Just bought myself a 996 911 Carrerra 4S and What a car it is to drive! Still beating C43 AMGs and M140is off the line
@ApothecaryTerry
@ApothecaryTerry 2 ай бұрын
Nobody should care if a 996 is faster than a C43 or M140i...it's a lose-lose to try - everyone assumes any 911 is faster, so if you win nobody cares, but if you lose you look like a muppet. On the other hand, while those cars are nice enough (although the W205 C-Class interior is one of the worst in the history of cars), nobody cares that they exist if you're there in a 911! I'd just sit there, let them go and enjoy the fact everyone is still, rightly, far more interested in your car, even if it's the "worst" 911. I say all this as someone who isn't that bothered by 911s and is vaguely considering a Merc as a next car (having considered BMWs about 50x but never bought one). 3 years of Porsche daily(ish) driving and I got used to letting the inevitable chav in every Fiesta ST ruin their clutch trying to prove something. 1/10 times I gave them a little demonstration, but mostly I just let them chav it up. Now, I drive a 308 GTi and it's the other way around - on a weekly basis someone in a Golf R or S3 will try to race me. No idea why - they have autos so prove no skill and everyone assumes they're much faster...which they are, from 0-20mph. They look properly stupid when they fail to keep up with a (basically un-modded) 1.6L Peugeot off a roundabout though. Couple of times doing that made me really realise - if I'm in a car people think is better, I'm not getting into it, there's no way to look good 🤣 Long-winded way of basically just saying: who cares if your 911 is faster than those cars, plenty of BMWs and Mercs will smash you off the line and still your car is better!

@@ApothecaryTerryvery well put and I would not add much but only say to follow up your point. I have an old Porsche 993 RS tribute, 2 years ago I was south of France going nicely and then a new 435i sport of some sort wanted to race me. I just backed off and continued enjoying my journey, a few moments later further up the road I saw the clown had a nasty accident (luckily no injuries by the looks of it) with another. Imagine if I’d engaged trying to prove what point. They both looked at me as I cruised by minding my own🤷🏾‍♂️🙏🏿

You'd be surprised. I daily drove a 981CS (as reviewed on this channel! Shameless JB plug...) for 3 years, did 20k miles and worked out that it cost me somewhere between 25-50% less net cost than if I'd have spent the same money on a diesel Golf (a new one, with no options). 3.4L but used to get high 40s MPG on a run, it cost £1k a year to repair and both servicing and tyres were £1k...but tyres lasted forever, servicing is 2 years/20k miles and the depreciation is negligible even now, which is where the Golf loses. For these mostly older cars, you'll get basically 0 depreciation and it won't fully offset the running costs vs a more normal car, but a 986 would be only about 10-20% more to own than a Fiesta ST for the same purchase price, for example. You could get unlucky with reliability - Porsches aren't great for that, except the 981 and Macan which are relatively solid, but they're not awful and you really can get a lot of generic VAG parts. They're also not hard to work on yourself, except mid-mounted engines...since they put parts in the wrong place so a lot of jobs are engine out. Overly detailed comment, long day, brain too fried to filter for conciseness, you get the idea 😄

Missed a crucial aspect of the 987 where the 987.2 engines did away with the IMS bearing and have significantly fewer bore score incidents. Very reasonable cars to run

Very important point from someone who had a 997.1 that suffered bore score in 2 cylinders so it’s far from a myth. Older cars 05 onwards being far more discovered and impacted in last 2 years interestingly.

As a Porsche fan, I can only love that video... After years of dreaming I took the plunge late 2022 to buy a 911 997 c2s, with a lot of work done to it. I absolutely love it... As classic Porsches are concerned, for me the 928 S4 is just stunning... And the Cayman (not yet a classic though) is great too. I was lucky to drive around the Goodwood track on a club members' morning (through a member I know) his Cayman S gen2 (track prepared) and it was a lot of fun indeed... So balanced...🔥. Not a fan of the SUV ones... Not a fan of the egg lights on the Boxster or 996, but they are cheap at the moment for sure... In terms of looks, I am biased though I admit, I think the 997 is the best looking 911, and not too wide still... After that, they really get too big and driving on small country roads would kill the enjoyment as they can't be much space on either side 😖🤐...

Depends which one you buy - 3 years of Porsche daily(ish) driving (981CS) for me cost less than 3 years of hybrid Lexus ownership, since depreciation on any Porsche over about 5-6 years old (even now) offsets the running costs, which generally aren't as bad as you'd think... I do regular 5+ hour journeys and that 3.4L Porsche used to average high 40s MPG, I regularly got 47-48 on a run, although could never quite get 50 🤔 I can barely match that in my 1.6L Peugeot!

Has to be said the 987 S is a hidden gem I hope people don't catch on I've been looking at adding one to the collection. Shove a proper exhaust system on that 3.4L and it sounds very similar to a 997 GT3RS but for like £10-£15k, the IMS isn't even the biggest concern with those porches it's also the bore scoring particularly on the 987/997 gen, Hartech engine rebuild and resleeve is £11k+ these days, keeps the prices cheap because people are scared. For anyone looking at porches I'd recommend buying one that has already had a hartech engine put in it, they are usually a few grand more but you can drive knowing the engine is strong and the major issues won't come up, unlike the normal engines which 75% of them at some point will need this work, they essentially grenade themselves.

As your dream was mine I’ll just tell you this….As an x owner of probably the most dangerous car I’ve ever owned is this. It’s not as quick off the line as you’d think, going through tight width barriers is a nightmare, the oversteer if you get it wrong with the turbo kicking in is truly frightening! BUT….. 2nd gear has an indicated 96mph ( bout 88 mph ) So if ur ever do get one, you strap your passenger in and floor it on a good long straight and it feels like you’re now taking off in a light plane as it bumps down the tarmac and once you select 2nd it just goes n goes n goes without a change. That’s my bestest memory ever of the most beautiful car l ever owned ( except the beautiful 2 seater E-Type that is….another oversteeringly little shit, but more controllable than the 911

My brother-in-law went out and bought a 924. If he’d consulted me, I’d have said to get a used 911 instead. Anemic Audi engine and terminal understeer made it in my opinion the worst Porsche ever. I test drove a used ‘86 944 turbo and was very happy with it. It had enough power to bring rear around, unlike the 924. ‘92 928 S4 was comfortable and on the track so much more balanced than my ‘87 911S. My favorite was the ‘90 C4 with an Albrex supercharger dyno’d at 450 hp. The turbos were rated at around 400 hp so I gave them a shock when they came to play. Don’t know about turbos today but I couldn’t stand the lag of the turbos back then. My love for Porsches began in high school. At 16, a new 911S started at $9000. Couldn’t wait to get one. Couldn’t afford it then. Grandma helped me get a used ‘70 914 1.7 in college and I gotta say I had many good memories with it. At 24 I could finally buy a 911. No, now they’re $18,000. Then $24,000 and by the time I could afford to buy a new Porsche in 1990, I paid just around $100,000 with that Albrex supercharger and other mods. 1991. That was my last Porsche. Kids, family, etc. 70 years old today and I still want a ‘73 RS… and a 959.

Favourite ever Porsche? I'm just going to go right ahead and cheat: the white one that appeared on this channel 😁 Genuinely though, for public road use I don't think I would pick any other Porsche. Others are faster, more luxurious and so on, but as an overall sports car package I don't think they've done anything more perfect. I'd pick a Macan or Panamera, but in both cases I'm not seeing a good reason to bother buying a Porsche. They're good, but there are cars which are basically better in every way from other brands, hence why I bought a GS450h and not a Panamera! Then turned down a Macan GTS for a Pug... I personally find the 968 to be aging very well - it's the most modern iteration of that era of Porsche design language. If only it had a flat 6 and not an I4.

@@CarsWithJB Porsche prices are dropping, but I feel like the 981 is still going pretty strong! There are only 3x 981CS on Autotrader for less than I paid for mine in 2020 and they're all equal/higher mileage. Whenever I look for a next car, my mind still tends to wander back to both the porker and the GS 😄 Won't have another of either, but that's mostly just because I need auto/carplay to take work calls while sat on the motorway 🤨

While all of these are tempting, my advice would be to absolutely avoid all of these at all cost. I owned a 1st gen Cayenne turbo for 5 years and while it was the best car ever, no matter the depreciation of the car itself, the replacement parts are new. With the then new price tag. They are impossible to keep running, a total financial disaster. Sure I had a 500 hp Porsche SUV, it was obviously very fun to daily it but the gas mileage was like 25 liter per 100 km. (9.4 mpg) And it was so ridiculously fast, that I couldn’t help but push it. So sometimes 28 L/100 km (8.4 mpg). When something broke down it was $1000 minimum. No matter if I took it to an authorized official Porsche service station, or to just a random mechanic. The parts were incredibly expensive. These are not new cars, so everything will break down constantly. It sounds inviting to drive a budget Porsche, but it’s obvious why you shouldn’t. The running and maintenance costs are not budget at all. I had to learn that the hard way and I stil bought a C5 corvette afterwards 😂😂 dream cars just pray nothing goes wrong. Which it will go wrong. Ultimately if u get any Porsche for like £10K just make sure you have another £20K to keep it running. And this brings to my point which is; just buy a £30K car instead. It’s no fun to own a car which is always at the shop and is an infinite money pit. Yeah there might be exceptions but usuall cheap luxury or cheap performance equals unpayable service fees and constant headaches and anxiety about money. I learned this the hard way. Had fun yes. But expensive fun. Sadly
