The market always dictates the current price on collectibles, not trends or previous prices. I'm willing to bet all the 'outliers' that sell for cheap are purchases mainly by dealers like yourself hoping the price you're paying is low enough you can resell it at a profit. Just remember it can always go lower and you can end up with overpriced inventory unless you can hold on to it for what may be months or years, who knows!

I think a lot of people will hold onto their books until things start to recover, which will help boost the prices. If not, I'm gonna get some killer deals.

This reflects my forecast from 8 months ago. Prices are currently plummeting, and it seems we haven't reached the lowest point yet. I anticipate that the bottom might not be reached for another 3 to 6 months. As you pointed out, now could be an excellent opportunity to acquire items at rock-bottom prices if you have disposable income.

You are so right, the economics of the time can and do have a substantial impact on the value of things in the market. As prices for essentials at the grocery store climb, the amount of money the consumer has left for discretionary purchases diminishes which dictates what people are willing to spend on those non-essentials like comic book collectables

Grading FEH! The only books that should be graded are ones that are normally expensive, I wouldn't grade a book unless it's worth more than $1000 or just good and unique. I'm using this market to get the stuff I sold years ago.

No offense, but the biggest problem with most of these books are they feature characters no one cares about at the moment. For old-school Punisher readers, Micro-Chip is a big deal. But most current readers have no idea who he is. As far as Moon Knight, everyone is chasing that Werewolf by Night #32 rather than his first solo series. And a lot of the other books are just things that once were pretty popular, but have trended down. Or they're just not rare enough. Some will eventually go back up. And some have probably had their day. Like Preacher.
@jimbomba4365 Жыл бұрын
The funny thing about most of the comics listed in both videos is that they haven't really seen a value drop on raw copies, just slabbed copies. Moon Knight # 1 is probably the most significant drop on it's raw copy value. When everybody had Moon Knight Fever a few years back even random back issues with no key significance were selling for $20 - $30 at cons and online, and for years I've never seen a copy sell on eBay for under $100 in any condition. After years of trying, I just bought a raw 8.5 on eBay for $20 and I thought I'd gotten a hell of a deal...until I looked up the value and saw that it'd just dropped from $120 to $60. And $120 is what it dropped to after "market correction" from it's previous highs. Still, got it for one third of it's current FMV, so I'm hardly disappointed, but it's crazy how pretty much every Moon Knight comic across the board has plummeted like a stone...and still continue to drop.

None of this surprises me. The population of collectors is shrinking. There are very few new entrants - virtually no kids, new comics are $3.99, sold ONLY in comic stores. So, with some number of long time collectors leaving the hobby because new stuff doesn't resonate with them, or they're ageing out (getting married / kids ) or dying. No pluses, only minuses, means there are less people to buy these and all the other 1000 supposedly "Key" modern books. Then when, those who leave dump them to a dealer, there's less people who want them, so dealers cut their prices. Wolverine, Punisher, Teen Titans, X-Men are mostly collected only by old-timers now, and the stampedes to Morbius, Modok, Taskmaster, Ms. Marvel, Moonknight, pass like gas, so even the newer collectors are worn out. There are far more copies of modern books than the number of people who want them. And, it's worse for 9.8 slabs - a $10 book that no one wants, in $30 of plastic, is not something that people will pay $60 for. Prices all modern books are heading down until a equilibrium is reached.

Natural rate of inflation will cause collectibles to drop in price. If you can't afford to buy food or pay rent/mortgage, you have to start liquidating your stuff. Collectibles are the first to go.

Detective Comics #583 was Alan Grant's 1st Batman story ! He just passed away in 2022
@jimbomba4365 Жыл бұрын
And starting with that issue, Alan Grant wrote Batman on a monthly basis for 11 straight years (February 1988 - February 1999). That is a hell of an accomplishment, and it’s baffling that more fans don’t talk about it in the same breath as other longtime creator runs.

Here’s where everyone throws rotten eggs at me for this opinion. So I worked at the very first comic book store in CT many many years ago. The owner was one of the comic retailer OGs and knew everyone in the business like Chuck from Mike High comics and many other long established comic book pioneers. So here’s my hot take. When CGC came on the scene he hated the concept and said they would end up killing our beautiful hobby. In many ways I have to agree. There are a lot of positives so I’m not coming at this like I’m a hater. So please give me some grace as it’s just an opinion. Here are some issues that I think have damaged the hobby. First if you’ve submitted to CGC I’m sure you’ve experienced the wild swings in grading consistency which sucks. I also feel that the census artificially manipulated grading. I won’t name names but having spoken with prominent folks at CGC I was disturbed by how they spoke of the census and how it influences grading i.e. if all of a sudden they think there are too many Avengers #4 Captain America returns copies in High grade then grading gets a lot harder. And that my friends goes against the spirit and charter of what CGC is supposed to be about! The grade should be the grade and not influenced by any factors other than the defects of the actual book. CGC has also killed pricing because the disparity between a raw and slabbed book is crazy and while I am on board with a difference in pricing as it should be - I think it’s way overboard. The health of the hobby is not good as back in the day folks actually bought the books to read and enjoy. I filled in runs and didn’t just care about “keys” as everyone is speculating like crazy. Now with the reholder scandal it feels like the hobby is in a really fragile state. I think it could be fixed but it has to start with consistent grading and not manipulating grading guidelines due to the census. The census should serve as a factual record keeping metric. If there are a gazillion 9.8s of a book so be it as long as the grading is consistent. We should dial the grading up or down because “too many copies are on the scene. I think the recent scandal puts CGC at a critical point in their history. Hopefully they make the right calls and learn from this. We need more consistent grading across the board. We need more secure cases the higher up the cost and rarity ladder you go. Don’t you think it odd that my copy of Ultimate Spiderman 1 gets the same exact treatment and holder of an Amazing Fantasy 15? That is kind of nutty right? And I’m embarrassed that I never even gave it a second thought. Anyway as Spock would say “Live long and prosper” my fellow comic friends! Hopefully what’s going on now is just a phase and will work its way through to a better comic environment.

I myself was actually advised to actually Only basically collect the first Ten Issues of any and all types of various Characters and Titles actually Being published and eventually put out to Comic Collectors like as a kid myself back then in the mid 70's as this would most likely afford me to actually keep up with Many various types of Newer Comics and eventually avoiding on literally missing out on Every New Characters and Titles basically that would sometimes and could appear Every Month and to actually and eventually catch up with the Back Issues later on down the line,but nowadays there are just too Many Comics To actually Buy and Choose From Currently so now I actually hold on to all of my 1st Issues Of All Known Titles from (1966-2024)and actually watch how things are actually going for other Comic Book Collectors Themselves basically While actually searching for New Characters and Titles Titles nowadays in More efficient ways-"Thank,I will be watching." Yeah,Im actually One Of The Older Collectors of 55 years now,and still prefer actually Having the Older Comics nowadays but most of the Newer Comics Arent All That Bad.

"natural rate of inflation." No, this isn't an item that has a set price of, say, $30 day in and day out. These are collectibles that ebb and flow with demand. The best equation would be oil. Oil doesn't start at a price and rise every year because of inflation. It's a commodity that ebbs and flows due to certain conditions. Same with slabbed books. The Preacher show is over. No one knows much about this book and no one cares about this book from a collectible standpoint. Great reading BUT you can't read a slab.
