3:10 I also remembering hearing from somewhere that if lightning struck the kite and conducted to the key, when Benjamin Franklin touched the key, he would have died. 4:40 Also, I remember hearing from somewhere that Stalin did expect a Nazi invasion, just not right then. Maybe later. 8:20 There's still debate whetever the Xia Dynasty existed. Whetever a whole Chinese dynasty existed or not. ... Interpreting history is hard.

Stalin definitely did expect a German invasion. They werent stupid. They knew that ze Germans wanted some "living space" in the east. They were preparing for war. The thing is, their tactic was to not fight the Germans at the border but do a retreat to a fallback line, using scorched earth tactics to deprive the Germans of food and other things to loot, then fighting them when their supply lines were extended. They retreated so far that the Germans were almost at Moscow, and all the way to Stalingrad in the south. Only then did they commit to full scale war. Had they tried to fight the Germans at full strength on the borders, they would have lost. This whole thing about Germany unexpectedly breaking the Molotov-Ribbentropp pact and invading a surprise pikachu face Russia is way overblown. Also, even if hypothetically they didnt expect Germany to invade, they would still have been preparing to invade the German occupied land to get back what once belonged to the Russian empire. That non-aggression pact was literally 2 guys shaking hands while holding a knife behind their back with the other hand, and they both knew it. Its kind of sad how so many people think people that lived a few decades ago were dumb. Its not like we are so special.

The City of Troy thing is actually up for debate, entirely thanks to Heinrich Schliemann who TNT'd the site that the City of Troy was thought to have stood. Thanks to that we've lost artefacts that post-date 3000BC, which the trojan war is thought to be around 1194 and 1184 BC, you can imagine what we lost thanks to that event. Also I was hoping you'd add in that Benjamin Franklin was never a president of the United States, and he's not the only person on a paper bill that isn't a president either.

No, it is only debated by people like Jacob Wilkens who believes Troy was in England, or people like Felice Vinci who believe the Odyssey took place in the Baltic. The fact of the matter is, the site at hisarlık *precisely* matches Homer's description of Troy. And while Schliemann's excavations were damaging, it was nowhere near enough to destroy the ancient citadel (not to mention he didn't even know about the lower city) and evidence of warfare and destruction havs been found like arrowheads and burns marks in Troy VI-Troy VII Also, there's external evidence to support the site of Hisarlık being Troy, like the Hittite records, which mention the city of "Wilusa" (Ilios in Greek), which is another name for Troy.

Adding onto the misconception about Benjamin Franklin: There's little to no historical evidence that he actually ever carried out the kite experiment, mostly because, key or not, he would have been fried or significantly burned by the transference of energy from the lightning strike, as the key would not serve as an exit-point for the current. Franklin wrote a letter about the proposed experiment to a friend, where he may have theorized about the outcome of the findings, but he never wrote down how the experiment actually went down, making it less likely to have occurred at all. The only other mention of the experiment comes in a book FIFTEEN years later, with the only source for the experiment being conversations with Franklin himself. At no point was there collected any data from the experiment, there was never any third party witnesses who could verify Franklin's proposed setup, and furthermore, when a German scientist named Georg Wilhelm Reichmann tried to perform the experiment according to Franklin's proposed setup, he died when the kite was struck by lightning in 1753. In other words; Benjamin Franklin almost certainly NEVER carried this experiment out at all.
@8beef4u3 ай бұрын
I understood the experiment not to be a kite getting struck by lightning, but the coper wire transmitting the charge difference in the atmosphere down the wire to the key where it shocked his hand after sufficient buildup of charge. Which is much more believable. I've also heard it never happened.

Fun fact: the trojan war did actually happen. They found the actual city of troy and found that at one point, roughly around the same time the trojan war was happening, that the city was burnt down. The leading theory is that troy was a wealthy city state during the bronze age that was invaded by a collection of greek kings who were seeking its riches when wealth dried up in greece itself. Its also possibly the catalyst that lead to the bronze age collapse.

I'm not really sure that the German one is really a common misconception. Most people understand Germany got caught in winter like Napoleon dead during the invasion. What the actual misconception is would be the belief that Russia somehow organized a winter counter attack when in reality the mud and cold that came with the winter also effected the Russian military just as much. The only battle that really occured in the winter was urban conflict in Moscow, Leningrad, and Stalingrad where the winter didn't prevent really any offensives given a lack of mud being a problem.
