I love basic bed socks. It's essentially a rectangular flat knit and some decreasing on the last two rows. You can knit them in a couple of hours with bulky wool. A great beginner project.
@NerdyKnitting4 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea! I've never made them - do you have a pattern you could recommend?
@wendynoble65454 жыл бұрын
Mmm... I do it from memory. With a worsted yarn, I recently did one with 22 stitches. I knitted it 22cm (my foot is 29cm - sorry, I'm no good with inches but the basic idea is that the knitting will stretch and you knit it shorter than your foot). Second last row you knit 2 together to reduce by half. Last row you cast off. From the scrunched up front you seem the rectangle lengthways about half the length of the rectangle. Then you seem the back of the heel. And voila!

Thank you! You described it perfectly - I could envision each step in the process. That would definitely be an easy 'no pattern needed' project.

Definitly Garter stich is the one to begin with. I started with that about 20 years ago, making 20 8x8" squares, then sewing them to make a baby blanket. Then some scarfs and mittens made by rectangles, and the adding some simple pattern (purls and knits) to the squares a so on.... Eventually knitted most of the winter baby clothes to my son, so 100% recommend your video and tips, just start simple, you can still make some wonderful stuff =)

Thanks for this list! I'm moving to a new country in 2 weeks and have to quarantine for 10 days and decided that I'll learn to knit during that time. I've been having the hardest time finding videos for new knitters though so this list is perfect! And I love that it's all knit flat as I bought straight needles but all the videos I'm finding online are using circular needles. Subscribed to your channel and can't wait to go through all your videos!

My first knitting project was a bulky yarn tube sock that was knit flat in only like 14 rows and then seemed together. It knit up super fast and I learned a lot of the basics that way.

I LOVED a number of these projects! My HACKS for SCARFS are : 1) LENGTH = the person's Height (approximately) - 2)WIDTH = Length of Hand (heal to finger tip, adult 6" or more) - 3) WIND-PROOF IT - go 1 size needle down for a tighter knit! **Smile**
@NerdyKnitting3 жыл бұрын
Great tips! I'd heard the length recommendation before but not the others. Thank you!

I'm a crocheter, and I've always been put off by knitting cuz it seems too hard. You made everything sound so simple! I think my biggest mistake was trying to knit socks for my very first project, bad idea.
@NerdyKnitting3 жыл бұрын
Goodness - socks as a first project is brave! 👏

Ironically, it was the opposite for me. I got a knit and crochet kit when I was a kid. I got the gist of knitting quickly from the instructions but I struggled with crochet. The crochet projects looked so much more complex to me
@NerdyKnitting3 жыл бұрын
Really? That's so interesting, Cymba. I thought crochet was easier because it was just one tool - two needles seemed so daunting before I started knitting!

Irena Revo Utube channel has easy to follow technical demos. My favorite is the Symmetrical triangle shawl. It is garter stitch. I love that it comes out diagonal, so looks very interesting if you use a self striping yarn for example because the stripes are diagonal a doss your back, but no special stitch is used. The weight of yarn, and any amount of yarn. You can make a small triangle scarf or a large shawl as long as you like. She also has another video about several different ways to do increases in case you don’t like the one that she used in this pattern. And I believe she also has a crocheted version which is also interesting.

Any suggestions on the size of needle a beginner should use? What’s the smallest size I can start with comfortably?
@NerdyKnitting4 жыл бұрын
I would recommend a US 9 or 10 (5.5 mm and 6 mm) and bulky yarn (look for yarn labeled 'bulky' or a symbol that looks like a little ball of yarn with the number 5 somewhere on the yarn label). That will make it easy to see what you're doing.
