As the story got told over time the term power monkey was forgotten and people started to reference that an actual monkey was captured, tried and hung. There would be no reason to have an actual monkey on board but they did use children. Usually the most simplest or rational explanation is the correct one.

the monkey story is only a legend with no actual evidence to back it up other than a folklore tale. even then the tale has been told in 2 to 3 different ways via song (which was common for spreading stories back then) all the tales having a different reason for killing the monkey one stating a fisherman hung the monkey because it had a knife and another stating that bodammers hung it. that doesnt mean it didnt happen either but the fact we have barley any evidence other than random songs that dont even match the story really begs the question "is this real". in fact i have even heard one theory that they hung a boy who was wearing a french uniform and was believed to be one of the lads that cleaned the cannons etc. so being a french soldier still they hung him. it was then later told as the monkey story. which again is thought to be derived of the name "powder monkey" which is what they called the young children who did that job. again suggesting that they sung songs mocking what happened or telling the tragic tale of this boy calling him by his work name "monkey" and now everyone things they hung a monkey.
