In this video, we're looking at 10 unique ways animals and plants defend themselves.
1. Horned lizards shoot blood from their eyes
2. Sunbitterns use their wings to look like a larger animal
3. Bombardier beetles shoot boiling hot liquid
4. Fulmars vomit on their predators
5. Stick and leaf insects defend themselves any way possible
6. Sensitive plants move when touched
7. Cecropia trees provide a home for defensive Azteca ants
8. Slow lorises use armpit toxin to create a toxic bite
9. Flying fish soar above the waves to escape
10. Mammals, amphibians, and reptiles launch themselves from trees to fly to safety.

@@all.about.nature1987 I honestly can't believe how few views that video got. Weird what gets 1M views, while some high quality content like that Steller Sea Cow vid gets practically no views. Thanks for the quality content btw, I appreciate how your videos aren't geared for the ultra-low attention span viewers like most channels are.

One of my favorite examples of a strange defense mechanism is the hairy frog. If threaten they will literally break their own fingers to expose their fingerbones to use them as weapons. The ribbed newt has a similar defense, but this animal is bending its back to expose the tip of their spine after expelling a venom out of their skin.

5:36 - 6:10 Why do I feel like the Gannetwhale's ability from "The Future is Wild" was partially inspired by this seabird?

Yes, some seabirds use vomit which is what inspired the Gannetwhale’s special ability.

Horned lizards “go and stop to confuse predators”? I thought the stop-start was because most lizards can’t run and breath at the same time.

i like how many lizards’ defense mechanism is to simply self destruct. i assumed the horned lizards had some sort of valve or gland that let them squirt out blood like bombardier beetles with their crazy heat liquid, but instead they have to explode their heads a lil 😭 i wonder if it hurts…. lizards out here losing their tails, bursting their blood vessels, what’s next….

Great video as always. I love learning about animals. I also think an incredible defense mechanism is used by the hooded pitohui. They produce poison from their diet and are toxic to touch producing unpleasant tingling, numbness, and more. All these critters are so cool!

This is a very interesting video, I do wonder if you'd ever consider doing a list video on prehistoric animals, seems it could be cool as you already do extinct and living animals and there's tons of obscure ones out there

In our country, we call Mimosa Pudica "Makahiya". "Hiya" means shy in our country. We're basically implying that the plant feels shy whenever we touch it, so that's why the leaves fold.

Huh, I didnt know about flying frogs or lizards. Would it be unreasonable to assume thats where ancient Asian cultures got the idea of dragons from? Maybe a long time ago, they used to be a bit larger...

I kind of assumed someone found a dinosaur skeleton back then and maybe that’s where the dragon myth came from 🤣

The flying snakes do look like Eastern dragons in body shape and movement. They’re in SE Asia now, but maybe they had a wider range before? Dinosaur bones are behind a lot of ancient myths, but since that wouldn’t “explain” how people thought they moved, I suspect it was a mix of animals they encountered and giant bones making everything bigger. The story of 5 blind men and an elephant comes to mind. 😂
