You my friend get the golf clap of the day. Did you grow up around French speakers? I grew up in San Diego where there weren't a lot. So I had no idea how to pronounce for example Quimper.

Thank you very much. Your videos always inspire me to stop being lazy and learn more French instead. The only one I knew well is Metz. I've often taken the train from Frankfurt, Germany, to Paris, and at Metz the locomotives are switched from German railroad (DB) to SNCF, and on the return trip the opposite.

I'm a beginner french student. I've always wanted to learn French because I know I will be visiting Paris/ France one of these days. In addition, I just want to learn a new language. I think you are an excellent teacher, I don't know the alphabet and I always prefer knowing that before learning a language. However, when you introduce the words and explain why they are pronounced that way I have a better appreciation of the language. Merci beaucoup. AU REVOIR.

I wonder if some of those spellings/pronunciations are because it was a Celtic region. The German areas might have a secondary German name too, like Koln / Cologne. Interesting to hear about the less well-known French cities (not Cannes, Nice, Marseilles, etc.) :-)

You're from Brittany! An English expat lived in Guer. Gay? Gooay? He pronounced it as in English "girl", leaving the L off. I said I thought it was more like the English "air" with a hard g on the front. He didn't change, nice guy but very little local contact. If I could add one to your list, it's Aix, as in Aix-en-provence, which my french neighbour pronounced like the English "ex". It seems to break every rule. Locally we have Sixt-sur-aff, where the six is not pronounced see or cease, but seeks. With a T on the end. Nice video, keep up the good work!

The spelling of these places says a lot about their history. And some of these places are very old indeed. I've read many of these names for decades, but some of them i had no idea how to pronounce. Especially given the vagaries of French orthography; which is, if possible, even goofier than that of English.

Good day, Miss Cindy. Could you please make up some lessons on deferent mouth "positions," tempos, motion (moves), and sounds, such as the tongue, nasal (and type of nasal motion), lips along with vowel and consonant sounds separated. For instance, for me, the U & E sound the same, but I know they do not sound alike; or maybe how to make the french R due to the fact that for people whose first language is Spanish, Russian, or even Italian, R sounds VERY different. Basically, what I am trying to imply is that for you, native speaker, can make those "weird" sounds easy and effortlessly, but for foreigners is NOT that easy at all. lol. I do really need to work on the following sounds: 1) Voyelles orales (i as in lit, e as in dé, a as in sac, o as in château, u as in moulin, ə premier, ø as in feu, ɛ as in chaise, ɑ as in pâtes, ɔ as in soleil, y as in autobus, œ as in fluer) 2) voyelles nasales (ɑ̃ as in gant, ɛ̃ as in lapin, ɔ̃ as in ballon, œ̃ as in parfum), 3) semi-voyelles semi-consonnes, & consonnes ( wa as in oiseau, we as in tramway, wi as in sweat, wɛ̃ as in point & ɥi as in biscuit & je as in pied, ɛj as in abeille, œj as feuille, ɑj as in paille, uj as in grenuille). 4) Consonnes (4.1. sonores [b,d,g,v,z,ʒ]. 4.2. sourdes [p,t,k,f,s,ʃ] 4.3. nasales [m,n,ŋ,ɲ]. 4.4. liquides [r,l]). I do thank you for your wonderful videos and I am blissful due to the fact that you are cheerfull to help me out with my French. PD: you ought to come to my Colombia to teach French and practice Spanish.

@Frencheezi
@Frencheezi 4 жыл бұрын

Not really : im in Quimper is pronounced [ ɜ̃ ] whereas un is pronounced [ œ̃ ] well may be no more in Brittany but in the southern part of France still.
@Frencheezi
@Frencheezi 4 жыл бұрын
This is a debatable topic. It used to be true, but French, like many other languages, is evolving all the time. I come from Brittany and only know ONE person who still makes the distinction. Most people no longer do. After fairly extensive online research (being as I can't speak for the whole of France since I haven't been everywhere!) it would seem that the situation is the same in most places. The distinction seems to be disappearing everywhere. Hence why I choose not to teach it. I remember my English teacher, many moons ago, telling us that our goal while learning / speaking a foreign language, is not avoiding making ANY mistakes, but purely being able to make ourselves understood. That's the philosophy I choose to adopt myself. In my personal opinion, there's little point in teaching such tiny nuances, which are rarely used nowadays anyway, and certainly not even seen as a mistake. I don't believe most people learning French would benefit from learning to speak the language better than 99% of French people do, and even less so, if those rules are that of "purists" rather than the way the language is actually spoken by most people. Again to each their own, but that's the reasoning behind my choice.
