You are doing progress to fix the transom. You don't have to tight the thick measurements because you are going to add the fiberglass mats and woven also depend on which resin you are going to use because some of resin you will have to work fast just be aware of it. Keep up guys work.👍🏻

Hey man, owner of a 1993 Grady. I highly recommend that you pressure test your fuel tank for when you deal with the soft areas of the boat. My aluminum original fuel tank was entirely corroded on the top where the fuel line was sitting on it. Better to find out when dealing with the deck than when everything is buttoned up and nice.
@shotslife
@shotslife 3 жыл бұрын
I suspect I will have that issue, although I believe the tanks to be full so I may get lucky... where did you get your new tank from?
@cameronsmith4527
@cameronsmith4527 3 жыл бұрын
Shots Life it had to be fabricated by a local shop, I have a spirit 175 and I don’t think they made many of them so there’s not a market for stuff like the fuel tank. Depending on your situation though there are other options. atlinc.com makes fuel bladders that can be custom made to fit inside your existing tank if it has leaks. They have good reviews on the hull truth that you can read if that seems like it would be a better option down the road.

Dry fitting looks good different but good, are you using marine ply, rear timbers sealed in or glassing them together before final fit. I only say as water could still find its way in Although marine ply is resistant to rot and warping you only want to do this task once and hopefully make it stronger than new. But hey your boat bud mine is just an opinion. Sorry just noticed under title you are using marine ply.

Piece of aluminum is a bad idea. If any moisture gets to it it’s going oxidize and swell up delaminating the boards. Better off glassing in a piece of wood in that whole area then boarding on top of that.

Shots Life; I really hope you see this message before you proceed further. I am literally at the fairing stage of this exact project, tackled in the exact same way. Some points that you need to account for now, before the glass work begins. I laugh because it's deja vu. I would highly recommend you sand the inner skin with the damage. Put a cardboard backer with cookie sheet on the inside of the damage/ripped skin so it's flat. Resin won't stick to the cookie sheet. Tear, not cut, a piece of 1.5oz CSM and cover the hole so the torn edges feather onto the skin. It's not for strength, just to have a flat skin for the structural glass layers. Put a layer of 1808 first that is the exact shape of the skin to the edge and then 1708 second, which you overlap to the sides of the hull to bond as well as seal off transom from the inside for water seepage at the edges. Now, you will notice your wood core does not fit. Just telling you now to fix the inner skin and make it stronger than it is or it will break again. I had the same issue. Also, lets say you don't do the above. When you go to bond your core pieces together, you may find out those three pieces won't fit because you need to account for the bonding material thickness. Dry fit, they are wedged in. You're going to have four layers of core bonding material that will make that space tighter. (Skin*core*core*core*outer skin). If you put CSM in between each one, it really wont fit. I discovered this error when i was trying to fit in the second piece. My two 3/4 pieces, I had to sand a layer of ply off the second marine ply core sheet with a belt sander to fit because we are doing it from the outside. Also, do not forget about filling your side and bottom gaps with some type of bonding filler. I used Vinyl Ester, 1708 and 1808 for everything. Followed by Total Boat fairing compound. Just trying to help another out! Good luck and I keep watching for the updates.
@thedoughnut8500
@thedoughnut8500 3 жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention, your inner skin should not wobble. Which is why i recommended the two layers of 1808/1708. Remember, you are hanging twins off the back of this. Not a single 200.
@shotslife
@shotslife 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks brother... you will see in the next video I used peanut butter (silicon, resin and fiberglass) around the edges and to fill the void...and added fiberglass on top of the old skin to make the flat surface, same principle, different path... and yes it was TIGHT!! How are you planning to attach the transom to the boat's body? In other words, how will you make sure transom does not tear out?
@shotslife
@shotslife 3 жыл бұрын
Fiberglass it in, so resin, fiberglass, resin, wood, resin, fiberglass, resin, wood, resin, fiberglass, resin, wood, resin, fiberglass, resin, then the old fiberglass shell... then resin with silicone mixed in it to put in all around the sides of the wood.
@mehmetdtx
@mehmetdtx 3 жыл бұрын
Shots Life isn’t there a frame to attach to? if you do all that, eventually it will be tied to fiberglass. Would fiberglass be as strong as wood frame (if any)?
@shotslife
@shotslife 3 жыл бұрын
Well it will all go against the old fiberglass wall inside... there is no center frame to brace to for the very back, the transom on this boat is really separate from the rest of the boat there are no brackets in it... it’s just a thick fiberglass and wood shell, the sides being fiberglassed to the sides and the bottom fiberglassed to the bottom it what holds her together...
