I think their biggest mistake was sticking with the first season characters instead of going to a completely new cast of character in the second season as was the original plan. They had to nerf or sideline characters they made too powerful in the first season because they couldn't have them solving everything.

Sarah Conner was a victim of the writers strike (same as Prison Break and many other shows). That's why the first season was only 9 episodes, and why the second season had a two month hiatus (at xmas) as Fox shuffled their schedule while waiting for new episodes to be filmed. Frankly, there were multiple mistakes made with 1899 - episodic release would be a good, but there are other issues: bad timing (it was s a busy season plus the world cup was happening - and its hardly family programming). It also had some internal problems: personally I didn't really give a crap about the characters, except maybe one or two. It was too consistently dark in many ways. Haven't finished it yet, but I do plan to.
@greenskittles8627 Жыл бұрын
1899 also had terrible marketing. No advertising, and marketing as an English Language series when it wasn't. Paradise. It was an interesting premise for a western: gunfighter inherits his late sisters 4 kids & has to settle down as a rancher, set during the 1890s. It was more a Little House on the Prairie type western, & less a traditional shoot em up. There was great chemistry between the main cast, a plausible rationale for the romance between Ethan Cord & Amelia Lawson; & a lot of historical accuracy thru the first season. This' because it was created during a writers' strike, so the show's creator literally wrote all the episodes! It was retooled a bit for the second season. The biggest grievance I have with this season is Amelia's house visibly changing, creating a glaring continuity error. It had a strong 2-part opening episode suggesting that L. Frank Baum, creator of the Oz books (first of which was published around 1898, I think), based that novel on Ethan's niece Claire, & a family adventure. More strong episodes followed. What happened to the 3rd season was a crime of epic proportions! Apparently, network execs decided they wanted a traditional western...so all the wholesome family drama & character growth promptly went out the window...along with any internal logic! The season lasted for something like 5 episodes! It was a disjointed mess. The only thing good out of the 3rd season disaster is that we finally got John Taylor's backstory. He was a beloved, if somewhat enigmatic, supporting character.

Not exactly a cancellation, but Babylon 5's final season was destroyed because of a "cancellation" announcement. B5 had a "mapped" out 5 year story arc. However, it was cancelled off its original network before being saved after its third season. Season 4 was then really a season 4/5 rush job to get the whole story finished because there wasn't going to be a season 5. Then after filming the finale, the network came back and renewed the show for its fifth season. This meant that showrunner and main writer J. Micheal Straczynski had to create out of whole cloth a "sixth" season since the story arc was done. The finale was delayed going from the end of season 4 to the end of season 5, but season 5 was just limping the show through a final season. And probably led to the sequal show "Crusade" cancellation.

When I was younger there was a TV series called "FX: the series" based on the movie FX. Several issues that plagued the series was that at the time it aired on TV, special effects were still quite rough, especially for a TV series budget. Also, the whole premise of the series was a dynamic between a NY Detective working with a movie special FX expert to solve crimes. Yet in the first episode of season two the detective was killed off and replaced by another detective character. Since there were only two seasons I own both on DVD and I have noticed that most of the episodes in season two aren't as well written as season one. The worse part is that the last episode of the second season had a depressing storyline and clearly was setting up for a third season that never came.

American Idol actually killed the Terminator series. The way Fox scheduled American Idol like it was the only program that mattered in its 15 year run was what killed a lot of very promising shows. At numerous points during a season run, Fox scheduled Idol in such a way that it would consume multiple time slots, and existing shows, especially new shows, would get preempted for many weeks or get shuffled to other time slots. It’s well understood in television, except apparently at Fox, that if you don’t give a show a consistent time slot, ratings go down. When ratings of these shows invariably went down instead of recognizing the problem, Fox would cancel them or send them to Friday night to die.

Showrunners forget that there are fans from fandom and fanbase. They are more opted for more fanbase where they watch and then don’t talk. The creators only care about ratings. So they refuse to acknowledge fandoms who usually discuss and build communities which in return will bring viewers. They ignore the discussions, theories, and refuse to adapt with the fandom culture. Not all of them are like this, but most of them are, unfortunately. I can think a few of showrunners who refuse to understand what the audience want and put quality over quantity in storytelling

Funny thing is that Westworld the show followed a similar track as Westworld the movie series in terms of story quality. At least from the 10k foot view.

West World was so awful after the first season. You don't change the story simply because someone online guessed the ending. 🤦♀️

The Serenity movie failed at the box office... once again... due to studio bungling. They did a pre-release screening for fans... which had so much interest that they did more pre-release screenings, effectively showing the movie to everyone who was interested before the actual release. Then, the actual release already had all the wind taken out of its sails.

I remember Sarah Connor Chronicles was announced by Fox for a Season 3 continuation the January after Season 2 ended (and then "canceled" again a few months later), so lower ratings weren't the main issue. Part of the issue was the showrunners not following the "no more time travel" mandate from the network and studio. But the main issue was that Terminator: Salvation was slated to come out a month after Season 2 ended, and the studio felt like too many Terminator iterations would confuse audiences. Halcyon going bankrupt after its release and canceling its attempt at it starting a 2nd Terminator trilogy didn't help. And a major reason the Friday night time slot is a death slot on Fox (like it was for Firefly) is because shows were often pre-empted by MLB or NFL games, depending on time zone.

Re: Twin Peakes. It was never supposed to be about "Who killed Laura Palmer." The network took off with that conceptt, Lynch said "fu" and went to direct "Wild at Heart"... that said, I love it. The sheet music for "Falling" is tattooed on my right shoulder blade.

Damn straight, though Not Fade Away is my favorite tv finale of all time: Angel deserved a sixth season. And Wes should've become the CEO of WR&H; completing his journey as Angel's mirror.

The stupid thing about the hate blockbuster gets is that in real life Family Video still had stores all over n were still hanging on by a thread when covid hit.. So the plot being centered around a blockbuster that was still hanging on by a thread to this day made sense but god forbid people hop off the nostalgia train for anything other than superheroes or vampires

Netflix did not put Blockbuster out of business, Blockbuster put Blockbuster out of business if you watch the Netflix documentary Blockbuster was on the verge of putting Netflix out of business when the new CEO decided to switch the company focus off the direct to customer market and put the company focus on the high street stores in a time where a bigger percentage of the population day by day was looking for the direct to customer option if Blockbuster had kept there focus on the direct to customer rather than the high street stores its unlikely that Netflix would still be around today and Blockbuster would be the Giant that Netflix is now (even the CEO's of Netflix admit this on the Netflix documentary)

Although there were lamentable plot points after the reveal of Laura's killer, but ABC killed Peaks by a) making Lynch & Frost do the reveal and b) moving the show to Saturday nights.

When I heard they were doing a show about the last Blockbuster, I wondered what they would have the show do. It seems even the writers couldn’t figure out what to do with that setting. The show seemed to revolve around the store circling the drain, and even within the show, they couldn’t find value in the store. Setting it in the 90’s would have at least made it more fun, but they would still have needed a plot, not just a setting.

I was a huge fan of Heroes. I even watch the reboot in the early 2010s. The reboot suffered from pretty much the same problems of the original. You got it right when you said the first season of Heroes was awesome. The whole hunting of the cheerleader and Siler Story arc was awesome. It was riveting and kept me glued to every episode of that season. Then we started kind of going here in there with a story. Even time travel, and it was just weird. And then they brought the reboot in and that was a dumpster fire from the beginning. Yes, they brought back some of our favorite characters from the original. at the time the reboot of heroes came on, they tried to reboot the Muppets. Bob shows were horrific. But I would rather watch a bunch of puppets than the reboot. The sad thing about heroes is that it was a wonderful premise on paper. That first season show that it could be amazing. if they could have delivered a story are each season the show would have lasted. Give it a season long story arc just like the first season. Different situation maybe bring in some different characters each season and get rid of others. As the time is progressing in the world of heroes. yet writers that are compelling and know how to tell a story. The show still is a great idea. The bottom line is after the first season of the original, the rest of the original show and reboot, or poorly executed.

I mourn for Warrior Nun, the second season was even better than the first and it had so much potential to next seasons but the Netflix decided beforehand it will be no more. Literally no promo, no pushing on home page, no nothing, released between Crown and Wednesday, and cancelled few weeks later. Such a shame. It had interesting themes, badass action, georgeous cinematography and really intriguing characters.

4:04 It also didn't help that a lot of the storylines after revealing the kill were just weird for the sake of being weird (perhaps an inevitable consequence of others trying to replicate what Lynch does, which is weird but has internal logic and consistency). Agreed that _The Return_ was a fitting conclusion to the series.

"Julie and the Phantoms" cancellation after one season was Netflix inability to wait out the pandemic a little longer as vaccines hadn't fully taken hold yet--especially since it was produced in Canada. The show was a megahit around the world, won 3 Emmys, and had a hit soundtrack. Any other time, the show would have returned to production within 3 months after the season ended.
