According to actual NASA, they ABSOLUTELY WOULD train expert drillers to go to space rather than training astronauts to become expert drillers. NASA does it all the time, they are called mission specialists. It's significantly easier to training someone to go to space for a singular purpose than it is to train an astronaut to do something entirely outside of their skill set as well as an expert

Yep. Having worked in the oil and gas industry for a number of years, I can most definitely tell you that drilling IS NOT just putting an auger into the ground and letting it go.
@SpanishFly120
@SpanishFly120 12 күн бұрын
That does sort of make sense. However, in that case, you'd have a mixed team, wouldn't you? Like, you'd bring a certain number of specialists along to do the tasks required, but you'd still want to ensure at least half the crew were actual astronauts, as opposed to having most/all of the crew be composed of those specialists, right?

That's why he's a youtube creator, and not a Journalist. A journalist would know the difference of mission specialists, going after that "Texas Sized Astronaut" or NASA taking years to train someone to use unfamiliar equipment in a 0 G environment.

Exactly. Training for working in space is easier than imparting a lifetime of knowledge of every detail of drilling to an astronaut. The drillers are not flying the shuttles or anything. They are passengers. Astronauts are just the pilots getting the experts there. There is no second chance on this.

They. Weren’t. ASTRONAUTS. Ye gods, can we please let this go. They were PASSENGERS. They weren’t expected to pilot the shuttle or do anything astronaut specific. Their “training” was just to survive the trip up and to know how to move in space. That is infinitely less involved and demanding than teaching somebody how to run a rig in near-zero G, dealing with machines you don’t know jack about, encountering metals and other geologic abnormalities. Big, honking, Texas-sized difference.

Gentlemen (and Ladies who don't wear heels often): Running in heels is not nearly as difficult as you believe. Especially if that's all you ever wear. Yep, that "stupid to get pregnant" gets mentioned a lot, but why the hell do people think it was a PLANNED pregnancy, considering the circumstances, and I don't recall the characters discussing it as something they had done deliberately in the movie. Most likely it is meant to be a case of have sex, both are fertile, it happens. Sure there are some systems to make it a bit less likely, at least figuring out the parts of her cycle when she is least likely to be fertile or for him to pull out before ejaculating, but neither is exactly a sure method and it doesn't necessarily help all that much if both are used. It still just happens. Looks like we have gotten way too used to having reliable systems of birth control. And unplanned pregnancies still happen even now, with all those reliable systems available. So, remove those, and there presumably would be a LOT of pregnancies happening no matter how bad the circumstances were otherwise.

"Armageddon" was discussed and answered by drillers and "Texas-sized astronaut"s *twenty-six years ago* when the film came out. Much of the "Texas-sized astronaut" stuff can be pre-programmed and/or handled remotely by others. However, trying to train a "Texas-sized astronaut" the intricacies of how to handle a non-remote/programmable piece of machinery, how deep, where to drill, etc etc... It was much easier to put drillers on a rocket. TWENTY-SIX YEARS and it *still* keeps showing up on dumb people's dumb lists. ffs. EDIT: This-Movie-Exists "Prometheus" *does* deserve to be on every list; at least Ash had the excuse of following his orders to bring back a xenomorph at the expense of the humans' lives, much like HAL did (minus the xeno, for that film).

Somebody didn't watch Armageddon very closely; in the movie they specifically had Bruce Willis address this by saying something like "I've been doing this for decades and still don't know everything." And Bruce explicitly confirmed "you don't need us to do any space-walks or any fancy stuff, just drill a hole" which was confirmed by the NASA leader in the movie... Moreover, drilling in a hellish landscape with unknown/changing conditions is impossible to train vs. training a novice to ride in a spaceship is something NASA does regularly.

On the surface, "A Quiet Place" is a very entertaining thriller, but the note you actually think about it, it seems pretty silly. Deciding to have a baby during an alien invasion in which you must stay quiet is one thing, but are we supposed to believe that people can control what happens as they sleep? No lucid dreams or nightmare that makes you whimper or yell unexpectedly? No unprovoked body functions, such as hiccups, sneezes, coughs, belches, passing gas, or snoring? No yawns? It just becomes more implausible upon further review!

The fact that in a few of these you give perfectly reasonable explanations to why it happened shows that this list should not have been made. Jurassic World: She made a character choice and just because you disagree with it doesn't make it wrong or stupid. Also, she didn't need to run far, she had a headstart, and you can actually see the T-rex closing in when she tosses the flare. So she did not "outrun a T-rex." Quiet Place: Nowhere is it stated that they intentionally had a child. The list even states the possibility of it being an accident then claim it seems to be. So you made an assumption and then called that assumption a stupid decision. Armageddon: Let's ignore the fact that they barely had time and that it wasn't a simple drilling scenario as they would encounter different types of terrain to drill into. Let's also ignore the fact that they were using equipment designed by the guy they hired and could not get it to work when they tried to do it on their own. They did not train them to be astronauts. They simply trained them to handle the conditions they would be working in. There is more to being an astronaut then just flying into space. Face Off: You answered your own question with a clip you used. He was at a hidden medical facility in a coma. The clip you used showed someone put a cigarette on his skin and no response. You don't need a full armed security detail for a man in a coma that no one knows he's there. The bigger issue is how did he wake up in the first place. Prometheus: It's kind of funny that you argue they take their helmets off. We are at the point where technology allows us to go to completely different planets not in our solar system, but can't understand the possibility that our equipment is advanced enough to tell that the atmosphere is safe. They didn't have weapons because they were not a military unit. It was a science unit. But yes, the guy touching the unknown species was a bit stupid. Saying that no one acts like a human reasonably would shows that whoever made this list does not pay attention to how people act in general because there are examples everyday of people doing things that some would consider against common sense. Godzilla King of Monsters: The complaint ignores one major plot point so bad that I question if the writer even watched the movie. The reason the titans were going crazy and being so destructive is because of Ghidorah who is not of this planet. We never got to see how the titans would actually act until Kong vs Godzilla when they talk about them pretty much staying in their own little areas because Ghidorah was making them act a certain way.

Prometheus and Alien Covenant are still stupid, because just because you can breathe, there's still possibility of infection from unknown organisms. In fact, because you can breathe, that possibility becomes more likely. And that's exactly what happens. Characters in these movies behave like idiots because plot must happen.
@draygoon69
@draygoon69 12 күн бұрын
@@ExtremeMadnessX I made a simple point and you came back with an argument that completely misses it. Again, we have the technology to go to different planets in different solar systems, we could easily identify if the environment is safe. Not just breathable but any contaminants known or unknown. The technology would be able to detect things even things of unknown origin. It will point out that there is something it can't identify.
@ExtremeMadnessX
@ExtremeMadnessX 12 күн бұрын
@@draygoon69 That's why, in reality, actual scientists and explorers would wear some kind of protection because of the possibility of unknown dangers. That's why scientists still wear protection while doing research, even in a sterile laboratory.
@draygoon69
@draygoon69 12 күн бұрын
@ExtremeMadnessX it's sad that you have no understanding of how technology works and no grasp of what it would be capable of in a world that is already traveling to other planets in the universe. And the reason scientists still wear protective gear in a sterile environment is so that they don't contaminate it.

*Prometheus* did the crew other than the captain have a psych evaluation first? Like watching a kid stick a fork into a 120 volt outlet. *Makes Mars Attacks look like a documentary* How about a *remake of Capricorn One* but this time *OJ gets left behind* on Mars. He got teased so much about the name Orenthal he threw a fit and took his helmet off.

The annoying thing with out of universe opinions; they are just exactly that. In Armageddon, NASA decided its easier to train drillers to astronaut, rather than sending established astronauts who would have ZERO clue what to do if the drilling hit a _snag_ (lol). In Face/Off, it is _explicitly shown_ that they believed Castor Troy was a vegetable. Since they werent keeping Sean Archer's face alive via having it live on his skull, it would be more of an ethical dilemma as to why they just didnt euthanise Troy. Its like complaining that a film from 2010, set in 1999, has a car model from 2002 in it. Well, that universe had one of *our* celebrities as their American president, so maybe, just _maybe,_ things happened differently in-universe. 🙄 Doylist Vs. Watsonian.

Even worse in Armageddon, the teams were given a day off, instead of sending them into space ASAP and giving them more time to blow up the asteroid instead of scurrying until the last possible second to save the world.

I give 28 Weeks Later a pass for the kiss. The guy was feeling bad for leaving her behind (like a coward) and just wanted that part of his life back. Stupid - yes, but the movie needed that emotional moment to push the story forward. It's still a great sequel.

Not raising the shields in Wrath of Khan may have had a good reason. They could tell there was a problem with the Reliant and its crew, but not what that problem was. If there were need to quickly beam the crew to the Enterprise (for example, if they learned that the ship had been hijacked and the crew were in imminent danger) the shields would have prevented that.

You've left out the absolute worst offense any "SciFi" movie has ever made: The Aliens in Signs, to whom water is toxic, come to invade a planet covered in water for 71% and which for the most part has plenty of moisture in the atmosphere (Pennsylvania, where the movie is set has an average relative humidity level of 54.6%) and for the most part has plenty of rain falling (Pennsylvania has an average yearly rainfall of 41 inches or 1042 millimeters per year). This made the movie totally ludicrous to me. But I guess with M. Night Shamaladingdong's arrogance , I shouldn't expect anything more than lazy script writing. Of course the entirety of Battlefield Earth deserves a close second place, but that movie suffers from the fact that the source material is completely ludicrous crap from Scientology's "Master Mind" himself, L Ron Hubbard.

I hate when astronauts do dumb shit in movies. Real astronauts have trained exhaustively in pretty much every scenario that can happen, so their emotions don't have to take over. There's a real instance when one of the shuttles messed up and the whole crew had to pack into the command module bc there wasn't enough air, and everyone is calm throughout, making their best decisions. There was another time when someone had to manually dock the shuttle at the ISS, and not only did he not freak out or make a dumb decision, he did it perfectly. There's gotta be ways to move your plot forward without making your audience question how your characters got their certifications in the first place

Is there a compilation reel up somewhere of all the times Kirk speaks of his responsibility to his crew? The TWoK decision on this list seems out of character, considering. I don't think GR was a Saint, but fair bet this is something he'd have fixed if it weren't for the drugs and the studio power struggle.
