10 Facts About Our Planet You Didn't Learn In School

We seem to think we know pretty much all there is to know about our Earth that nothing can surprise us at this point. You’ll be amazed when you find out how much you have yet to learn about our home planet: let’s start with 10 little-known earthly facts. You might know that it’s called “the blue planet”, but did you know that scientists say Earth was originally a different color? Or that the Moon isn’t Earth’s only satellite?
The magnetic field is vital for Earth because it protects the planet from the impact of solar winds. We think of our planet’s magnetic field as something constant and stable, but the truth is that it’s changing. James Ross, an explorer and British naval officer, pinpointed the northern magnetic pole for the first time in 1831. In 1904, Roald Amundsen, a polar regions explorer from Norway, reached the north magnetic pole again and was surprised to find that it had shifted 31 miles since Ross's discovery.
Earth, despite common belief, isn't perfectly round. It’s more like a squashed sphere. So its mass is irregular and differs in various places, which causes “wobbles” of gravity in different areas of the planet.
A smaller celestial body about 750 miles wide orbited Earth like a second moon. It most likely crashed into our main satellite later on. Scientists also don't rule out the probability that one day Earth will get another satellite.
If all the gold found inside the Earth could be extracted, it would be enough to cover the entire surface of the planet in a 2-foot layer of gold. And if we gave everyone an equal piece, each one of Earth’s inhabitants would get 9 pounds of this treasure.
Magma lurking below the surface of crater lakes emits carbon dioxide into the waters of the lakes. This carbon dioxide builds up in a thick layer at the bottom of the lakes until pressure gives way, and it’s released in an explosion.

SUMMARY
-About 4 billion years ago, a gigantic space rock the size of Mars collided with our planet. As a result, a huge chunk of the Earth broke away and later became our satellite, the Moon.
-Researchers say that since the 19th century, the northern magnetic pole has shifted about 685 miles, moving northwestward across the Canadian Arctic.
-One of the gravitational anomalies is found in Canada’s Hudson Bay, where gravity is much weaker than anywhere else on the planet.
-Some scientists believe that our planet used to have an additional satellite that crashed into our main satellite later on.
-Earthquakes on the Moon are much deeper and closer to the center of our satellite, about halfway between the surface and the core.
-About 20 million tons of gold can be found inside our very own planet and in the seas.
-Dr. Shil DasSarma, a microbial geneticist from the University of Maryland, thinks that ancient microbes probably didn’t use chlorophyll but other molecules to process sunlight and our planet used to be purple.
-If measured from the very bottom on the ocean floor to the peak, Mauna Kea is 33,000 feet tall, making it, technically, the tallest mountain on the planet.
-Nyos, Monoun, and Kivu are crater lakes in Africa that are located over volcanic earth.
-The most powerful eruption ever recorded happened in April 1815 in Indonesia. It was ranked a 7 (or “super-colossal”) on the Volcanic Explosivity Index.

I am surprised people are commenting on how some of the facts are questionable but no one sees anything wrong with the golden Earth calculation so I'll break it down for you: 20 000 000 tons = 2 e+10 kg density of gold = 19300 kg/m3 => volume of all gold = 1.04 e+6 m3 surface area of the earth = 5.12 e+14 m2 Dividing volume by surface area = 2.02 e-9 m = 2 nm (nanometer) thick layer surrounding the Earth (you might barely see the change in refractive index when deposited on glass but otherwise you will not even see it) The value of 2 feet that is mentioned is over 300 million times larger than the correctly calculated value!

The explosion of Mount Tambora (in conjunction with several other volcanic events in the preceding three years) was so bad that the following year, 1816, was called "The Year Without A Summer." There were calamitous crop failures across the globe. Brown snow and red snow were observed in Hungary and Italy. A persistent dry fog was described in scientific journals. Snow fell in the Northern US in June, and river and lake ice were observed in August.

The gravity anomaly in the Hudson Bay region of Canada is probably around 0.005% If it was 25-45%, some people would be able to jump twice as high or throw twice as far or carry twice as much when visiting that area. Maybe the author misread "the ice sheet theory only accounts for 25 percent to 45 percent of the gravitational variation around Hudson Bay"

Their claim that an area i Canada has 25-45% weaker gravity compared to the average on earth is the most serious misinformation I've heard in a while. How could anyone on the team not hear that during the production of the video and think "Wait a minute". If none on the team thought to themselves that this percentage seemed insanely inaccurate, I do not trust they have any scientific grasp of what they put out at all. Spread of misinformation like this is not okay and if they have any integrity, they should be far more careful and awake during production.

11. The Earth crust has a variable density and thickness -- the seafloor is the thinnest, densest ...mountainous ranges are the thickest, lightest ...the Earth's crust also bends and moves based on the Earth average temperature... When the Earth is cool and there is glaciers on land the surface crust is less likely to bend or move ... when the Earth is hot and the glaciers and ice cap has melted then there is more water in the oceans and the seafloor bends under the weight of the extra sea water ... when the surface crust bends or deforms it puts extra pressure on the mantle and this extra pressure increase Earth plate tectonics movements..... the end result will be greater volcanic/basalt activiity

The moon being a chunk of the earth is just a theory. Actually the molecular composition of the moon isn't anything like any place on earth. So it's most likely not part of the old earth. There are many legends around the whole earth that the moon was set into a trajectory around the planet by advanced beings, it may not sound likely, but seeing the evidence it's more plausible than the collision theory.
@sciencetroll6304
@sciencetroll6304 5 жыл бұрын
The way both the Solar and Lunar eclipses work is to me God putting his signature on his work. Substitute advanced beings if you like, but it's still the same thing, you'd have to be brainwashed by science to believe that's all set up the way it is by coincidence.
@neilcognito
@neilcognito 5 жыл бұрын
Mike van Wijngaarden I'm not a theoretical person, so many comments like these go over my head, but I have one question, don't every planet has at least 1 moon? So, the collion thing already makes no sense, and likewise, since the moon affects many parts of the atmosphere and earth itsel, it would mean that Moons are apart of planets functionalities eh?
@hellevorst
@hellevorst 5 жыл бұрын
Not every planet has a moon, some planets have 0, some even have 100 or more. Our moon is very close to our planet, and it's so big that it stabilizes the rotation of our planet, that is the reason we have day and night, otherwise, we would rotate all ways, and we would not have a steady day and night rhythm. Our moon might be the reason life on earth is so rich and even possible.
@neilcognito
@neilcognito 5 жыл бұрын
Mike van Wijngaarden I mean, Mercury and Venus are inhabitable so do they even count? But you're right, they don't have moons. and with everything else - exactly, and that's why we can both agree, collision theory is nonsense. The moon serves way too much purpose to just be a coincidence.
@hellevorst
@hellevorst 5 жыл бұрын
Basically if a planet is habitable or not doesn't affect it's planet status, it's size does. But yeah we can agree, the collision theory isn't very likely at all. I just wish we knew what the real origin of our moon is, it's an interesting moon, since it's very big for a moon and because it's so close to the earth and in a cyclical orbit, so the orbit has a 1 day cycle before it's rotated around us. Thanks for the chat. You should check out some documentary about the moon, like: what's inside the moon.
