I bought 11 of these today, the garden center manager wanted them gone, since I agreed to take them all he let me have them for $5 a piece. Woot Woot With the help of a couple neighborhood kids we are going to set up some of them for a few of our elderly neighbors. The helper kids will get one also. Thanks John for pointing these out, I would have likely missed this opportunity to share the joy of gardening.

I looked up my local Lowes and they showed a couple in stock. Stopped by today and finally found them (actually had 3 on the shelf). When I check out, a manager noticed I had the 3 boxes and told the cashier to mark them down to $5 a piece!!! She said they had been on the shelf since Spring and didn't know if the seeds were any good. So I got 3 for $15...nice Christmas present for the kids! Thanks John.

I received my 10 Growums Garden in a box kits today from Lowes. Shipped by truck freight from MO to TX. They arrived on a shrink wrapped pallet in great shape and look brand new. With my 10% off Lowes coupon the price per box came it at 8.99. What a great deal. Thanks for the heads up John.

Thanks so much for posting this. I called my local Lowes which didn't have any growums. They then did a nation wide search. The only lowes tha had growums was in Ohio. The customer service rep was nice enough to have 4 Growums shipped to my house for 1c shipping. By far the best customer service experience with any home supply company.

John, I went to 7 different Lowe's to buy them out of what they had back then, and all of them are still in use 4 years later. Half of them are no longer self-watering due to cracks, but they still work great as standard containers. When you look at Google Satellite of our yard, it looks very purplish where our 18 Growums are. All I do is add compost and a rock dust to it after every harvest. Thanks so much for this one. It is actually how I first discovered you around Xmas of 2012.

John, I love your videos, especially the longer ones. I'll watch them in the evening or while duplicating a gardening suggestion. This is a great lesson on thinking outside of the Grow-Box :D and how to get better gardening products at a lower price. I've used your garden soil recipe and it works great! Good drainage, good water retention and it's enabled me to have living plants in August in Dallas when my neighbor is struggling to keep his plants watered. I garden in containers on my patio. Thank you!

I have used and built some of these types of grow boxes, I have found that the ones I used compost in started smelling like rotten eggs, found out that the compost was decomposing and since it was wet all the time started to rot. We changed to 1/3 Coir, 1/3 Vermiculite and 1/3 Perlite. Then we used a grove between the plants and placed organic 10-10-10 fertilizer, the wicking action of the coir will desolve the fertilizer and carry it to the roots. We had at one time 20 boxes growing tomatoes

John I really like your shows.Just want to add a note on compost. basically there are two different types. The stuff you like to use ( sifted ) is the garden variety and the really lumpy/chunky stuff is known as forestry compost. It's NOT recommended in raised beds. It is used in situations where the soil has a lot of clay , needs to be broken up and you need to deep til.

Went to Lowe's online and ordered the quantity available, and picked up in the stores. One store called me right away to say they didn't have them, but since I've done a lot of business with Lowe's, I knew their website shows the quantities in stock. After 18 minutes on hold, I called back and got the manager who located a palet on the two shelf. My point is, if their online shows them, they should have some. I ended up getting 11 of them.

I got 12 of them, had to go to 2 stores. I ordered mine on line then I picked them up in the store. When you order on-line they pull them and have them ready. Good thing for me, both stores did NOT have them on the shelf. They were on a pallet on the storage rack. still thinking about a trip to another Lowes to get 4 more. Great deal thanks for the info!

Didn't have good luck with it last year. Since the water drains down, which is where the plant is growing out of, the roots weren't getting the water they needed. However, adding the coconut coir may help retain the water throughout. Think I'll try that this year.

I went to my local Lowe's today. The store removed them from the shelf and shipped them somewhere only yesterday! They were 9.99 a piece. I went on line and found the number for Lowe's catalogue order center. They tracked down 6 for me. The shipping for six costs $75! So I ordered four, which is within my budget. There are some left as of April 12, 2013 if anyone is interested, although you'll be paying about $23 per box. Looking forward to using these for a hydroponic system.

A: Yes Q: Are the white watering pipes made of PVC? A: No. Polypropylene

If you have watched my videos, I always recommend growing in the most natural containers, ie: I prefer wood or stone over plastic. That being said, if the choice is grow your own organic produce in rock dust and high nutrient dense soil in a plastic grow container or purchase conventional produce that is shipped in on average 1500 miles. I chose growing my own organically in plastic. That being said, I always encourage everyone to do the BEST they can. $10 gets them growing. Im for it.

I usually enjoy your videos and appreciate you sharing your knowledge and "finds" with us. Having seen this video as soon as you posted it, I was most disappointed to find that you had cleaned out the Bay Area. None to be had except one in South San. And to add insult to injury, you post this video with a WALL of them behind you. Nice. Good luck to those who live far from here, you may have a chance to score some of these. But anyone within a 50mi radius, can probably call this "find" DOA.

No, I have made my own grow boxes before and grew tomatoes in them just fine. I grew medium sized tomatoes and cherry types, both did great. I do recommend putting in some sort of calcium supplement into the soil or water though. I got Blossom End Rot on mine once which I found out was caused by lack of calcium. As soon as I put some into the water supply, my new tomatoes were fine in 2 weeks time. The ones with the rot were doomed though, so pluck those off if you get them, put in compost pile.

After seeing this video I went to my local Lowes to see if by chance they had any. They didn't but while there I asked them to check on the computer as to whether the other stores in the area had any in stock. There were some at another store close by. They had six but said I should come by to pick through them because some had weather damage. When I asked about the water damage ones they said I could get any of them for half price and so nded up paying $4.99 each. Thanks for the heads up.

A good suggestion for making "Mel's Mix" is to have somethings like 4-5 sources of compost or organic material in the mix instead of just compost. For example, for the organic component of the mix you can use: 1) regular compost, 2) worm castings. 3) mushroom compost, 4) forest hummus, etc. This will give you a diverse bacterial community for healthy plant growth.

Plant the seeds very thickly and then thin them as the weeks pass. At even 2" apart look at all of that soil surface just sitting there until way later. Radishes: you can eat the entire plant at every stage in its growth. I bet a jar of sauer baby radishes would be delicious.

The alternative is to buy an Earthbox directly online, they are more expensive than growums but UV protected and last basically forever especially if you shield them with jute/coffee bag cloth. If you buy 5 or 10, they are much cheaper.

John Thank you for the Growums info. I had to open a case with Lowes corporate sales to find them. They located 10 for me in a MO store. I should get them this week. With a large greenhouse and several hundred container gardens I'm always looking to try new things. Have you seen the self watering rain gutters and kiddie pool sub-irrigated planters created by Larry Hall. Seach it up on KZbin. They both work great and are very low maintenance with float valves. From south Texas many thanks.

We'd give up and were about to order online as you suggested until I found and went to my local hydroponics store, Worm's Way. They have it in many different amounts and mixes. You are correct about the local gardening stores not carrying Azomite. Can you give me information on a vendor that won't eat my lunch with shipping charges. I watched one video where you purchased 44 lbs at a local store for under $25, but I'm seeing online prices of around $76 dollars. We don't even have a hydroponics store, or any organic gardening products readily available. If there were enough organic gardeners around here to support one, I'd consider opening one.

Hi John -- I love your videos and the length of them as well. I grow with Earth boxes and I recently made some self watering containers out of two food-grade buckets. It appears that you use Mel's mix with no added fertilizer for your earthboxes. Do you use the plastic mulch cover? By the way, Earthboxes are made in United States out of food-grade plastic.

I know that John will probably never read this so perhaps any of the subscribers would like to comment on the following question: I purchased an Earthbox like the one in this video and I'm curious to how "safe" it is to use plant starters from big box stores like Lowe's, etc. I plan on planting edible plants like herbs, greens, etc which obviously I will be ingesting. Any concern on eating these plants that are most likely non-organic? Thanks in advance...
