The initial proxy wars the superpowers engaged in to avoid attacking each other directly has evolved into the congressional-military-industrial complex. Domestic arms industry is a strategic asset, but outside of basic small arms everything is way too expensive for public retail. Until (relatively) recently individuals didn't have the kind of wealth needed to afford the weapons of war. The only customers who could afford to buy, especially in enough volume to keep profitable, are states. So the future of a US arms manufacture may just hinge on getting that government contract. That makes them motivated lobbyists in congress where budgets for the public purse get approved. It's a mutual relationship, but what happens when you reach market saturation? Is a company to weather decades of drought just because America has enough weapons? Planned obsolescence in this market is dangerous in more ways than one. But there is a solution in US foreign policy! Thanks congress! Now congress can send billions of dollars of aid to foreign nations and organizations that align with a policy goal. The aid gets paid in surplus armaments or new orders from US companies. On top of that you don't need to risk American lives directly, the recipients of the aid packages put them to use. It's such a great cycle that other countries have started emulating it too.

First of all: No offense to you. I like your content. Now for a few facts. 10. Dubai is a City in United Arab Emirates (UAE). Saudi Arabia is next to UAE but a total different Country. It's always funny to see the non believing faces of US Americans when they realized they aren't welcome. 9 & 8. There's nothing surprising of Russia and Cuba. Both were on the other side of the iron curtain of the USA in the cold war and target of the CIA and many US military operation all over the world. 7. To say the USA left a "mess" in Iraq is the understatement of the year and pure sarcasm. Iraq is one of the countries with the highest burden of mines and unexploded ordnance in the world. Around 20 million landmines and between 2.6 and 6 million unexploded ordnance remain in the country. These are a direct result of the war with Iran (1980-1988 with 1,38 mil war death), the Gulf War of 1991 (up to 100,000 war death) and the US-led invasion in 2003 (up to 500,000 war death according US studies). Thousands of people have been killed or injured in Iraq by landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) contaminating the country and are still being killed and injured by them every day. But it is still not understandable why the USA is not the most popular country in Iraq, is it? 6. Why doesn't the speaker mention that the USA first supplied weapons in the war in Yemen since 2015 and later, together with the UK, France and Germany, bombed the Houthis? That might explain better why large parts of the population don't really love the USA. 5. Venezuela has only itself to blame. Just like Iran, a country with oil has elected a socialist government and is trying to share the country's resources with the population. This is not possible, because the USA cannot decide who extracts the oil (e.g. Halliburton) and how high the price should be. Because at home in the States, people vote at the gas pump. The lower the price, the greater the chance of re-election. (Sarcasm off) 5. Afghanistan, what the f@ck ist this guy talking about? First, the USA supported the warlords (including Osama bin Laden) for decades in their fight against the Russians, who invaded Afghanistan in 1979, with weapons and military advisors in order to destabilize the government and drive out the Russians. After the Russians withdrew, they simply pissed off and left the country to its own devices. In this chaos and the struggle for supremacy between the warlords, first ISIS and then Al-Qaeda emerged. After 9/11, the US decided to attack Afghanistan because 19 terrorists (15 Saudis, 2 UAE, 1 Egyptian and 1 Lebanese) destroyed to dust the Twin Towers with people, attacked the Pentagon and tried to attack the White House with airplanes. The leader of this operation and former best friend of the USA, Osama Bin Laden, was also a Saudi. According to US logic, the sovereign state of Afghanistan therefore had to be bombed beyond recognition. The USA left the same "mess" there like in Yemen, millions of landmines. Since 2011 after more than 100,000 civilian casualties killed and injured as a result of hostilities in Afghanistan, these should at least be mentioned when someone tries to explain why Afghans are a little outraged at the US. 2. Why are US Americans hated in Somalia? It's a bit longer story. After the British protectorate of Somaliland and the Italian colony of Somalia gained their independence in 1960, they united to form the Republic of Somalia. The parliamentary democracy ended in corruption and nepotism and led to a coup by General Siad Barre in 1969, who established a socialist progressive dictatorship with the help of the Soviets. In order to “liberate” Somalis in the Horn of Africa and establish a “Greater Somalia”, Somalia attacked Ethiopia in 1977. In response, the Soviet Union withdrew its support from the Somali government, which then turned to the USA. This was followed by one of the largest proxy wars between the USSR and the USA of the Cold War, which ended with Somalia's defeat (1978). In order to fend off the armed opposition movements, Barre secured his power with the help of an alliance of various Darood clans, US and Western support. The guerrilla war against the Barre regime escalated in 1988 and led to the overthrow of the government three years later. The repeated interventions led by the USA were also counterproductive and Somalia has been considered a failed state ever since. After decades of war and many famines, here, too, the USA was unable to bomb its way into the hearts of the Somalis. Now there a bit stroppy. How ungrateful of the Somalis. But to be honest, other Westerners have the same chance of being kidnapped, not just Americans. It's all about the money, just like in the USA! 1. Nobody is welcome in North Korea. Why is the war waged by the USA not mentioned here? The Korean War from 1950 to 1953 was a military conflict between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and its ally the People's Republic of China on the one side and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and United Nations troops led by the USA on the other. Alongside the war in Afghanistan from 1978 to 1989 and the Vietnam War, it was the largest proxy war of the Cold War. How do you think most people outside of North America and Europe would describe their first encounter with Americans? My guess is: someone kicked in my door and yelled to me at gunpoint: "Freeze motherfucker!" 😘

There are a few more blemishes on western reputation with the UN peacekeepers sent to Somalia too. Strictly speaking I think the accord with DPRK is an armistice, they are "technically" still at war since their first "great leader". I'm not sure if this extends to the UN member states they fought too.

@@ravenward626 yes, you're probably right, but I'm not trying to give a history lesson here. I just wanted to list a few facts about why the US isn't a front runner in the "Best Buddy of the Century" popularity contest. According to most US politicians, it's simply because everyone is jealous of their freedom. But that's not even a little bit true.

@@norrinradd2364 If it's any consolation I think social media has made many in roads to connecting Americans with news that gets filtered out by most domestic media. Seems like the folks looking through their media bubble is growing. They may not have the great digital wall of China to keep them isolated, but language barriers have segregated a lot of media. I have high hopes for AI translations helping there too. I think a lot of the ignorance is just from a lack of exposure, or a lack of need to learn about history. People be busy surviving paycheck to paycheck.

Here's an example of things americans do to annoy others, in the year 2000 a film was released called U-571, americans capture a nazi submarine with the first enigma code machine on board, now if you check history you'll find that in 1941 before america entered the war the British ship HMS bulldog did this very thing, in fact the allies captured code machines or books 15 times during the war 13 by brits 1 by Canadians and 1 by you guys in 1944, enigma was checked out by polish spys in 1928 and what they new they handed to us and the French just before they were invaded in 1939. Now this sort of thing can be annoying.

Cuba is such a unique country to visit and a special experience. I've met a fair few Canadians there who travelled without incident from the locals, who probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Canadian and most American accents. When Cubans have an economically hard time it's mainly due to the hard embargo that's been in place for decades.

Weird, I come from a western country which is allied to the US and have been to Cuba, and more then a thousand US-Americans have been there at the same time. They were very welcome there, but they were afraid of repression, when they got home to their repressive country. And before that, they had a hard time to get, there, not because Cuba had any problems with the visit, but because the US did. The worst thing, normal friendly US-americans had to fear in Cuba, was free healtcare. You know, who offered medical and logistical aid first, when hurricane Kathrina hit the US (which was not accepted)? I hate it, when people twist reality to make places like Cuba appear to be a hostile place for US visitors, as if people there had a hatred for normal US- working class people.

Not American, but I'd much rather go to Cuba than Iran (which wasn't on this list). I've heard Cubans are really nice people. Maybe because I'm not American, I'd feel safer to go there. It's common to go to Cuba for non-Americans so in general it's seen as a pretty safe destination. I watch a channel with this woman from Canada and she went to Cuba recently. I thnk she had a good time, as she was talking avout taking selfies at the beach. She's Canadian, so you figure the chances of her being mistaken for an American by the locals is pretty high.

The term "Middle East" has led to some confusion over its changing definitions,[2] and being seen as too Eurocentric.[3] The region includes the vast majority of the territories included in the closely associated definition of West Asia, but without the South Caucasus, and additionally includes all of Egypt (not just the Sinai) and all of Turkey (not just the part barring East Thrace)."
