Thanks for the shout out! Empire of Passions may be a bit much for some viewers, but compared to Nagisa Oishima's previous work, In the Realm of the Senses, it's actually toned down a lot.

It's the hannya mask used in noh theater to portray a demon woman. What's cool is depending on how you angle the mask, the expression changes.

I'm going to watch yokai 100 soon since you recommended it a few times. Have you seen the blade of the immortal anime? I enjoyed it a lot more than the movie myself. Also did you know the main actor from Kuroneko is a kabuki actor who later played the same role in the ibaraki play.

Thanks for your list. Blade of the immortal manga is entertaining yet has so many characters it is complicated. The anime series of blade of the immortal is a great way to watch the entire story.

Said it before and I'll say it again, check out SAMURAI REINCARNATION (Makai Tenshiio) from 1981. Sonny Chiba reprises his role as Jubei Yagyu and has to take on several famous warriors, including Miyamoto Musashi, who been brought back to life as demons to overthrow the Shogunate. This was the film that inspired the anime NIINJA SCROLL and Chiba even recited lines from it in KILL BILL VOL. 1. As an added bonus it co-stars the LONE WOLF himself Tomisaburo Wakayama as Jubei's father and it was directed by the great Kinji Fukasaku. It can currently be watched for free with subtitles on the Tubi streaming service.

I think the movie Demons (1971) deserves a place on this list. other lesser quality films that count in this genre that I think are worth watching: Samurai Reincarnation, The Legend of the 8 Samurai, Blind Woman's Curse, Dororo and Gojoe.

A silent jidaigeki, Jiraiya the hero (1921) was very important in the history of Japanese special effect film. There is a deep relationship between jidaieki and tokusatsu.

@@bushidoblues9302 The director of this film, Shozo Makino died in 1929. His films are public domain. But a lot of his films were lost. Some parts of Jiraiya the hero weren't exciting. Such things happened in prewar Japan.

Eh, I actually kinda liked _47 Ronin._ Its by no means fantastic, but I was fairly entertained by it: It had great Production Values in terms of Design, Effects, Sets and Costumes, a couple of well made Action Scenes, a solid musical Score and rather Solid Acting (especially from Hiroyuki Sanada). The Editing, especially in the films middle section was a bit jumpy (and it is here, I think, where the movies' troubled production - including lots of reedits and reshoots - was most noticable). But still, I think its good. The one thing I don't like about _Blade of the Immortal_ is also that I think this should have been a Trilogy... but one covering the exact same story which was just crammed into only this one film. Having read the manga, this adaptation just felt a bit rushed to me, and there were several characters which were introduced but didn't reappear afterwards: Magatsu, Giichi, Hyakurin. They were all important characters in the manga but in the film they were just kind of "dropped" after a while.
