This is a great list and a great idea for a video. I will keep an eye out for a few of those.

A good list there, admittedly I haven't read or heard of many of the books you mention, aside from Marquez, Old Man's War, and The Kite Runner and reading Of Mice and Men and Gone Girl (and they are masterworks, both). You're overloading my TBR guys, I don't know how much more I can take! Great video.

Great list. I'd also recommend any Jack Reacher book to non-readers. They are all short, easy and fun.

Absolutely with you on the Reacher books! They're a favourite comfort read. Cheers Diane!

I hadn't heard about most of these before watching this; a few of these sound really interesting though - specifically "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" and "I Who Have Never Known Men". I'm not new to reading; Fantasy is my bread and butter that I always come back to, but I also try to read more broadly - so, thanks for these recommendations!

As a professional fully certified non(aka lazy) reader I found that short story collections helped me a lot as a way of feeling a sense of achievement without the time commitment of a full novel. Either collections by the same author or anthologies with a mix of writers were great taster menus for authors who eventually I'd enjoy reading a novel by. Reading comics also helped massively to bridge my mind between that liminal space of passive visual storytelling of movies and tv into the active experience of reading a story. As Carlos well knows none of this helps me actually finish most books I've started then never finished but it's helped me a lot during the times when I managed to read more than I ever imagined I could.

Brilliant comment cheers Deano! I've been thinking of doing a video talking about just that very thing. Of trying short stories & comics and tips to stretching that muscle again. And also that middle ground between the visuals if you're into movies and script. You're spot on....now go read The Expanse, I know it's been on your shelf for 3 years 😜

I just ordered Boy Parts and am looking forward to it. Also, I'd recommend short stories as a way for people to get into reading if they haven't been. Amazon Originals are a good option, with several themed collections that you can check out, along with the audio book, to tandem read. Perfect if you just haven't had the focus to read and just want something you can finish in about an hour.

Ohh yesss great suggestion! Short stories are great for getting into reading for sure.. usually so much packed into 10-50 pages or so

Great list you two. Of these I've read "I Who Have Never Known Men" and "Mephisto" and agree with both these choices. I'll have to check out a couple of these others. -Cheers you two

A great selection of books. On 100 Years of Solitude, Márquez also praised the Gregory Rabassa translation as better than the Spanish original. A wild (and probably false) statement, but the fact that he could say it at all showcases how incredible the English translation is, what a book.

Love The Commitments, even though it took a bit of an adjustment to read some of the Dublin slang. Just wasn't used to seeing it written down. I prefer The Snapper and still haven't read The Van.

Yet again, Carlos speaks my mind. I would also not recommend that any book you read be Ulysses by James Joyce. 😆

Very interesting selection 😊 Didn’t know The Commitments was a book - loved the film and soundtrack. Tempted by Marquez and Ferrante (have been for ages) and definitely by Harpam (HOW do you find out about those books?!). Old Man’s War is fun, and I enjoyed the whole of the series even though the style does change quite a bit throughout. Btw could you recommend me a book that I could read in Spanish, to ease me in? Thanks 🤓

Browsing the book shop 😂 Hmmm, my default recommendation in Spanish is probably 'la sombra del viento' by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
