10 Botany Jobs: Environmental Conservation Botany Jobs and Environmental Internships to get them!

Botany jobs that allow you to impact the environment and conservation.
A bachelors degree in botany, ecology, environmental science, environmental studies, or other related natural resources fields is a great tool to get botany jobs. Working in plants can happen in so many ways, but in this video I'm talking about outdoors jobs in environmental conservation. Working outdoors in the field and getting to do botany is a real dream situation for most plant lovers. This video is going to go over not only the names of 10 job titles you might not know. These are jobs that support environmental conservation, restoration ecology, fire management, and so many other valuable fields. If you are looking for an environmental job or environmental career, these jobs also allow you to scale up over time and will generally start paying you around 20 dollars. Goes to show that being a botanist pays.
Internships are also very important part of the whole equation and will greatly increase the odds of you getting one of these jobs in the future. The resources below all offer many opportunities, some noncompetitive, that will allow you an easier time getting started in the field.

I’m starting school in January and am trying to figure out what exactly I should do. I’ve narrowed it down to something botany/ horticulture related but it’s hard to find what jobs are out there without the info being really broad. Again, thank you!

Are there any specific jobs where I could incoorperate my horticultural knowledge into reforestation/aforestation? I.e using techniques like companion planting and tree guilds to do this? It doesn't seem like anybody is doing this.

so I’m not on my channel much and not thinking of these things as often so sorry if this response doesn’t nail it haha. A suggestion I’d make is to look at your states department of ag or equivalent as well as NRCS. Those are places I’ve heard of doing similar kind of work to what I think you’re describing and are less popular agencies with a lot of cool stuff going on generally. unfortunately the thing that ultimately guides the techniques you’re going to use is the location you search for work and what that office or areas management has gotten funding for(think of strategies being what the area/office wants and tactics being the skills they utilize and both can be variable). Theres federally backed stuff which is predictable for funding and consistent on techniques and then more niche of projects. A place I used to work legitimately would do more planting stuff stacked on certain years combine resource costs and then spend years focused on monitoring those sites so it’s really just shopping around if you have a specific skill you want to use. Maybe a private contracted job that uses the skill? idk, but hope that’s useful somewhat haha.

If I decided to get a masters in NRM / ecology / forestry, would I still be able to qualify for a botany job?

It really depends on where you’re applying to but these are generally federal jobs(though you can find some through private sector and state) I would say the biggest determining factor would be just where you live, what the availability of the jobs are for applying. A lot of these require only a bachelors and are more career path oriented however having a masters will generally open up more jobs and all of those majors will definitely have opportunities to do botany and each field office generally has at least one dedicated botanist if you’re not interested in being focused on something else. If you haven’t gotten to work before yet in a botany role I would definitely suggest looking into state/fed summer jobs depending on where you live. Honestly, I was anxious and knew I wanted to work in plants and my first week of working in a field office I breathed a sigh of relief because honestly almost everyone gets to in natural resources/ ecology/ forestry. If you want some resources on that I’m sure they’re scattered throughout my videos but I can give you some key term searches to start looking at jobs/ qualifications/ and career path stuff just let me know. Know this is all over the place but I hope it helps!

I´m kinda scared bc i like plants but i dont like field jobs... i love taking vegetal histology, botany and pollen classes in college but i dont know if would ever get a job related with plants and labs at the same time. Also my grades are average so I don´t know if I can keep up with the high standards and competitions that are required for most of this jobs :( I feel so pessimistic about this...

Hey, glad that you’re interested in plants, and sorry that you’re feeling down about work prospects. I more recently made a video about plant research jobs which is a cool part of botany that is filled with probably even more potential jobs to fill than the conservation side. I have worked in a plant lab that did ag related work in the past and also didn’t have a stellar GPA coming out of college. If you go out and get your degree I think something that helped me not worry about my GPA (I’ve not once been asked about it ever) is doing small part time or summer jobs that put me in a place I could get experience. There’s federal organizations such as FS and ARS you might be able to look at, there is private places to look at or state plant, ag, food science and other types of stuff places to look at that would allow you to work at least at the tech level doing things that you might be better suited for. Obviously your university is going to have labs and professors for it (most likely) too. Definitely look at messaging somebody in a department or with a lab and see if you can even put some hours in volunteering if not find paid spots. Not sure if this seems too helpful but good luck either way!

@@shannagarroutte7829 Yeah, B.S. in Ecology and nothing else except for some certs I've gotten since graduating. I went to a small state college so I really didn't have access to anything other than the more general degrees. If you're looking at what degree for what job kinda thing, I don't think it matters too much between those at the bachelors level.

I'm in school now for an associates as a Environmental Science Technician but plan on specializing and getting my bachelors in either Geoscience, Plant and soil science or Botany. Unfortunately this video only made me question if i may want to do something like Forestry and only has me questioning more lol. Thanks for the informative video and hopefully i can narrow my choice down sooner than later. (I mainly want to work in the field versus a office or facility space.)
