Lisa Doby me too !! For me it’s helping me get in touch with my heritage. I’m australian but around 90% of my ancestry is Irish with links mainly to Tipperary , then my great grandmothers family the O’Brien’s are from Cavan and on dads side one of my great grandmothers ( dads maternal gran ) she was from Cork ) I’ve since learnt all the county names in Irish for myself !! In gaeilge ( Irish ) place name etymology ( science of naming ) is usually of significance it helps if you learn descriptive words such as clon ( meadow ) kill ( church ) etc often they are a combination of words from French or Latin or other languages here’s an example clonmel take note of the above the Mel part is related to the French word miel meaning honey combine it with clon above and you have the Irish for a honey meadow . Beautiful huh that place is in county Tipperary which in Irish is tiobraid arrain which means the well of arra when you translate it . I have a Pinterest board dedicated to the Irish language should you wish to check it out any time profile is under same name as here .

Very interesting Michelle, and yes Irish place names very often originate from the Irish language, take Dublin - comes from Dubh(Black) and Linn(pool) meaning Blackpool. I hope to do a video on place-names very soon 😁

I'm an irish-american whose people come from Coleraine way up in the north, I love everything you're doing, and I've watched every one of your videos, but as someone who spent the last number of years studying the Gaelic language I am tempted to poke fun a little bit, because to me you sound like a Gaelic speaking cyborg, I understand it's for the purposes of instruction , but still , you should do a video where you go over robot type phrases like: "Beidh me ar ais." "Is tusa Sarah Conner?" I'm not sure how you'd say hasta la vista baby in Irish "slainte a ghrá" maybe. Buichas! Again I love everything you do, I had my son watch your videos, I'm just as you would say over there 'taking a piss', slan

Thank you for your support and suggestion, I enjoy making the videos and I'm glad that you take some joy from them. I was never in Coleraine but the name cones from two Irish words - Cúil meaning back or corner and Raithin meaning ferns - the corner of Ferns. Great name.
