The real reason people hated the episode Karate Island was because in November 2006, Nickelodeon aired a 24 hour marathon of the top 100 best spongebob episodes. However this marathon ended up being controversial as most of the best episodes on the list were mostly from season 4 while fan favourite episodes were either low on the list or not there at all. The number 1 winner on the top 100 24 hour marathon was revealed to be Karate Island. This is what caused people to hate this episode. I think Karate Island is a good episode but its definitely not the best ever episode of spongebob. That would be would Band Geeks!

I don’t get why people hate on "Are you Happy Now" so much. It’s a pretty good depiction of depression for a kids show. A lot of the hate probably comes from the Squidward sewer slide jokes but as somebody that enjoys dark humor it never bothered me

I think the original suicide attempt jokes in Are You Happy Now could be an attempt to educate kids on suicidal ideation. But it came off as callous jokes because Spongebob Squarepants simply isn't the right show to speak on that topic. It's too cheery and it's target demographic is too young. But it made me think. I glanced at the scars on my arms while watching that segment of this video and thought: How could such dark, heartbreaking topics as depression and suicide be introduced and explained to children in a healthy, nontraumatic way?

I’m surprised that there are kids books out there now that deal with the topic of trauma. There’s one about a dragon named Diggory Doo that goes through a traumatic event and it’s actually very well written. Would’ve loved the Diggory Doo series as a kid since I love dragons.

I think it's an interesting angle to consider that some of those half-hearted, seemingly hyperbolic and unserious comments have some truth to them. That's probably why Red Mist fascinates people.

Thank you for that Are You Happy Now defense. It's such a misunderstood gem that deserves so much better. It's probably the most realistic SpongeBob episode I have ever seen with the way it tackles themes of depression and I love how things take a turn with SpongeBob actually being compassionate to Squidward. It's one of the deepest, most mature, and most profound SpongeBob episodes. I'm gonna go as far as saying it's the best post-movie SpongeBob episode (specifically out of all the episodes from seasons 5-9). And yes, I prefer it over Sandcastles in the Sand unpopular opinion.

Spongehenge is genuinely one of my favorite episodes... I didn't find it to be mean-spirited at all (unfortunate for most characters involved yes, but not mean-spirited) and I feel like there was a lot of bizarre and cryptic stuff happening in this episode that was meaningful enough to actually have made me think a little about it, which is something that Spongebob rarely accomplishes tbh. I also thought it was intruguing how the storm just seems like an omen of a major catastrophe, like the moon from Majora's Mask getting closer, yet Spongebob turns it into a pleasant melody even if it doesn't prevent anything. Just really creative and unique overall and different from the usual tone of the series. And to add to your statistics, as someone on the spectrum I also find myself often afraid of the dark, sometimes waking up and feeling the urge to turn on the lights, so I guess I might give Night Light a watch.

I agree with your take on the Night Light episode. I too am on the spectrum (Asperger's in my case), and was terrified of the dark for a good many years (mainly due to the movie Poltergeist) until I got older. I also like House Fancy, Wormy, Krabby Kronicle, Karate Island, Squeaky Boots. Also, Ed, Edd 'n Eddy is my number 1 favorite cartoon to this day!

What I hate about “karate island” is continuity error. Said error is spongebob not knowing how to fight back, but the previous episode “karate choppers” shows how much of a good fighter he is. Sure Sandy rescuing him is a good scene, but it still would’ve been great to see spongebob break free from his restraints and fight udon alongside Sandy.

As much as I enjoy watching videos containing heavy topics, I always get scared of the dark afterwards. “Night Light” was so funny and relatable. “Are You Happy Now?” really spoke to me. As someone who suffers from depression, this episode makes me feel seen. Even though that fog clouding my mind doesn’t follow me around everywhere like it used to, sometimes I feel so devoid of emotion I can’t bring myself to care about anything. That’s not really good when you have some friends with psychological problems who sometimes need a little reassurance.

As mentioned in '10 Darkest Kids' Episodes', SpongeBob wasn't doing it to be annoying, he was acting sensibly. He had to do it to make sure Squidward was still alive. It's true the episode doesn't get it completely right, though. I agree that the ending was kind of messed up.

Pizza Delivery was his best episode. Squidward didn't wanted to deliver a pizza, but in the end, he get touched by Spongebob who cried after being rejected violently by a rude customer. So Squidward threw the whole pizza and carton to the customer and returned proudly to his colleague, stating that he ate everything everything without the drink (or anchovies in some versions).

Despite personally not liking "Are You Happy Now?" because of the far-too-realistic depiction of depression and seeing an uncomfortable amount of myself, as well as the initial jokes that were in poor taste, I think that your perspective and explanation are incredibly important. Showing that the pain is due to mostly inner turmoil, rather than Spongebob being an oblivious fool, sends a powerful message, and it's important to depict that. Hell, it might have even helped people realize things about their own depression, and I can respect it for that.

I think the reason why Karate Island was so hated was because it was from season four. At that time, the show went from a masterpiece to a lesser masterpiece. And so people were not used to the subtle changes in the newer episodes.

I've watched it since I was small and I always loved it. I started with seasons 1-3 but then watched seasons 4-present and in every season I would always find something I enjoyed. When reviewing things, people need to draw a distinction between quality and enjoyment. You can enjoy a bad episode or movie, and you can dislike an objectively good thing. On Ghost Host, i think because australian tv shows stuff like that for kids frequently, its less "offensively scary"

I absolutely adore this channel. It's something I consider to be a comfort watch, and I always come back to it when I'm having a hard time, even if that means I'm rewatching old videos. Josh has certain personality quirks that feel so welcoming and caring twords his viewers and they always cheer me up. Not only that but his insights and reasoning behind his lists are so logical, and make me rethink and question things on the episodes I never did before. He does incorporate his own opinions but instead of pushing them onto the viewers with the sole argument of "Its stupid, I don't like it" He gives genuine ideas on how it could be better, logical reasoning as to why it didn't work, and vise versa for things he did enjoy. Because of his way of speaking it almost feels like he's having a well thought out and respectable debate. This channel will forever be so comforting and enjoyable to watch ❤️

Albeit, it wasn't the main focus of the episode, it still shows that Squidward very much is willing to trick Spongebob and Patrick into hurting themselves and Spongebob and Patrick are more than willing to fall for it.

For "Are You Happy Now", when that first came out I never actually saw the episode as I had been done watching Spongebob regularly at that point and I just kept hearing about the suicide looking things, and as someone who was battling severe depression around that time, it sounded like to me they were making it into a joke like Family Guy would. But eventually I did go and watch the episode, and I'm glad I was wrong. I haven't seen it in several years, but from what I remember it is a good episode and a nice one, and it really shows that despite everything Spongebob does actually care about Squidward which is nice to see

Also i don't think Squidward and squillam are related but that would be interesting if they were. Spongehenge felt pretty creepy to me but I still liked it. I enjoy House Fancy as it's one of two (or maybe three) episodes where Squidward wins over Squilliam! Squilliam liked to show off his own fancy house and wanted to rub it at the audience. I don't mind the live action closeups in Wormy because I grew up in marshland/wetland areas in Texas and Maryland and there's an abundance of all kinds of weird bugs. In fact, I admire certain bugs, like bees and butterflies as they are great pollinators.

My Favorite infamous SpongeBob episode is Squidwood! It's one that was much more creative than people gave it credit for and hearing tom keeny's (SP reference lol) imitation of Squidward's voice is hilarious . The biggest complaint that the episode has is something that to me is realistic : The patrons being rude and mean to SQUIDWARD. Squidward has been (Pardon my vulgar language) a raging A-hole to the people who visited the Kristy Karb (lol) for over 5 seasons at that point, constantly insulting or belittling them for God knows how long in their show's time. The fact that he is treated with scorn by the patrons is completely believable because he's treated them the same way. Also the fact that They like SpongeBob and Mini-Squidward is completely believable as both are both but a ray of sunshine which you can tell the Citizens appreciate!

I will say Spngehendge was the one episode that when it started I would leave the room or turn off the tv for a bit. The majority of the episode was fine, but the ending always terrified me. As I’m older now and I can think about it retrospectively I think it’s because the end doesn’t do that thing where they let you know SpongeBob will be better in the next episode.

I actually like nearly all the episodes you mentioned except Are You Happy Now but honestly after hearing your thoughts on it has inspired me to give it another chance. In all seriousness I have no idea why the fandom for a kids show about a talking sea sponge is so negative and toxic while don’t get me wrong the middle seasons had some bad and mediocre episodes for sure. everyone just thinks the show should of died after the movie even though they forgot in those middle seasons there were good episodes (and you say that about a lot of other long running cartoons that ppl gave up on) and messages. I honestly loved the Wormy episode. I think it’s funny and oddly wholesome when SpongeBob and Patrick befriend the caterpillar. But despite loving the episode, I was always afraid of the closeup and made sure I wasn’t watching it in a dark room. I don’t think bugs are terrifying but they can be pretty scary close up, but that’s why most of them are small. Bugs can be scary for some individuals but they can be unique and fascinating for others!

I agree entirely with the are you happy now take that you had, it’s possibly one of the best characterizations of SpongeBob in the entire show, and I do like its depiction of depression, minus the jokes that just simply aren’t cool in the slightest, but apart from that, this is a great episode for SpongeBob Another note, how is wormy an infamous episode? I love it wholeheartedly, I think it’s hilarious, especially the Krusty Krab secret entrance, but I can see why some people might be off put by the closeup of insects

One episode I still love that for some reason everyone else hates is Atlantis SquarePantis. And I still don’t get why so many people despise that episode. I actually enjoyed a lot of the songs that were in it and the scenes with Patchy to me were actually pretty funny and entertaining to watch. And it actually is kind of unsettling to see everything become a barren wasteland out of nowhere. And I think it’s the first time a catastrophe has ever happened to Patchy. Most of what we see from Patchy is just some silly scenes of Tom Kenny as a pirate who lives in modern times apparently and he seems to have a lot of fun playing Patchy too. But I also love the actual cartoon part of the episode and you can’t deny that they had some really cool changes in the animation style. With Mr. Krabs having a song when they arrive in the room full of gold. They change the animation to a paper like style of animation and then we have a song with Squidward going through a bunch of paintings some of which are famous paintings from the real world and I really love that he goes into paintings like Mario in Mario 64 and then we have a song from Plankton where the animation has a very comic book animation style and then you’ve got my favorite part of the episode with Sandy’s song. They LITERALLY go into a video game where they’re all pixelated and 8-bit and how can you not appreciate some creative animation like that. But yeah, Atlantis SquarePantis is an episode that I like that everyone else doesn’t.

22:15 Wow. Was not expecting to see my face in a PhantomStrider video. Just now got around to watching this. Honestly, I agree with a lot of the episodes on this list. Ghost Host, Squeeky Boots, Spongehenge, Wormy and Karate Island are among my favorite episodes. And as for my review of Are You Happy Now? I might have overexaggerated a bit. As someone who suffers from depression, I actually like the concept of the episode, I just didn't think it was that well executed and I wasn't a fan of the ending or the self-harm jokes. Never knew the creators actually took those jokes out though, so good on them for realising their mistake.

When I seen this up so I didn't understand why people dislike it but sometimes Nickelodeon does good with explaining hard topics like Mental Health, loss of a family member, depression, and even the HIV aids crisis and then you got some bad episodes that like they tried but they were still bad and this one is on the good category. This shows the accurate depiction of depression is and kind of basically show warning signs of someone who is not in a good place because I've been through that I'm still going through that I've been having depression ever since officially diagnosed in 2017 but was even before that it shows an accurate depiction of depression and what can it cause on the person suffering from depression or any mental illness. So good on the creators for doing this episode how It addressed depression. Why people dislike this episode and they deleted the scenes of the joke out suicide knowing basically admitting hey we effed-up or we are going to admit our mistake that shows commitment that's why I love SpongeBob they actively try to fix their mistakes especially when it comes Infamous episodes they just take their criticism and try and make a funny moment or a sad moment or memorable moment. Now I wish Paramount plus did that but they ain't going to admit to their mistakes

I’m someone who has had bouts of depression, and I honestly believe they did Are You Happy Now? Mostly right(besides the two jokes) for the reasons you said. I remember during 2020, my mental health was the second worst it’s ever been, and there was this one day I woke up and just couldn’t feel anything. It wasn’t that I wasn’t trying or anything like that. I was listening to music, having pancakes, watching the but there felt like a void where I just couldn’t express, yet was on the verge of tears at the same time. I couldn’t sleep well, struggled to do the things I enjoy, and would find myself either crying till 2am or void of much. At that point I needed someone to help me, in my case being my mother taking me available places and friends(both my drama club and online friends) keeping in touch and making sure I was okay during this, like how Spongebob tries to help Squidward. There are certainly things wrong with the episode but I don’t think it’s bad like people say

I personally think the reason Are You Happy Now is so hated is probably because of the following. While it does have a good message and an incredible portrayal of depression, people who don’t fully understand the subject might see this message get overshadowed by the fact that the entire world seemed to turn on Squidward in this episode, which I think is something u may have overlooked. Plus, their are the imperfections that u mentioned earlier. But regardless, I do see why some people would like this episode, I just feel like the episodes message could have been delivered better. Take the following scenario, for example. I know that u said u liked how Squidward and SpongeBob saw eye-to-eye in this episode, but what if when Squidward and SpongeBob decide to try to work together to create a good memory, Squidward’s hatred towards SpongeBob just kinda got the better of him, and he suffered as a result? In other words, it wouldn’t be the world that turned against Squidward, but Squidward only hurting himself as a result of his unwillingness to work with SpongeBob. And imagine that being the reason he closes himself off. The struggle would be a purely internal one, not the Squidward torture that we all know and hate. And in my opinion, if the portrayal of depression wasn’t already realistic enough, giving Squidward a relatable reason for closing himself off would make his struggle in the episode even more realistic. And as for the ending, SpongeBob could at first try to intervene as he did in the episode, but then instead of the ending we get, SpongeBob tells the rest of the main cast about the problem. And then instead of of kidnapping Squidward, SpongeBob and the rest of the cast could maybe throw a party outside of Squidwards house to cheer him up. We could also get a bit of a bitter sweet undertone, with Squidward, while he managed to beat his depressive episode, isn’t exactly done with his depression. Depression is a long undertaking, and that fact could be sorta lampshaded in the end. But either way, this episode, while it’s certainly not the best, I can certainly think of…other much worse Squidward torture episodes (I’m looking at you Smooth Jazz in Bikini Bottom) Sorry for going on for so long, I just wanted to share what I would have done differently had I written the episode. I’m looking to become a writer-producer some day. Let me know if u like it.😁

I remember laughing as a kid when Spongebob invaded his privacy, but looking at that years later, i found it to be extremly disrespectful. Especially when Spongebob appeared in the bathtub, or when Squidward just wanted to eat a chocolate and enjoying his day peacefully, no wonder why he moved to Tentacle Acres.. i do agree that the city was too perfect, but it got what he loved: peace and quiet, food, dance, musicians.. Spongebob and Patrick should have realized how invasive they were, so the "Are you happy now?" episode wasn't forced or plain creepy like some others.

And this is an interesting point. A young child might not know what depression is or what it looks like. And for a supposedly "kid-friendly" show like Spongebob, this seems a bit sensitive to be showing them this at an early age. Of course...it can't be as crazy as One Coarse Meal where Plankton almost tried to "off" himself by waiting for a bus to run him over. THAT is morbid.

My opinion on each episode is like so; Ghost Host; Meh. Night Light; The ending could've been better. House Fancy; I really wish they cut that couch scene. Wormy; I got my fear of bugs from this... SpongeHenge; I enjoyed the song. The Krabby Kronicle; I thought this was okay. Karate Island; Loved the action. Squeaky Boots; The squeaking wasn't that annoying. Sportz; The only time Squidward deserved getting hurt. Are You Happy Now?; This hits home way too hard.

Oh thank god there’s someone out there who thinks House Fancy isn’t the worst thing ever. People always get up in arms about the toenail scene, even when I’d argue it’s not even That Bad, and all those people actively forget that it all culminates in Squidward winning because of SpongeBobs antics. Seasons 6 and 7 have far more egregious outings than that and it’s not even close.
