Finished the video! Yep, can't wait to get a nice, used belt to try this. It's also nice that we can get 2/3 straps from a standard belt; that way we can try different ways on finishing it up, length and other stuff. Great video, will have to buy one of those punching tools, those seem to help a lot and keep it as clean as possible. Once again, great video and thanks for investing the time in making this for us!

Hey thanks Bernardo!! I hope to see a photo of your strap when you get it finished! And yea the fact that you can get a couple straps out of a single belt is a huge advantage!! Thanks for your comment and kind words!

Awesome video man thanks for sharing. I have bought a few leather straps in my time and they get very expensive. I will have to experiment with these techniques and create my own custom strap. So much awesome content on your channel, keep up the great work.

Cool video, Thanks! I have zero leather working experience... but could I suggest looking into a pair of what they call 'Hermaphrodite Calipers'. They are used a lot in sheet metal layout, and are specifically designed/intended for marking lines parallel to an existing edge. They come in various sizes, but I think a smaller pair would be ideal for strap work. Check Ebay... one stellar manufacture is 'Starrett', and I think you'd probably be after a pair like their model 243, with an overall length of about 4 1/2".
@NickExposed
@NickExposed 7 жыл бұрын
Oh cool! I'll look into those. So those would be used to mark the cut line? Thanks
@rwbishop
@rwbishop 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 'bent' leg follows the existing edge, and the straight one marks. You may have to come up with your own marking pen/pencil because for sheet metal work they mostly use a sharp scribe to scratch layout dye... or the scribe might be fine. Don't know... never tried them with leather. Good Luck!

I am not at the part of the video where this is relevant yet, but I read this comment and I wanted to mention that you can buy something that does what you're describing (sort of) at a leather store - there's a specific tool called a Strap Cutter which people use to cut belts out of big pieces of hide. A standard one can cost between 30-40 bucks, although they're fairly simple and there are KZbin tutorials on how to make your own, which I imagine would be cheap. Just wanted to mention that before I go back to the video!

FYI, I know this video is 3 years old right now, but never use a metal hammer on a pricking iron (hole punch). It destroys the punch.

Hey Nick, Great video, I'll have to try it out at sometime. I was just thinking that you could add some contact cement (contact glue) to the inside surface of the fold over, clamp it overnight and then punch the holes and do the threading the next day when it is glued. Just a thought. :)

Nice idea, but I'm pretty irked that you're pretending everyone has all of these leatherworking tools and just need to thrift a belt to make this work. $10 is way off so I feel like you didn't deliver. That aside, I like the idea, and will still probably try it out, since I already have leather tools from recently picking it up as a hobby.
