We used to live in the Burbank area of California and growing vegetables was pretty easy. Now that we moved to Vegas area, I’ve discovered you need to really pay attention to soil, seasons, watering, and wind. I didn’t have much luck with tomatoes either. I think that if I planted the seeds early and indoors, I would have had more fruit before the summer heat took its toll.

Here's my mom's recipe for Italian pickled eggplant: Ingredients 1 large eggplant (or as many as you like) Water Apple cider vinegar 1 or 2 garlic cloves, sliced (or as per your taste) Dried oregano (as per your taste) Organic extra-virgin olive oil Instructions Peel eggplant and slice into ½ cm (¼ inch) rounds. Rinse eggplant in filtered water, then place in a bowl with 2 parts water and 1 part vinegar. Leave for 3-4 hours. Drain water from bowl and squeeze the eggplant by hand to remove as much water as possible. Then squeeze again, really well, with a cloth kitchen towel (not microfibre). (It is really important to squeeze out as much water as possible, or the eggplant will go bad after jarring.) Place squeezed eggplant into a clean, dry bowl. Add the sliced garlic and sprinkle with as much oregano as you like - don’t overdo it as it may taste bitter. Mix well. Place eggplant into sterilised jars and top with olive oil. Ensure the eggplant is fully submerged. If you see bubbles starting to form after jarring, this means there was too much water left in the eggplant and was not squeezed well enough. The eggplant needs to be discarded.

I am near Joshua Tree. We get friends and neighbors to save leaves for us each fall and use leaves layered with chicken manure to make excellent soil in a few months. Gotta either have chickens or know someone who does. You can use cow, goat and other animal manure. Horse is problematic because of all the grass seeds in it that will take over your garden.

We moved to Vegas in April. I didn’t have time to get a garden in...probably a good thing. After experiencing the intense summer heat and reading gardening books and watching KZbin videos, I am going to only plant from late September through mid June. I’ll do cover crops in the summer...buckwheat does well in the heat. Certain tomato plant varieties can be harvested in 60 days, so if they’re in the ground by mid April they should be fine. That way, I can travel in the summer (to a cooler place) and not have to be worried about the status of my garden.

@Gradechecker12 жыл бұрын
Zucchini, peppers, cucumber. Watermelon. Cantaloupe. Sweet potatoes. You didn't ask me, but I am container growing these vegetables out in the middle of BFE. You will need shade, at least 50% and more like 70% is better. You also need to make sure it's sheltered from the hot, blowtorch winds. Learning as planting, pay attention to what is already commercially grown, down near Niland, El Centro... and if you get time, read up on Aeroponic Tower Gardening. 90% less water, and can be watered with solar setup, 12v battery. I also check gardening tips from Arizona too. Good luck!
