Coincidentally my two best co-op partners might've been my mom and grandma in Streets of Rage 2 and Turtles in Time respectively and those were the only games they ever played. They always checked in for food items, checked for a clear path for throws and called for help/assisted accordingly. All of my friends growing up in one form or another were a menace. I think the last memorable couch co-op experience was Shaolin Monks with my little brother and I almost ripped my hair out. Granted I've played games with him when he was older like Bro Force and Guacamelee but MK really made me think back to when I had good tag partners

On the note of number 8, my dad was in the military and it made co-op much WORSE with him because he'd forget that he's trying to pull off a Spec Ops mission with a child 🤣 We only managed to eventually get all the original MW2 stars about a decade later! Quicker reflexes and gaining more confidence in my skills and pitching led to a lot more teamwork and success than just following orders in the past lol

This. I went to Arcades with my Dad when I was a kid. There was a helicopter game that we played that was really cool at the time. You sat down in it, had some of a helicopters actual controls. He was an apache pilot and played the game like he would if he was actually flying. He would stop, look at the map, orient himself, look at where the enemies are and plan out an attack. Whereas I am doing zoomies all over the map, shooting shit and launching missiles.

Yeah, it's an actual challenge to get some non-gamer play coop with you, this taught me to actually get a game that is not so reflex demanding and has few/simple controls, Portal is a great series for non-gamer, also to show them how good a puzzle game can be where they can take it slow, plan things out, then execute But other than that, every other coop game feels like a jump in difficulty after playing Portal with them

Been a fan of Gameranx for years but nothing hit quite so close to home as this vid. Thank you, Falcon and GR team for this well-thought-out out-of-the-box and heartfelt points about co-op. This is why I watch you guys regularly. Your passion for co-op and gaming can be felt! Cheers. One last thing, friendly-fire should ALWAYS be an option, not something that can't be turned off, especially for passionately hardcore co-op gamers. Wifey and I became involved due to our shared love for co-op, so I definitely wish developers put more emphasis in co-op gaming. Speaking probably naively here, but I think majority of games should include full co-op campaigns whether it breaks immersion or not, 'cause there is a huge community of co-op gamers such as myself who would love to explore huge, immersive open worlds for example with a co-op partner rather than compete or play single player. Those who don't like co-op can just choose the single player option. I just don't get why they don't.

04:00 #8 Try this with the recent free game "We Were Here Expeditions: The FriendShip" by developer "Total Mayhem Games". You can only play this game in COOP and communication is the key. While playing with friends it's fine but giving the option of cross-play, with randoms and switching servers is just idiotic by the developers if half the country does: A - not have a headset to continue. B - does not speak the language English in 2023 properly to explain symbols etc., in order to solve puzzles and move forward. Uninstalled the game for the above reasons after a few hours.

I usually just give vauge descriptions of what to watch for like when adds spawn in that need to be taken care of but i wont say from where and what kind of enemies.

We had a rule that you cant halt progress untill we hit town. That means no weapon swapping, or leveling bs. If everyone agrees you can all warp anytime. But that made things WAY more streamlined. I struggle with COOP games with so much loot/inventory management. It’s such a pain when you have limited time and any session has 30 mins of setting up equipment, or a mission, or just trying to get the other player to join in general. We had a rule growing up that there was no backseat gaming allowed unless you were specifically asked for help. For the most part people just want to facilitate the fun being had, but it was of a better help to limit the amount of bad directions someone might give: "Go left...no, _left_ not _that_ left! Why won't you listen!? Go _left_ but not _that_ way...you're doing it wrong!" Better to just figure it out yourself if people won't take the time to learn how to provide clearer instructions.

Number one, by far!!! Having to carry and perform exponentially better to progress. I mean, come on. How much do you hate me not to put in more effort? I would also like to chill, but if we are always losing, that is NOT chill.

From my experience playing co op online with random people, the rushing type is the most common, as if they want to break a speed world record or something.

Picking the right game also just comes down to what mood people are in. Sometimes people just aren't on the same page for the genre

Number 3 is super subjective. I understand the frustration of waiting on the person who takes forever in the vendor menu when the team is ready to move on, but at the same time with crafting being so common now, I hate the "pro" who just wants to run through a quest when I need to loot these containers.

I’ve encountered #3 a few times. Those people are their own worst enemy, especially in games like Left 4 Dead or World War Z. Slow down, take your time but don’t take too long. Never do anything that’ll get you separated from your team, you’ll most likely either die or take a lot of damage. Your teammates won’t be able to save you if you’re on the other side of the map, so stick with them instead of shopping for too long or rushing ahead.

The funnest co-op game for me when I was younger was COD Black Ops 2. My friend and I were about 10ish and he would come over and we would play for hours on Zombies. We even nicknamed the giant in buried Billy 😅😅😅

Number 7 is jus so damn true that hurts only to think about it. Normally I'm the one gathering the whole group telling what to do: "You tell me when the tutorial is done", "No, no first you need to create a account so we can add each other"... And all that to end up playing 30 minutes after a 2 hours set up.

It seems like the main problem in playing co-op games is that you play with other people

#5 - Old school arcade Gauntlet or Gauntlet II. You elves out there know who you are!

Random little note in the video. All of my buddies in the marines and army are the woooorst at communicating in a co-op game. Instead of communicating it's usually "Shut up so i can focus"

Best way to play Co-op with a non-gamer is to have them take to the other team and watch the chaos insue.

I really felt this... I am absolutely the 'leader' but I only help when it's asked... but then the person says "oh but you can just do this and skip it" and I have to point out "we aren't playing the game just to skip the game?!?!" Another one is playing games with someone who doesn't care about the game... you're doing a puzzle and they just say 'this is really stupid and boring' because they can't figure out the puzzle as quick as you... really annoying.... ... i am the 'explorer' type, I enjoy moving around and messing with the game itself, unless i'm on another persons save, then i'm just rushing xD I generally take my time w/ my own story though, i.e. playing Borderlands 2 with some buddies atm and they just want to rush the game.
