Definitely pick through the tail and mane with your hands before brushing and add plenty of detangle spray But whenever you brush out the hair, ALWAYS start at the bottom and work your way up slowly.Whenever you are brushing through a knot, you are pulling out a ton of hairs. If you run into a knot, pull it apart with your fingers until you an brush it though from the bottom.

Also you can use a metal curry comb or shedding brush to clean out the body brush. Works so well!

Instead of leave in conditioner for brushing your horses tail, you can use a solution of listerine (store brands work just as well) and baby oil. It helps to get rid of dandruff in their tails as well as conditioning them. Always works wonders on my horses tails.

do you mean the mouth wash listerine?
@Danceswithbees3 жыл бұрын
@@imba.hjaltalin yes. Although i usually opt for the yellow store brand ones from walmart or target (much cheaper than listerine with the same effect) The mouth wash is to help with dandruff and cleaning the hair and the baby oil is to help with conditioning it. So you can kind of change the proportions based on what you think your horse needs more of. My horse gets a very dandruffy tail so i put about 60-40 mouth wash to baby oil to help get rid of the dandruff. It doesnt take much baby oil to get the tail looking really nice and shiny and conditioned

I have my own life hack that my whole family uses on all 5 of our horses, and even passed on to my lesson barn because it's cheap and works great! For thrush prevention, just buy a large bottle of listerine, the mint kind, and put it in a spray bottle. Then you just spray it on the hoof, but make sure it gets in all the little nooks and crannies. You can leave it as is in the bottle, or dilute it with a little water. It works wonders for thrush prevention!
@Oregonracer23 жыл бұрын
I use those disposable women's face and eyebrow razors to scrape off bot eggs. When they get dull for me, the go to the barn. I am telling you this is the best ever! One pass and they are gone! You can use a new one, but use a lighter hand because it might take a little hair with it. It will not cut skin though. I like the not too sharp, not too dull. If I don't have any in that category I will happily use the sharp ones. Schick makes my favorite, I get them from Amazon. While we are talking, these are the best to get the peach fuzz off your face and exfoliate. Makeup, Moisturizer and sunscreen all work better on a smooth face. Happy scraping!

Best thing to keep tails long and thick is tail bags/boots/wraps. My horses live in braid in tail wraps or tail boots. Tail is braided and protected so it isn't getting tangles and ripped out. You don't have to take them out to practice. I only rebraid every 1-2 weeks. The tail wraps i buy (cactus tails) says that you can go longer in between. And then ditch the rubber bands and use black electrical tape. Way less damaging to the hair. Pretty much, my routine will all of my horses has been to redo the braids in the mane and tail once a week or every other week. I finish off the braids with electrical tape (biomane has a great video on this). And I put the tail back in its wrap or boot. And it seriously does wonders. Without changing her diet at all, I took a mare that wouldn't grow her tail past her hocks to almost 6 inches longer (in about 5 months). And the short hairs in her mane are growing out, making her mane start to look pretty thick. I am going to put her on biomane here in the next month or so and see if I can get it to grow out a little faster.

Coloring saddle balm looks really cool. I definitely must try it :D I'm always so sad when I get a new black saddle and suddenly it have brown spots on sides. You can't see it when I'm riding but I feel ashamed when I saddle my horse along side professionals with nice new tack from sponsors (when we meet on some occasions) It look so cheap in comparison, despite the fact I take good care of every piece of equipment and everything is only year or few years old. That thing with lifting legs good, I had good teacher, so I new this thing when I was learning how to take care about horses. I always laugh at people who grab the pastern and are trying to lift that foot with force :D :D Last one with tail brushing I do differently. I brush mane and tail same way I do my hair. First I spray it (if your horse hate sprays you can use old shampoo bottle to splash it without sound) with herbal "tea" made from wallnut tree leaves (they are good for dark mane and also it repell flies), mint, nettle or chamomile (better for light mane): all extracts contain oils so there can be oil floating on the surface... or I use bought conditioner. Then I grab lowest third of the tail and brush ends, after that I grab tail higher and brush lower 2/3 of the tail and then I brush the top and whole tail again. With this technique you don't pull so many hair out. If you use "tea" spray every day you can see your horse's mane is more shiny and it will grow longer (it's like fertiliser for hair :D). Also you always make a new batch of spray everyday. I also use it on horse's coat. it makes their fur shiny and it's like deodorant so they will not smell and flies will not bother them so much.
