Just as we finished the game she was EXTREMELY mad because she had been asking for a good 45 minutes and as we were saving the game she comes up and rips the plug out. We thought nothing of it seeing as she was absolutely fuming until the next morning when we woke up to find that the memory card with 15+ completed games including Simpsons hit and run, God of War, Final Fantasy X, GTA San Andreas, Etc. got COMPLETELY wiped because she unplugged it as we were saving... IdealIdeas100 games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim have this feature where they might auto save after you enter/exit an area and if there's an enemy on the other side that's especially powerful you're pretty much f***ed. Load and enter open area, get 1 shot by enemy, die then rinse and repeat. Then you'll have to play the mini game of pressing the pause button inbetween the time you load the area and the time you die to reload a past save. It gets even worse when you mod the game with things like modern weapons mods that do 500+ damage.

Updates and patches are predominately a good thing in this age. Conversely, the devs are being pushed harder and harder by their publishers to release these games within a certain time frame (look at Christmas). I'm looking at you, fucking Ubisoft.

f*ck updates, we just want to play :)
@Cobradabest7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they can be good, but not when they are relied on like they are, there is a problem with how developers are being treated, sure, but I don't think punishing the consumer by forcing big updates and such on them is the answer. The ways things currently are would only benefit the publishers, and even then, I don't think it is most of the time. There has to be a better solution out there.

how about having to have specialized "Boot" disks to push everything into "extended Memory" to squeeze out as much as you can from the 640k conventional memory pool games would use to run on. (im looking at you kings quest series LOL)
@heimdall19735 жыл бұрын
Ob. yes, QEMM was the one that was able to mama 634 kB of lower memory available with carefully calibrated driver loading that required a couple of reboots. And some DOS games (Cannon Fodder comes to mind) wouldn't even attempt to run with less than 630, even though there was megabytes of extended or expanded memory available. Yes, you also had to sort out extended and expanded memory for programs that could use it. Real mode applications could only address 1MB of memory, and 360 I think was ROM (BIOS routines, ...). So there was only 640 kB of RAM available, some of which was taken by DOS. For accessing more memory you needed to use protected mode, don't really know the details, but most programs needed memory managers, e.g. HIMEM or QEMM, that provided easier access to memory. Most programs using extra memory demanded extended memory, some were happy with expanded memory, and very few were able to use the memory directly. Windows 3, for example, wouldn't load without a memory manager. Windows 95 would, as it would wipe DOS and everything from memory and use it all directly for itself. Where Windows 3 had the "exit" option to go back to DOS, Windows 95 didn't (for obvious reasons), you had to reboot is so DOS was reloaded etc.

I think they did it like that was cause so there were no tuning knobs protruding out the front. I got the tv cause my uncle broke one of the dials cause he lost the little sick and he tried using something else. The stick had like 2 or 3 little prongs on it, the whole thing wasn't much bigger than match stick. Plus the tv only had like 8 channel BUTTONS peroid, you couldn't of watched cable on it if you wanted to.

@MidBoss6667 жыл бұрын
+GerryMOTO For one, now games even with DLC cost less than a single game back then (roughly 90~100$). And that's not to mention how much money gamers spent at the arcades. Second, you'd be surprised how many games had various microtransactions back then as well, from smaller ones, like designing parts of the game so that you MUST buy a guide or official magazine to clear certain points (blowing up a specific unmarked wall in Zelda 1 or the whole Castlevania 2 tornado thing) to bigger ones like additional discs with bonus content and expansions (which even costed more than DLC since it had to be sold on a separate physical disc). Third, the most evil money-grubbing dickmove of all, satellite and cable game services... an obscure take on online play, through either satellite broadcast (Nintendo Satellaview) or cable TV (Sega Channel), both of which were not very good, both time restricted, meaning you could only play certain games during specific time sof the day, and the worst part, the cost for said services was astronomically high. The Sega Channel was a cable service, so no hardware was needed, but you had to pay a 25$ activation fee and a 15$ monthly subscription PER GAME (which changed to 20$ for all games later on), while the Satellaview was an add-on that costed around 140~180$ and had a 30~40$ monthly subscription for all games. As you might have guessed, it didn't last really long and the game library for both was very low.
@TheSliderW7 жыл бұрын
Lol, no. You're ignoring inflation, mixing various game systems, not mentioning a date and adding arcade players (?! wtf) into the mix. Also, I don't think the OP was talking about money but since you are... Games, and especially consoles, were globally cheaper yesterday compared to today and this will be true in the future as well as long as inflation rises and if the base game price doesn't drop below 40$. You can do a simple google research to learn about inflation and prices of games in time. Not to mention we're even luckier nowadays as we have sales, rental services, second hand markets and even media libraries that lends software/games for free. All this makes it possible to play almost any game that ever came out with any budget. On a side note : DLC is the only piece of shitty software that doesn't have much, if any, variation in price unless you get it bundled with a specific edition of the game which makes it even shittier ( in rare cases) like Darksiders 2 and it's updated edition that is more jerky and buggy. Which means that most console games out there with DLC have an expiration date on part of their content that will be locked up forever once the service selling it goes down or decides to disable/delete the hosted data. Even if you're willing to pay for it.

Now you have 1 CD but instead of just inserting the disk and playing, you have to wait while it updates (and even a brand new game will have like a day 1 patch because they rushed the game and use the first buyers as free beta testers) and even then you might have to jump through even more hoops like making you sign up for something online before it lets you play. Then there's free DLC that comes with the game: "You got this exclusive item. You just have to go to this website, create an account, confirm your email address and fetch three goats from the well in the woods and drink milk from all of them, except the third one because he's evil, to prove you're human and get the item in-game".

It was bad when you had much younger siblings who see you do it then try to do it themselves when you weren't looking and end up spitting all over the inside of the cartridge. Keeping it away from them was a task because my parents would always bring the cartridge back out for them to play with while I wasn't around. Trying to teach them not to blow spit into it and how to do it right didn't always work either. Several games did release add-on content though. The difference was that it was actually added content, not just stuff they stripped from the base game and locked behind a paywall. The most notable one I remember was GTA 1, which had a London expansion pack released on a second disc. I also remember the command and conquer series had a few on PC. I personally like games that use autosave, but also allow manual saving. Manual saving is a great way to experience all endings to a game with multiple ending scenarios.

When you have like 20 game cases and your brother doesn't follow the basic rule of "put the game back in its original casing" so it either rests on top or next to the console and gets ruined or you have to go through a massive scavenger hunt through your games to find the disk you are looking for.

Loosing a CD key. Back in the day before cross platform DRM like Steam has. Oh, and having to have the CD physically in the tray to even launch the game. While I enjoy having hard copies in the event digital copies are pulled from stores due to licensing running out, I do like the ability to buy a game, and then play it on any of my computers without having to fuss with CDs and especially CDs that tracked and limited the number of times a key could be used, preventing you from installing a game you own on your own computer.

Yes! That last one got my friend, once. He'd bought a new game right before coming to my house. He was too excited to wait until he got home to play it, so we installed it on my computer in the mean time. When he tried to install it at home, later that day? Guess what? DENIED! LOL

Interesting fact. I had a wireless housephone and modern internet. Until last year when we scrapped out housephone altogether, when the house phone rang, it would interfere with the wireless router and cut internet. We scrapped it after we realized that we were just paying a utility whose sole purpose was making us lose internet connection to telemarketers and scammers.
@sin59465 жыл бұрын
I think if you change the channel setting in the router to a different frequency, that might can solve this case.
@mlmmt5 жыл бұрын
@@sin5946 Nope, that wont fix it, the channel is not the same as the frequency, it might lower the affect, but it wont fix it, the problem is that the frequencies most wireless phone systems use line up exactly with the frequencies used by wireless networking (either 2.4 Ghz or 5.1 Ghz), I had the same issue many years ago back when phones were still a thing one had in their house.. and not in their pocket.

I have one problem that was pretty bad. If you had siblings back when memory cards were coming out, you can most likely relate. My problem was when your brother or sister would want to play, but there wasn't enough space one memory card, but they were too lazy to switch it, or you just didn't have another, so they would delete everything you'd been working on. I had this happen to me so much that my family ended up having to get separate cards, and even then, I made an extra effort to make sure my card wasn't inside when I left.

- wired controllers being the standard on consoles, therefore having to sit on the floor in front of the couch for it to reach (the early 3rd party wireless ones sucked!) - the mountain of dead AAs the gameboy left in its wake - needing a link cable (as opposed to local wireless play today) - consoles (ps2/gc) needed an adapter for online play - the original DS didn't support decent wifi encryption, requiring a second ap for anyone that cared/new about security then - game downloads taking days, since internet speeds were much lower - not having enough hard drive space for more than one or two games at a time on pc. - no indie games (or at least no exposure for them) - less games journalism, so not knowing much about games before buying it. or buying games and finding out they are crappy license titles and you had no way of knowing - plain text walkthroughs online you had to scroll through to find the right part, read it in one room on the pc, and try to remember while you walk back to the console in the living room. or print it... (before laptops, smart phone) - split screen multiplayer on tiny tv being the only multiplayer - shooters before they made right trigger the fire button - racers before they made the right analog stick accelerate/brake - not having enough rock band instruments for everyone - pc games before wasd was the standard (keyboard only controls) - wii controllers in general the list goes on and on...
