Adding to the lightning one: if you’re about to open an egress door in a thunderstorm and the knob is staticky, remove your hand. While it’s rare for anything serious to actually happen, that does mean the lighting is starting to touch down closer. Which should tell you to move away from windows, at the very least.

Actually the “house smelling like fish” is true. My mom and I were smelling fish around the house for a few weeks, but all the sudden my mom got this flash to check on of the plug to our fireplace and we found that it was shooting sparks and the white bit around it was black. So it saved us.
