Their first album was titled "Spirit" and the cover was a montage of portions of the band members' faces. The song "Fresh garbage" stood out for me. The Motel 6 photo was on the cover of their second album, The Family that Plays Together. A weird aside: A friend and I were hitchhiking down the California Coast while I Got a Line on You was getting frequent airplay and Ed Cassidy and his wife picked us up on their way back from a gig in the Bay Area. Very nice and humble folks. I think it was around Santa Barbara I Got a Line on You came on the radio with its iconic drum part and Ed drumed his part on the steering wheel with his thumbs. Cool memory.

Excellent stuff Tim and thanks for doing what you obviously love to do.....60's, 70's and 80's music nerdery. Being in my early 60's, I grew up, as you did, listening to and loving the music, personalities, bands and general music scene of those special times......and the details really help tell the stories. Living around LA you have obviously had the chance to wonder these parks, neighborhoods, streets, and clubs that were all part of the west coast music scene and have gone through the work of sharing your knowledge.....Thank you! The 60's and 70's were a special time......raw, many new awakenings, experimental and more fun loving than the industry offers today. I also really enjoyed your Laurel Canyon series on the homes, studio's and artists of that era. Many of us older music lovers still enjoy this stuff, and over the past 20 yrs I've also dug back in to explore more of those musical details. I would love to see you or somebody good, do a tribute or series (or even better a movie/doc) on music producer Mike Vernon of "Blue Horizon Records" fame. Known more as a blues guy, he seemed to have had a hand in so many iconic groups and albums of the 60's both in the USA and England, and even played and wrote music a bit himself. Let me know if you ever need any help with a project like that. Thanks again for doing what you do.....which I call musical archeology....great stuff.

I go up to Summerland at least a few times a year. My favorite place in the entire USA!

I always get such time-bending, mind-bending visceral feelings from your posts. My thoughts: 1. AC\DC - Wow, would not have guessed that one. 2. Byrds - Imitation is thew sincerest form as they say, but that cover was just leaning too hard on Rubber Soul and it never felt that original or like it added anything. I love this Byrds album but never could get over that feeling that they could have tried harder on the artwork. Not bad, kinda like the Stones on Satanic Majesty's Request..."hey, I've seen something like this before and it was better the first time." 3. G&R - Bungalows, man, it is such a common thread running through ALL California that makes us all able be there now even decades later. I lived in several bungalows throughout the years, all over California. I bet you have too. Every time I see one in context of Rock music, I find it very grounding, a reference I can use to understand where they are coming from no matter the era or location. 4. Randy Newman - Surprising how many quick and dirty photos lacking pretension have become so iconic in Rock. 5. CSN - That house was a very very fine house. 6. S&G - Damn, another surprise, just as much as the Stones album had been. From the ends of the world to your door, as they say. Still, both bands (Stones and Simon and Garfunkel) looked out of place in nature in relation to the music they were making. 7. Yes - So, the record company said No to Yes for the billboard. My other thought is it is not that different from the Dirty Deeds cover in concept. LA is like a flower pressed into the pages of the imagination of the world. 8. Beach Boys - That was so cool, I've been there and didn't even know it. One of my favorite RocknRoll albums from when Rock was made by kids for kids. Good thing we're all kids at heart, still. 9. Weezer - Very hip to know, reminds me of an old girlfriend of mine who was on the Beach after school every day. A "honey" as the surfers used to say (i.e. "Some honey's will be coming along") 10. Eagles - Such a lovely place. Thanks man, great work as always.

These are really cool videos you put together. Interesting back stories that I've seen all my life right in front of me without knowing it.

Looks like the "Sounds of Silence" cover photo was taken from a ladder. Gives it a much better perspective.

That hadn't dawned on me but I think you're right. Now that i look at it I think the Rolling Stones pic that Guy Webster took there was as well. Good eye.

Hey Tim, Franklin Cny. Reservoir was also used as the lake in the opening credits of the old "Andy Griffith Show."

I love album covers. My favourite rock channel. Dallas Taylor in the window on the CS&N cover? Nick
@RockessentialTim3 күн бұрын
Well, Dallas didn't make the cover but he sure made the back cover with all the album info and speaking personally, I spent a lot more time staring at that than the front.

I note that you mentioned the Who's Next album at the end of your video. That cover was shot near where I live in Chesterfield in the UK at a place called Templed Normanton. The area was at the time being reclaimed after the ending of open cast coal mining and the concrete monolith was something to do with drainage. There has been a TV film crew looking at the site this summer whilst making a documentary about Ethan Russell, the photographer. Russell was present at the filming to confirm the exact location. The location is now a farmer's field with the ground now level with the top of the monolith.

Interesting stuff. For my money that cover is the greatest of all time. In my mind 2001 Space Odyssey had come out with the all powerful Monolith and The Who were taking a piss on it. Here comes the new boss, same as the old boss!
