Very unfair to put the F2005 car in here. This car without the tyre change regulation change would’ve been unbeatable. The problem is Ferrari designed this car to be with incredibly fast with try changes during the race. But the regulation change came too late for Ferrari or Bridgestone to do anything about it. This tyre change ban was what gifted Renault+Michelin the title that year.

yep, the 2010 W01 was still racked some good result. only in the half closing season they're in slump. the huge disappointments came from W02 & W03. W02 Mercedes claimed it could compete with Red Bull or Mclaren, but it didn't step up anyway. and wasn't even a podium challenger unlike it's predecessor despite Schumacher's best run in Canada or Rosberg's in China. W03, they innovated "Double DRS" (IIRC the name, the effect was like F-duct) which caused protest by Red Bull & Lotus. first part of the season they achieved a very good & promising pace (despite Schumi's unlucky). after Valencia it's a huge downhill to a midpack runner.

There are plenty of other disappointing F1 designs to make more top 10's. McLaren MP4-28 (2013): having finished the 2012 season with the fastest car, despite losing Lewis Hamilton to Mercedes, hopes were high for McLaren to fight for the championship having had finger trouble time and time again in 2012. Instead, the team inexplicably threw caution to the wind in the car design. They completely changed the philosophy of the car design, having pullrod suspension all-round, adversely affecting the feel of the car for the drivers. The result was that neither Jenson Button nor his team mate for the year Sergio Perez could score podiums, let alone wins and a title challenge. They dropped from 3rd in the constructors championship in 2012 to 5th in 2013. Ferrari F60 (2009): having won the constructors title the previous 2 years and the driver's title in 2007, Ferrari would be forgiven for thinking that they would be right up there again in 2009. Instead, the revolutionary changes to the aerodynamics threw them a curve ball. Not only was the car one of the many to fail to exploit the double diffuser loophole that Brawn picked up on, but the installation of KERS lead to some interesting handling characteristics. The motor-generator unit and energy store was located beneath the F60's fuel tank, which on paper was good because it kept the mass of it low down. However, when race fuel was added, it raised the centre of gravity, making the car unpredictable to drive. In addition, the car looked very basic compared to other teams, with little development taking place and the results showed it. The team fell from champions in the constructors championship with 172 points in 2008 to 4th in the constructors championship in 2009 with just 70 points. The drivability problems truly reared its head after Massa was badly injured in qualifying in Hungary when a heave spring from Barrichello's Brawn hit him on the head. Neither of the drivers hired to substitute for Massa, Luca Badoer and Giancarlo Fisichella, could cope with the handling of the F60, with both of them really struggling. Badoer had the dubious honour of being the only Ferrari driver to qualify last on pure pace for Grands Prix and Fisichella, despite having a feel for cars built to 2009 regulations and having a podium finish at Spa for Force India, he could barely coax the F60 to the top 10 in qualifying and by the end of the season he was also qualifying last on pace. The car was fortunate to record one win in the hands of Raikkonen at Spa Ferrari F14T (2014): after falling short of the title every year in their partnership with Fernando Alonso, with the exception of 2011 where they were nowhere near capable of mounting a sustained title challenge, it was championship challenge or bust for Ferrari in their hopes of ending their championship drought. It was bust as it turned out. The first Ferrari designed around the current generation of full hybrid power units, the F14T was a big disappointment. Although they weren't alone in failing to properly do their homework in how to get the best out of the V6 turbo hybrids as Mercedes, indeed Renault were initially worse and Honda were even worse a year later, but Ferrari's was by the midpoint of 2014 the weakest power unit on the grid. Coupled with a vacuum cleaner nose, designed to meet the lower front crash structure mandated by the FIA, the car also looked really odd. Not even having a second former world champion drive the second car, Kimi Raikkonen, could help them as they suffered their worst season since 1980. From 3rd in the constructors championship in 2013 with 354 points (scoring 2 wins) to 4th in the constructors championship in 2014 with 216 points and only 2 podium finishes all year. This car contributed to Alonso running out of patience with Ferrari and leaving for (ultimately an even worse time) McLaren

The MCL33 should have been on here instead of the MP4/30. The 30 came about at a time when McLaren were starting to go downhill and already had a mediocre 2014, even with the best engine on the grid. Gerhard Berger would disagree with your assessment of the B196. He drove Schumi's B195 car late in 1995 after he'd signed with Benetton for '96, and said the car's handling was poor, and that when he drove it, he knew Schumacher was a great driver, because the B195 was not a car that anyone should be expected to win a title in. Remember, Berger knew what a championship car should be like; he drove two as Senna's teammate with McLaren. He wrote about all of this in his autobiography. The car did improve throughout the year, in Brazil they finished 4th and 6th, but yes it a massive step down from 2012. 2014 was also bad Considering they had the best engine by a mile. They scored more points than 2013 but they should have been title challengers with that Mercedes engine.

Personally the drivers weren't good enough for Benetton in 1996. Schumacher would've won the title if he stayed there. You only need to see his performance for Ferrari in a car that was worse than the Benetton. He won 3 races in it

Replace the W01 with the SF90. Ferrari said they were 0.5 sec faster than Mercedes, but when it came to the 1st race, they were 0.7 sec slower than the Merc. If u do the math, they were 1.2 seconds slower than expected.

I would add BMW F1.09. They abadoned the development of previous car early when they had a achange to snatch a title with Kubica to focus on 2009 challenger. Yet, the car was non-consistent in performance and early semmingly good pace at Melbourne by Kubica was only a start with laughter that ended in tears.

Missing: Jordan 192. After a first year in F1 with the beautiful and quick 191 Jordan slipped from a stunning 5th on their debut to a terrible 1992 where they only scored one point. At the Italian GP the 192 only managed to qualify because Senna gave his countryman and friend Gugelmin a tow down the main straight as the 192 lacked the power to out perform such luminaries as the Larrousse, Fondmetal or Minardi cars (Modena in the sister car finished nearly a second adrift of Gugelmin in qualification). The team scored their only point of the season in the last race at Australia mostly due to luck, overall the 192 managed 9 finishes out of a possible 32 and signed the death knell for both its drivers as neither Modena and Gugelmin drove in F1 again. The reason for this abysmal performance was the Yamaha engine which while free was about as much use as chocolate tyres.

The reason the 1996 Benetton was such a disappointment was that it had been developed around Schumacher's driving style. Both Alesi and Berger didn't like the car's lose end and found it impossible to set up to their liking. The car was also unreliable and retired from 8 out of 16 races compared to 2 out of 17 races in 1995. Most notably Alesi retired from the Monaco GP while leading and Berger while leading the German GP with three more laps to go. Then there was this "small issue" that more and more Benetton technicians followed Schumacher to Ferrari leaving Benetton to fill in their gaps by promoting their own. Last but not least Briatore's relationship with Alesi deteriorated during the season leaving Alesi without any support.

Merc were not aiming for a Championship during the V8 era, they were more focused on their V6 engine development from 2010-2013. 2013 shows that they even without the V6, they are extremely competitive and managed to beat Ferrari. Could they have challenged for the title during those years? They definetly could have, but it would be much harder than waiting for 2014 to just come along.

Dishonorable mention, Brabham BT53/BMW: The follow up the championship winning (and iconic) BT52 was never it's equal. The BT53 did win two races in 1984 but that was only when it wasn't busy not finishing half the races it entered. Lotus 80-ford: Not even close to the previous years classic the full wing car 80 introduced F1 to the world of porpoising. A classic example of just because you can doesn't mean you should it was replaced mid year by the by then out dated 79 until it's problems could be ironed out. In fact it was so bad Carlos Reutemann decided to continue with the 79 for the rest of the season.

That would be the Lotus 72. The team thought they would be able to run a new chassis but performance was dreadful so they had drag the old car out and modify it for new regulations. Emerson Fittipaldi won the title with it. That will never happen again with the rate technology keeps changing these days.

Anyone who thought the MP4/30 was going to be fast must have put their faith in Honda or late 1980's magic because the MP4/29 was embarrassingly bad. McLaren was the 3rd best out of 4 Mercedes powered teams in 2014, and AMG power was the best power unit at the start of the turbo hybrid era. Mercedes' namesake team outscored McLaren almost 4:1, Williams almost doubled McLaren's points, and McLaren only outscored the underfunded Force India team as far as teams with Merc power. After the Aussie GP, where McLaren finished 2nd and 3rd, there were no more podiums for the MP4/29 drivers. Valtteri Bottas, by himslef, in a Williams-MB outscored both McLaren-MB drivers combined in 2014. 2014 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who left McLaren just two years previous, scored more than double the points that McLaren put up in 2014. So why so much optimism going into 2015 after two years of subpar cars? I think most observers would have a hard time calling any 2013-2018 McLaren chassis a good, much less great, chassis.
@zeroelus4 жыл бұрын
Yep, I remember thinking exactly that during the build up when they insisted on stirring up memories of championship winning McHondas, when the Mclaren with the best PU in the grid was fairly anonymous, and I was also quite irritated at their management, touting two "new these are the future talents and we'll develop them" (Checo and Magnussen) only to toss them aside fairly quickly without really helping them develop, but hey another sign that their management allowed a problem to create and fester. Shame how the relationship ended, but at least Honda now has a very competitive power unit and partner, and Mclaren look like they are getting back into decent shape.

2017 chassis was much better than the 2018 one tho
@mrdraw20874 жыл бұрын
True, the 2013 and especially the 2014 chassis were terrible. Then do away with the car's only strong point (the engine) and you're in for disaster, which was exactly what happened. To be fair, McLaren started producing decent chassis during their Honda years. The 2018 chassis was awful, but the 2019 chassis was quite alright, considering they still had a slight engine disadvantage.
