Hi Zane, i understand the difference between fast and slow compressors and also between compressors adding less or more overtones on top off the signal, but what are your criteria to distinguish between a one channel compressor, a bus compressor and a master compressor?

A channel compressor will control your dynamics, a bus compressor will tame big peaks and bring up smaller transients which essentially glues your sounds together and a mastering compressor will give a final over all tone and balance

The problem is, that "average" ears don't hear anything. That makes is pretty impossible to even understand how to adjust it. So I only use such for ducking... on/off...done.

Average, below average, above average. All ears will hear compression. Un-trained ears may not recognize or understand what they are hearing but they will hear it. The average person may not want to learn about compression as the average person just listens to music and enjoys it. This is fine. The average person has no need to know what compression is or does. As long as the music sounds good to them that’s great. Music producers tend to want to learn what compression does, how it can benefit their music and how to use it. I don’t consider these people as just average people when it comes to music production. These are people that either already know and/or are continually learning about music production tools and how they can enhance their music.

If you want to use a compressor more extreme then go for it. You can squeeze the life out of your audio with some of these. I like to use my compressors in a more subtle way so that’s how I show them.
