This! Everyone wants to complain about ships not being built to withstand strong storms, and cities not having good enough infrastructure to withstand these storms to but it wouldn’t make a difference if we did or didn’t…..Mother Nature doesn’t care at all for how much money, and materials we put into storm safety because she will still be more powerful than all of us.

In case of an emergency the situation is completely out of control!!!! Thousands of unprepaired passengers, hundreds of half-trained crew, tens of nationalities…. Often power will break down, the ship will list, moving about will be hard, communication will become impossible…. At a listing ship half of the lifeboats can not be deployed…. If you don’t believe me look up the demise of the ‘Costa Concordia’!!…. And that happened in perfect weather with no wind or waves worth mentioning…. The simple fact she miraculously stranded on a smal shelve on an islands’ shore doubtlessly saved THOUSANDS of lives!! You will NEVER see me boarding a cruiseship…..

The MTS Oceanos story is another good one. In 1991 the captain and crew abandoned the ship and its passengers during a bad storm! Only due to the ships onboard entertainers, who radioed the coast guard for help, did everyone get airlifted to safety. The one man who figured out how to use the radio and saved everyone because of it, was Moss Hills a true legend!

My late father was a WWII veteran, and when returning home from Europe on a Liberty ship, the vessel encountered a fierce winter storm on the North Atlantic. Many is the time that I listened with fascination to his account of the ship being tossed in this terrible storm, causing the passengers to wonder if they had survived the war only to drown on the way home. Thankfully, they made it back home- but watching videos such as this causes me to have at least some idea of how frightening that experience must have been for my dad and the other people. Thanks for this presentation; it was interesting.

The second clip, the 2019 Viking Cruise off the coast of Norway, perfect example of why all furnishings on a ship should be secured in place while underway. There are systems to lock the furniture down and release it for moving to a different position.

@mikestrohm3271
@mikestrohm3271 Жыл бұрын
@@Phushprada1 The securing of furnishings would be normal in ferries for example that only sail a direct route which can't be changed. This is a cruise ship which can change course to avoid storms, this weather would not have been a problem for any cruise ship except for the loss of engines which exacerbates weather conditions. I was a senior officer on four different cruise lines and have been through dozens of storms and none had the effect shown in this clip simply because the engines were running and the stabilisers were working. Your comment also shows you have no understanding of cruise ships and how well they weather storms. Plates, glasses and bottles are not kept in secure cabinets as there is no need.

I'm a retired Helicopter Aircrewman and Rescue Swimmer with the U.S. Navy. In 1985 returning from a 7 month Med deployment, we hit the tail end of a hurricane. We were detached to the au.S.S. Kids DDG 993, the sea was so rough we were consistently being pounded by waves and at times we were listing up 40°. We were part of the U.S.S. Eisenhower CVN-69. The Ike was on n our starboard side about 4-5 miles away and she was playing submarine. You know it's rough when an nuclear aircraft carrier was being hit with seas so high, the flight deck was being submergered.

Marine Engineer from the Royal Navy. At times being in the main boxes was better in heavy seas as low in the ship and in the middle lessened the movement we would feel. Sometimes, during heavy seas, I was grateful that I had work to do or was watchkeeping so I could get down the spaces. The whole ship would be in bed other than watch watchkeepers, and I was glad sometimes as working took my mind off just how bad it feels on a Destroyer when you get force 7 and above.

Those Hamburg harbour ferries are actually built to withstand even worse weather. The window breaking was caused by material fatigue, all ferries were checked again, it was just bad luck it hit that one out of all the ferries going that morning. Nothing worse than a few scratches for the guy who had been sitting right in front of the broken window, and for everyone a scare and wet feet. At least, this time going to work actually wasn't as boring as usual!

I once traveled from L.A. to Catalina Island with family aboard a small ship. Halfway there, the waves intensified to the point that it was near impossible to walk around. The only thing we could do was stay in one place and hold on. On the way back, I went up to the highest deck, grabbed the rail, and held on tightly while looking over the side. The ship rocked so hard that I could see either all ship or all ocean.

There was a bad storm once when we on a Viking Line (Finland, not Viking Cruises) ship between Helsinki and Stockholm. It was in December, so there was also ice in the water, and the crew told us in the morning that the captain stayed up all night for that one. They stayed in visual contact all night with a Siljaline ship as well, you could see it from the windows. It was definitely rocking and rolling, and then that sick feeling when you hear the ice grate against the hull.

I recently was on the Carnival Sunshine, we did encounter a storm while heading to Princess Cays in the Bahamas. Sadly we couldn’t get to the island because of the swells and another ship that was already there almost capsized while trying to leave so they didn’t move for over a day. Hats off to both ship captains and crews for keeping the patrons safe.

Anthem of the seas clip is normal, the cabin is on the lowest deck of the passenger cabins way below the lifeboat deck as can be seen on the image of it, the square windows are passenger cabins and are roughly 15 to 20 feet above the waterline so waves hitting them happens all the time.

Earlier this year in June I was aboard the carnival Mardi Gras, one of the largest ships in the carnival line. We were going through the Caribbean, and remember the seas being super rough during the entirety of this 10 day trip. My butt was clenching so hard, I’m pretty sure it got muscle built lol… if I was on such a large ship and IT was getting rocked around, I can’t imagine being on anything smaller without actually crapping myself. Anyway, I’m going on another cruise this upcoming summer along Mexico!

The power of the ocean is something you have to see to truly understand and believe. Just watching a video of it is not enough. Ah, the Irish crossings will put hair on your chests. As a kid in the 80s we got stuck just 10 miles from Dublin overnight on a very old ferry. Everyone was crying, with no possible rescue as the storm was too bad. Corridors in life jackets and sick bags. There were priests heading up groups of women cracking out novenas. The new fleet brought in through the 90s were game changers. No one even left the bars, regular travellers were like battle hardened sailors. Us Teens like 'this is nothing, we've seen sh!t'.

The big problem on Viking Sky was that the oil level for all the engines was at the minimum mark, apparently that was quite normal at the time of the incident in the company. That did not go well when the ship encountered rough weather, making all engines (4 of them, if I remember correctly) fail.
@KSguitarmusic
@KSguitarmusic 10 ай бұрын
Yes we lost all 4. It was later determined that, as a result of drifting, we were a ship's length away from likely hitting the rocky coastline. VERY fortunately, they got an anchor to hold. We could not launch the boats due to the bad conditions. My wife and I were among the 400+ who were evacuated by helicopter.

Why would a cruise liner engine team choose to operate at minimal lubricant level during a sequence of putting out to sea? That seems one step from being criminally negligent in overall operational scheme & consideration of safety toward your passengers. Someone in charge of such things who "made the call" should have answered to hearings & investigated for possible applicable charges. Was this somehow a norm in operations across the industry? Very problematic if it was..

This happened to us on the QE2 in the North Atlantic. Captain took in the stabilizers to have better control. We docked 18 hours late, as he made a detour around the worst of the storm. Our cabin was 6 or7 decks up from the waterline; the water came over the window! Everything! In the dining room was in a big pile that slid back and forth as the ship pitched and rolled. What a scene! Luckily, we weren’t seasick so we sat at the bar on stools that rotated with the motion.

That second clip gets me every time. The people sitting there define the word stupid. There's literally a one thousand pound piano waiting to break free from the floor and crush everyone in it's path. A lady literally gets hit in the head with a ceiling panel and doesn't move an inch while it's swinging around waiting to hit her again. There's a glass table dancing around the room just begging to remove somebodies legs in a cinematic fashion. The guy filming even says "get that on video", like it's going to be used as evidence of how the cruise liner can control the weather and make people not be absurdly clueless. People, is the worse person to be around when common sense and self preservation will save your life.
