I get asked a lot what's my favorite riff, and so I decided to make a video showing some of them! There are soooo many cool ones that it's nearly impossible to decide just one - so lists of 10 and 10 is perfect!!
This list is in random order!
I really loved making this video, so I'll gladly make a part 2 if that's cool; so just let me know!
Also, what is your opinion on "riffs"? Can a one-noted riff with a certain rhythm be called a "riff" or is that somehting else?

I believe the word you're looking for is 'Dissonance'. In music, it's when you have two notes that normally would sound bad together (for example playing D and C# together) but in the right context can sound beautiful. :)

Games'n' Guitar Well, I've met a lot of people who know those but not Megadeth. I know other people who know Megadeth but haven't ever listened to them. So it's likely that she knows them, but she probably hasn't listened to them (at least not enough). EDIT: In fact, years ago, I didn't know Megadeth either but was familiar with the rest of the bands you mentioned. I'm glad I "discovered" them though haha.

A riff is simply another term for an ostinato (a repeating musically pattern). Anything that sort of repeats more than once qualifies. Essentially if you have an entire section of galloping (a series of triples on guitars) or as just playing the same note on the first beat of each bar it is still a riff. So to sum up the answer to your question: playing the same note at different rhythms is a riff.

Your enthusiasm about your favorite riffs reminds me of why I started playing guitar almost 30 years ago! Great job, keep up the good work. Really excellent sense of rhythm, which seems to be rare amongst guitar players these days. Have you ever thought about putting a microphone on your guitar amp, and doing some editing between your vocal mic and the guitar mic? Cut the vocal mic when you're playing guitar, and vice versa. My theory is that if we can hear the pick hitting the strings, the amp isn't loud enough :)

The notes in riff 7 is basically a tritone. It's atonal and sounds "evil" (or heavy, cool, chaotic, etc.). It fits, but it adds tension.

I've been playing 35 years and I was impressed enough to say this girl kicks ass! I was even more impressed by her wonderful attitude and obvious genuine love for the riffs and playing guitar in general. Absolutely wonderful personality such as this is refreshing to see in a guitarist, and shes very cute to boot! I'm confident a large sum of viewers will gain a great deal of motivation from her inspirational personality and attitude and gain better technique, and overall skill by watching her rip it up properly!

The breakdown outro from Gojira's song "Remembrance" is basically (almost) just 1 note and that is the riffiest riff I've ever heard, so yeah, a one-noted riff is still a riff, in my opinion.

Those are some cool riffs. To answer your question, yes I do think that a single note played with a certain rhythm can be considered a riff. For example the band Helmet has done lots of really awesome riffs with one note with a certain rhythmic feel to it.

That "one note dropped" is a diminished fifth, also known as a tritone, and it makes the chord dissonant. Playing in D instead of E doesn't change the intonation, it changes the key. You really should know this. Props for the downpicking!

Yes. One single note can be a riff. The different rhythms make it a riff, but it's possible to have a riff that's just like one note in a simple beat.

07:00 it's called dissonant notes. Notes that fall within the same scale but doesn't usually make "pretty" sounding chords :)

the riff in 7:03 is called augmenting. (Og menting). Its to say to drop a note a half step in a chord.

That off note you speak of on Judas Kiss is a diminished 5th or a tritone. The tritrone is used in a lot in Metal Music.
