Former GameStop employee here: Usually for #9 the reason a new game would be cheaper than a used game is because of an agreement GameStop had with the publisher to lower it (usually temporary for something like a sale) and weren’t legally allowed to undercut the new New price with their secondhand Used stock. If they were informed that the lower New price was permanent then they would quickly reduce the prices on the Used ones to stay competitive. Mostly because of people like me who didn’t care about my Circle of Life numbers and would push people to buying the New version because it’s clearly the better choice in that situation.
@Viper-wc2kr
@Viper-wc2kr 3 жыл бұрын
@Its Monke I mean in the black and white sense it’s a bad practice for sure, but I’d probably put that on the publishers (which we all know are bad lol) more so than GameStop in this situation (though I don’t know what sort of deal GameStop gets in return for not lowering the Used prices, if any at all). Glass half full approach is there’s some legal loophole publishers used to restrict GameStop, glass half empty is that GameStop is just straight being paid to not cut the price down.
@Viper-wc2kr
@Viper-wc2kr 3 жыл бұрын
@@bindipig1225 That’s absolutely correct, within a month you’ll be getting close to half the value of the game back if traded in...for credit. The cash value drops significantly and that’s where this misconception of getting $12 for a 2-4 week old game comes from. Usually (from my personal experience) most people trading a game in that quickly are looking to get something else, so they get about half of it paid for (or more in some cases). For Monke, a better way to view it is that $50 you spent is gone and used to play that game’s experience. If you’re done with it and GameStop wants to pay $25, you now have a new additional $25 separate from the original $50 paid. All that being said however, there are absolutely some cases where the credit offered is just insultingly low, and that’s because these titles are just overflowing in the secondhand market, a number of years old and didn’t age well, or both. The original Destiny is a good example here.

@@Viper-wc2kr This doesn’t account for being able to sell the game on Ebay at almost retail price. I’ve had too many friends that worked at Game Stop, some of them are still there decades later have move up the chain. They’re very honest with friends about the amount you get back. They’ll straight up tell you to sell it on Ebay, because there’s no reason you should have to trade in 6 games for one game, and most of the games you’ve turned in are out of stock, because they’re so popular. And, the layaway -program wasn’t even mentioned here, and it’s one of Game Stop’s biggest scams. I haven’t stepped inside of a GS in 5 years, but they were still doing it at that time.
@Viper-wc2kr
@Viper-wc2kr 3 жыл бұрын
@@aknarxus You’re absolutely right! I agree if you want to try and make your money back on a game then places like eBay give you more control and opportunity to do so. However you do have to wait for a buyer, you do have to ship it, and you do have to price it just competitively enough so it doesn’t sit and depreciate. Personally if I saw a game priced on eBay similar to a new copy at Best Buy, I’m just going to go over to Best Buy and pay to have it right now instead of having to wait for it to ship to me. Also, at least with GameStop you can take to them and they’ll pay for it instantly no matter how old it is. The best I’ve found is usually when a game is slightly aged and the seller makes more than GameStop will give, but is selling it cheaper than retailers are offering (I do this). I feel like the only reason you’d need to trade six games in for one is if they’re a bit old, just not in demand, or both. Yeah it stinks having to barter that many titles for one, but like I said before you paid your entry fee for games and had those experiences. I can’t comment on the layaway program, I haven’t worked for them in six years now but I don’t remember if we did it. We were a small store in a very affluent part of town, so most people just paid up front for their stuff.

When I was young I had a ps2 and hundreds of games for it. Family rented out space at a flea market and I was gonna sell my games. Went to gamestop to write down prices they were selling the games I had for used (didn’t have internet access). I was like 12. Manager asks what I’m doing, I explain to him how I am going to sell my games for half of what they would and still triple my resale value based on their trade in values. The manger kicked me out of the store and banned me from coming back. The store closed a few months later.

It’s March 2005, I’m on my way home in the car as a 15 year old holding my brand new copy of Splinter Cell Chaos Theory still wrapped in plastic. I can still remember the way the light reflected off of the wet pavement as the rain continued to fall. I tear open the plastic with such joy and fervor, I open the case and my soul broke into a hundred pieces as I see no discs inside. “But how can this be?” I say as I turn to my dad in the drivers seat. I stare at the case in disbelief that my new precious game case could be empty even though it had been sealed just as the ancient Pharaohs of old sealed themselves in their tombs. A tear rolled down my cheek at that moment just as it does now as I type this. When the thought passes through my mind all these years later I still get shivers that run up my spine, I’ll never be free of that terrible night

Don't they sell alot of exclusive versions of games you can only buy at GameStop? That might contribute to keeping the store running, but I'm unsure of what else could help because they're an absolute rip off to buy standard edition games from. It really puts people off buying anything besides exclusives and I personally don't buy from them for that reason. Edit: Forgot to add that the exclusive/premium editions are overpriced too!

@@deanvance4167 actually they had more than a few copies if I remember correctly this was a few years ago and it wasn't a game that sold much, I think, because it was an indie game, so no it wasn't on reserve or anything. I never really liked GameStop at all, always found it scummy/predatory growing up. Last time I was in a GameStop was when the ps4 slim trade up deal was a thing, and before then was a handful of times. I remember trading in my original ps4, it was in good condition and the controller too, however a small portion of the bar code in the back of the controller was unreadable, but the numbers still were, yet the guy told me he can't take the controller and instead takes away the new controller from the ps4 slim box, so I wound up with a new slim with no new controller. Pretty sure he was the manager also, and then he tried to sell me a controller to go with my slim. Which only mad me more mad, didn't buy it. That original controller lasted me til the beginning of this year, got a new one from BestBuy. GameStop will always be a place I steer people away from, and warn about, it's well within reason.

Yeah I don't think I've ever been to a Gamestop where the cases are "full" on the shelf, you always bring it up and they get the sleeved disc out of one of the drawers behind the counter. So if you get an empty box it's because they forgot to put one in so watch when you go to check out and make sure they hit them all if you're picking up multiple games.

I have a complicated set of feelings for GameStop. I have frequented several locations several times in my gaming life, and had good casual acquaintanceships with the staff at each one. For one, video games and tabletop games are my favorite hobbies, and there's a lot of overlap for the two audiences, so it was, of course, natural I'd try to strike up conversations with people involved in distributing the elements of those hobbies. Some were more "company loyal" than others, yes, some did carry out the company's policies to a point. Most of the ones I met ( in New Haven County, CT), however, did lip service to the policies and we would make offhand jokes about corporate structure. I was a cashier, myself, at the time, so I knew the deal when it came to retail pressure. We didn't share information that was private in our respective companies, more a subtle nudge-wink to how dehumanizing our jobs were, commiseration, etc. I never hated game store employees. Not unless they were genuinely clueless or malicious, which was hardly ever the case. I hope there are still brick-and-mortat retailers of games, with better and more sustanable practices, in the near future. If not GameStop, then someone. I, for one, don't want the act of buying games in person to die forever.

If I was there on my own I would chat with the manager and employees about their gaming experiences and find some things to laugh at. One time I heard about them stopping a woman from buying her 9-year-old son a T-rated game. One of the best things was when my Ps2 died, I went in to get that famous backwards compatible PS3. However, the store manager advised me to get a new PS2 and a new PS3. That was only $50 more than the used PS3, and then I would have a one-year warranty on both without paying extra.

It's easy to pick on GameStop, as they're the only one left. That said, the other guys did the same crap. Babbage's and Software Etc. both pulled the same garbage when they were around. It's simply an issue with the business model. Software DOES NOT bring profits to the retailer. As a former sales manager of a Computer City, I can attest to that. The lowest profit margins always came from the software. That's why big-box stores always did what they could to get you to buy accessories and consumables. The profit was always going to be there, whether it was a ream of printer paper or a printer cable, or a CD stand, or even a crappy little "Epson" refrigerator magnet. The software-specific retailers had to do something. They chose "game trading" to get those profits. When that wasn't helping, they went after accessories, tchotchkes, and other low-dollar/high-profit items.. Of course, the most profit came from warranties and memberships. The LAST thing they ever wanted to do was sell new software .

This is similar to number 10. I tried buying a brand new Uncharted 2: Game of the Year edition. This version came with all DLC, but instead of being included on the game disc, it came in the form of a card with a code on it. The 1st time I bought it at GameStop, you could tell that it wasn't new. It was saran wrapped with a piece of tape holding the back. I questioned this with the employee and he told me that all the contents should be there. He also said that I can open it right there, but after I buy it of course. Not a problem. The instruction manual and the DLC code was missing. Big problem. So I demanded a full refund, which thankfully I got. That was the stores only copy so he directed me to another GameStop that had it in stock. I went over to the 2nd GameStop and asked if they had it. They did. However, what the employee brought out was a shoestring type of disgrace. There was no disc case. The game disc was in a sleeve with the manual and DLC code held together with a fucking rubber band. I don't know what happened to the case but they were trying to sell it to me in that state as BRAND NEW. Who the hell would do something that shady? I asked the girl at the counter if she was serious. Her response was a slow, "Yes," a quick look at the other employee, and both of them staring at me like I was the crazy one. Needless to say I left empty handed. Later, that day I bought it a Walmart and didn't shop at GameStop for a while

2 weeks after launch, you'd get around 30~ish dollars for a game (probably in store credit), because theree wouldn't be a big backlog of the game used yet. Typically, newly launched games are worth $54.99 used at GS and if they game sold well (which Injustice 2 did) GS would offer the most for a used copy for it so they can get their markup and sell the game used. Over-exaggeration isn't something you can get away with online.

I went into Game (uk videogame shop) to buy GTA V, the woman behind the counter was really upset, I remember asking her if she was okay, she scanned my copy of GTA, opened the till, gave me £100 and threw a case of funko figures on the floor, then screamed that she quit before walking out. I tried to catch up to her to see if she needed any help, and to see if she was alright, but she'd gone, I wish I'd have found out what happened for her to freak out like that. I hope she's okay now though.

You can't return the new copies but the used you have a week to return them. Perhaps that is one reason they're also a higher price. At least thats how it was.... 6ish or so years ago which was the last time ive been in a gamestop.

Soo i may get hate for this hear because well its the internet but I just got to comment. I am a current Gamestop Manager, I've worked for the company for 10 years. Although I cant wait to finish my degree and get out of the business, that has more to do with retail and less with gamestop, although yes Gamestop has not been great either its just so so, like it could be worse. I REALLY wish I could talk to the makers of this video because most of their complaints are easily explained and here's some of the ones I can without too much typing Games missing from cases: yeah this is just human error, the employee either got distracted talking to the customer so they didn't grab the gut (what we call the game thats in a sleeve in the drawer) or they put the wrong case in the bag and not the one with the game. This is a training thing and the more organized the store the less it will happen. I myself have done this a ton of times, I'm not saying its not frustrating and if a customer is frustrated ill give a discount to the game to try to help (though I am limited by corporate how much I can discount) The telling customer we don't have something in stock when we do: i can't speak for other stores or managers but this is not something that we do at my store. Sometimes we just don't have stock when we probably should, especially now during the pandemic, during the early parts we were being shipped stock very infrequently. And Pro tip you can ask them (politely please) to show you the screen, most stores can even flip them around now! New games being priced lower than used games: This actually is more to do with the publisher of a certain games than it does us. Alot of times early on in a games life cycle games will go on sale for various reasons and gamestop just doesn't want to take the loss in margin on those games. The company would rather wait the sale out. It sucks I dont have like a defense for that. But its not like we do it ourselves on purpose. My store will just tell you the new game is cheaper (cant promises that for other stores) The pushy salesman: yeah thats just bad sales. We do have a TON to talk to every customer about and its annoying for us too, not as much as for you to listen but still. I train my guys to try to make their pitches as short and simple as they can while doing other parts of the transaction to make sure they are respectful of the guests time. Also something I preach to my guys is their job is to give the customer good information about our services, if they did that and the customer says no then its a no, if you feel like you have to ask "are you sure" you did your job poorly. Each store is unique and we are mostly left to our own devices, some managers just train their guys better than others. Hopefully you have multiple stores in your area and can pick the best one. If anyone has any questions I can try my best to answer them. I'm certainly no PR guy just a manager who knows gamestop isn't the best by any means but also doesn't want it to be put down for simple explainable things.

I 100% understand and that's true. I guess I was more trying to say that its not something that we are forced to do. Is the pressure there to perform? God yes. However you can do it a different way, just alot of manager are, well lazzy, and choose bad techniques. All I do is I do the best with what I am given. If all the stores are shit in your area, I feel for you and I'd say stop going (you probably have) but if you haven't tried different location, see what you can find. Gamestop is an essential business. I'm seventeen and have three 3 little siblings I was looking after while my dad was shopping. About the only thing that could calm them down was playing video games. Gamestop was the only place I could get new games to keep my siblings busy. There was no school, no day trips we could take, TV was just reruns because new episodes couldn't be filmed, and the library was closed so their weren't any new books. Both of the Gamestop's I went to, Harrison(which has since closed) and Glenway, just had me sit in my car outside, call the store and order some games, slide my credit card or gift card under the door, then they would open the door and hang the bag with the games, receipt and my cards on the door. If you think that games are not essentially during a lock down like back then, spend a day or two with 3 bored gradeschoolers. You will change your mind very fast.

One reason I think that they over over charge for used copies is because it incentivizes buying the new copy...which if you try to bring back they will give you 1.50 for a $60 title, where as if you return a used copy within a week you can get all your money back.

If you think they give too little, try a pawn shop. I work at one and have straight up had to tell people they’d get more from GameStop for it. Granted, even with more recent games we severely discount them to be competitive since people don’t typically think of us when they think about getting games, but even then it’s still a bit rough telling people that.

As an ex-gamestop employee of a year, here's my thoughts: 10. it is easy when there is a line and things are hectic to forget to put a game in the case, I think its just a minor slip up that does have to do with how they organize that. 9. This usually has more to do with sales and promos, but your point is also valid. 8. I hated this about the job. Don't do this and get fired... I usually just really tried to pick my battles. I never misled people, at least to my knowledge. Hated that. 7. This was awful, especially in amiibo season. Luckily I never had to make those calls, but people are very VERY protective about their pre orders. 6. I usually never tried with the rewards unless they were a repeat customer or were trading enough things in that it would be free/actually get them more money. 5. I never had to lie about not having the new game, but I would say like "we do but we also have a pre owned I could put aside for you that's cheaper if you are interested". 4. they should've sold the company lol. 3. I didn't work there at that time, but yeah that was a bad look. 2. I don't remember this one. 1. Okay this one a mixed bag. On one hand, I did enjoy telling some people that their 2005 Fifa game wasn't worth anything in 2015 and watching them have a fit, but it stung when I went to trade in halo 3 and they said 50 cents. At the end of the day, they have all the leverage and you don't have to sell to them, which is why you are going to get low balled. There were a few times people would try to film me telling them there game prices. I would just stop the transaction and wait until they were adults about it. Also, to the people who want top dollar for their console that looks like it was dragged through the dirt: what the hell are you thinking???

The empty cases: can confirm it happens. It’s because the game cases on the floor are the actual game cases so customers can see what’s in stock, but they’re empty so games don’t get stolen. Sometimes the employee forgets to put the game back in the case. If the customer comes back it’s really easy to see when we didn’t give out the game because stock will be off and also the security tapes can be checked.

So here's my beef, buying used games. The other local stores would not buy a trashed used game. Gamestop (here at least, college town) takes everything. I have bought games with mould on them. Mashed cigarette ashes. Sticky weed residue. For some reason that I forget, kids used to scrub toothpaste into the inner plastic ring. The store would not allow me to inspect used games before paying for it. The last time before that buying a used copy, I saw the disc an immediately was not happy. They would not take the return at the time of purchase, they guaranteed me it to work, or come back to return it after 'trying' it. I would never in a million years put a disgusting disc like that into my systems. At my local games stores, they have turned down games I have not properly put back in my cases and gained some light surface scratches. It is a drag if you are trying to sell... but great trust in buying used from them knowing the copy is well cared for. The local stores never say no if I want to see the disc, they know they only take the best. End of the day, our gamestops around here, are stocked with the trash that the 'gameplayers' wouldnt take.
