types.

The No Special Ability entry could also just be a placeholder/testing ability used for Pokemon they added in but haven't picked/created an Ability for. I assume the Sand Attack hitting is because you are throwing sand therefore you can hit flying targets like how we have Thousand arrows that can hit Flying types despite being a ground move since it flies up to hit the target. Stench being the first Ability seems to imply that originally abilities might have been planned to only be out of battle affects. Considering how Hyper Cutter increases the amount of Grass you can Cut it's possible that some Pokemon abilities may have been planned to substitute for HMs early in development.

I imagine stench may have been the first ability implemented in gen 3 as it was the easiest to program. They already had repels and the cleanse tag effects, meaning it may have been quite straightforward to make into an ability

All the Rotom forms should have an ability like the "-ate" abilities. Refrigerate for frost, Aerilate for fan, and new ones for the rest. Can't really think of any names tho... Also Rotom mow, and some other pokémon, should get a steel attack that's super effective against grass types. I want more attacks like Freeze dry.

5:14 I completely disagree. It's exactly _because_ they are Steel Types that they didn't receive Steel Worker. (And I doubt that any Steel Type ever will.) Giving what comes down to a Double STAB is already asking for trouble, especially on a Pokémon like Copperaja with it's massive 130 Base Attack... Despite this hiccup, it's a solid video overall.

@@SonBlackHeart22 Dhelmise never was OP though. It merely has Steel STAB albeit being a Grass/Ghost Type. And scratch that no Steel Type ever will get Steel Worker. When looking up Dhelmise's english name (as far as I am concerned it's called "Moruda") on pokewiki I found out that the new Regis have Dragon's Maw/Transistor - which are the same as Steel Worker for Dragon/Electric albeit they already have this type... They do get "Double STAB"... So Registeel might get Steel Worker later on. (That they did that with Legendaries kinda proves my point that it's too powerful though.)

You realise that pokemon designing has very little to do with viability? No one cares whether something is strong or weak if it makes sense design wise. The only exceptions are gimmicks such as wonder guard that requires 1HP

So it cannot do that albeit making perfect sense invalidating your argument completely.

I've been complaining about Palkia, Dialga and Giratina's ability because they are in charge of 3 different things. Palkia is in charge of space so I suggest that it's ability make it so any and all hazards and terrain moves on the field dissappear. For Dialga, it's ability would make it so all timed moves and weather effects (except for when it's in locations where weather happens automatically) lose their effect in 1/2 or so if the turns (3 for 5-6 turns, 2 for 3-4 turns). Giratina is an interesting one because I haven't been able to figure out a unique ability for it.

1) I think Delibird getting Insomnia was mainly a reference to how kids can’t sleep due to excitement at Christmas. 2) More likely, “no special ability” was a beta placeholder. 3) It’s Entrainment, not “entertainment”. As in, “to be trained” not “to be entertained”.

I think it's interesting that durant has truant as its hidden ability since hidden abilities are generally meant to be better than the usual ones but this one sucks. Also ants are generally seen as hard-working insects but truant would mean it is lazy.

4:55 Friendly reminder that just because something seems to make sense in English, means it makes sense completely. For example, yes, Refrigerate and Rotom taking the shape of a fridge, but in Japanese the ability's name is Freeze Skin. Sometimes localization doesn't translate things exactly as they were originally.

I think abilities like Levitate should be reconsidered as a separate mechanic. For a lot of Pokémon, like Flygon, it's just their natural ability to fly, not some special power. And yet there are so many Pokémon that can fly or float by nature, but don't have Levitate or the Flying type. Since the reason some Pokémon have certain abilities comes down to their biology, maybe Gamefreak should take their original idea of only some Pokémon having abilities, and rework it into a new mechanic that factors in a species-wide characteristic.

When you brought an invincible Shedinja, I thought you were going to mention putting sturdy on it. Sturdy can prevent any knock-outs from direct attacks as long as the pokemon is full health. If a full health sturdy pokemon gets hit by any move that will kill it, it will hang on 1HP and continue battling. Shedinja only has 1HP, therefore a sturdy Shedinja will never be KO by any direct attack (unless the opponent can ignore abilities), even without a held item. To make things even worse, you can give Shedinja the item Safety goggles, which will prevent it take damage from weather. Make your ally in double battle use Glare or Thunder wave to paralyze Shedinja, this will prevent Shedinja from getting burned or poisoned, and you will get an invincible Shedinja. Pretty sure someone tested it before, a sturdy Shedinja cannot be knocked out by multiple hit moves or confusion damage, both of them will just trigger the sturdy ability for each hit.

wow I have seen all forms of invincible shedinja except the strategy to paralyze it to prevent status with safety goggles. thankfully still rock helmet, spiky shield skill swap, neutralizing gas etc are there.

@@anuragkat66 Anyone running this set won't use physical attacts, so I'm sure Spiky shield and Rocky helmet makes no difference. Basically just change the ability or use mold breaker will be the best way to deal with it. Or just use whirlwind or Roar to blow it away, it will be back to wonder guard the next time you see it, but you can easily prevent this if you don't have any other pokemon to swap with. The last time I saw someone using this used a sturdy carbink that just blew up with explosion so it can't be swapped out again.

I’m guessing Cacaphony was a last minute cut due to the fact I found out about it because it’s listed as an ability in my guidebook. Also fun fact, for some reason in gen 4 (hgss) I put wonderguard on my Spiritomb for fun for the battle tower and fire fang was the only move that ignored the ability. Unless There was an ability involved and I’m mistaken but it’s been years and I’m pretty sure there wasn’t lol. If someone wants to test this again that’d be great.

I think the 'no special ability' was more a thing like IV, Shiny etc... Something that you have to chase... Like catch 2 zigzagoon and one will have an ability while the other not... Giving abilities to only specific Pokemon wouldn't be really a good Idea to begin with. But giving all Pokemon the opportunity to get an ability and being worth catching/hunting would fit better to the pokemon franchise. But it's just my opinion... Who knows...

Meeting at game freak about abilities. Okay guys we are gonna come up with some abilities for Pokemon. (Guy 1 stands up) I got one. An ability to intimate the opponents Pokemon to decrease a stat. (Guy 2 stands up) alright I don't know how I will top that but how about an ability that can trace over other Pokemons abilities. (Guy 3 stands up) You know after a while pokemon can stink if you don't bathe them so why not an ability that makes wild Pokemon more than likely not to keep fighting because it stinks... (Everyone in the meeting staring awkwardly at guy 3 only to burst in laughter) that's freaking genius we will make this first on the index!

No... That's not how abilities work. First off, if you're going to say Pokemon should/n't get abilities based on their names, you can't go off the English names. Your puns may/not work in the original Japanese. Secondly, Pokemon are much more limited to how many abilities they can have (3), than moves (however many moves are in that given game). Not to mention plenty of these Pokemon/ability combinations would be nightmares: Battle Armor Rhyperior would be pretty inpenetrable and Smeargle... doesn't do what Trace does. Fourthly, Ledyba is pretty well characterized as a scaredy-cat, so it having Rattled makes sense. Not to mention there's no reason for Bugs not to be afraid of Ghost or Dark... or other Bugs.... Fifth, Armaldo and Anorith are aquatic creatures. Of course they have Swift Swim. Sixth, the flying-type doesn't grant immunity to Sand Attack, so that's probably why Sand Attack hits Pokemon with Levitate. Lastly, Zangoose doesn't have a "toxic barrier." Their abilities don't parallel each other :/
