That one I always find so crazy! One of my professors studies how sea anemones likes to ingest plastic pieces and spit them out over and over again until they lose their “flavor” almost like chewing gum (which is also technically plastic) 🙃😬 he’s still working on publishing that but I will share when it comes out! Thank you for watching and hope to see you in the comments for the future videos. 😊

Can you add some info about currently available filtering set ups to remove microplastics? and forever chemicals? I have been doing some research and it is hard to find clear statements.

Thank you! I love this. There are so many questions about micro and nano sized plastic that still need research. I appreciate that you call that out. I often see obvious plastic fibers in plankton samples but it’s hard to know if they came from my net, my clothing, or if they have been floating in the ocean for a decade. Keep up the wonderful work.

Source tracing and identification is always the most difficult in this field. Once we have improvement in the technology, I think it will get a lot easier. Nanoplastics is almost another research topic in a way! 😊Thanks for the support and watching this video!

I honestly had no clue about it either until I started my PhD on this topic! We really don’t talk about this issue enough and perhaps it’s because the field of research is still pretty new. But thank you so much for watching and learning a little bit about what I am so passionate about.

Biodegradable plastics are a great alternative since they decompose faster in our environment. The scary part about them is that they also have chemicals. The world of plastics is tricky.

The fact that surprised me the most is that micro-plastics can make their way thorough generations, and even species.
@imariwalker4 жыл бұрын
That one is the scariest for me because we still have so much research to do tracking these microplastics across generations and through predator prey relationship.

Agree with Imari. We need to vote with our dollar and our ballot. We must work together to get private industry to switch buy demanding less use of plastic. We need to also demand the government implement more regulations on plastic. We need to fund more research in material science to develop more sustainability and practical options. Also, we need to invest in the use of other materials👌

Stephanie G Absolutely! It’s easy to recommend that we as a consumer change our habits but I think the larger responsibility should be on companies to make these large scale changes.

Louisiana, Florida, etc. get hurricane seasons which basically get the ocean trash thrown at them and become a whilwind of garbage once per year for hurricane season! Yay!
@imariwalker3 жыл бұрын
That’s wild! I’m sure those hurricanes are unintentionally taking some trash from folks yards and destroyed homes as well out to see. It’s a pretty harmful cycle for debris.

I think awareness is key, only so can the market slowly change and innovative companies can still survive and adapt. Without going under because of drastic changes or imposed rules. I just hope that such a natural market progression will be fast enough. The best way to speed it up is to inform people!! So great video! Will share Can we find scientific research of your own group on Web of Science? I'd like to read more.

I agree completely! Thank you for watching and sharing. I’m currently in the middle of finishing my doctoral dissertation so I will be publishing my research over the next year or so. Y don't we just ban plastics? We do have corn plastics available.
@imariwalker4 жыл бұрын
Banning plastics is not an simple not easy thing to do. There are still a lot of things we need plastic for like medical items. We do need to work to eliminate consumer based single use plastic. Also we can’t switch everything to corn based plastic and here is why: 4 Facts You Need To Know About Bioplastics & Biodegradable Plastics kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5SYo4mDfJ2Updk
@stormiestcloud3 жыл бұрын
I think since we cannot stop microplastic, we should stop making it and stash the already created plastic into huge metal buildings somewhere where it doesnt get too hot (so it doesnt melt) to prevent it from abrasion/breaking down by natural winds or rains which creates more nano/microplastic .
@imariwalker3 жыл бұрын
It’s a great idea but a bit difficult because of the vast quantities already out in the environment and in production. We don’t really even do a good job separating the plastic from the rest of the waste.
