Wow, I was so hoping you would tackle this topic. I spent thousands of hours over many years trying to turn designers artwork into printable images to print on a mechanical printing press. I'm retired and I am still inundated with unprintable artwork sent to me to sort out. So much more time needs to be spent on this topic. Thanks.

100% of each color for rich or true black is not advised. C 75, M 68, Y 67, K 90 is the suggested mix. Cool mixes of 60, 40, 40, 100 or warm mixes of 40, 60, 40, 100 can be used depending on the color scheme of your designs.

Even something like 60 40 40 100 can still cause issues on small text. However, for larger areas this mix is often the best.

Working in a sign shop, I can tell you that it's FAR more than half of "designers" that design for digital and completely ignore print, even when they're "designing for print". It's *infuriating*.

As a designer who has worked in the print industry for over 20 years there a number of points you mentioned that i have memorised due the fact that i would have to talk to most of the designers so send their work to be printed so thank you for talking about that. I have a couple of observations to make, in print there is a way we achieved rich black when a client needed it, best was to add 20-30% Cyan to the solid blacks to make them richer and even with a slight misregistration it does no appear fuzzy, about the paper another point you did not mention (even though is small but important) glossy paper tends to dry faster and has less chances of smudging so if timelines allow Matte is a good choice also but just give the printer a little more time. As for colour profiles, PLEASE make sure you are designing in CMYK and not RGB as not even Printer's colour profiles will save you here. i think i can keep going on here as there is much i have seen as designer but this is just rubbing the surface...

I am in a community college design program. We have an Art Institute nearby and they usually accept students from my program we usually come in with the correct credits to be a Junior because my program goes very deep into the software, organization, and formatting. I know most of this and I am only beginning my second year. I think the only issue with my program is that they are not harsh enough with some students about their designs which is shameful in my opinion because without a good portfolio, it will be difficult to find a job. Thank you for letting me know about the color for small black text that is either something they haven't gone over or are not going to go over but it seems extremely important.

As someone who has worked in a wideformat printing house for quite a while, it is important to mention, that depending on the type of printing technology most times in wideformat you SHOULD have rich or at best 80/80/80/80 black for a nice black. And yes, we often work at 1/10th of the size with e higher ppi, so we have a better dpi when printing (if the printer allows and if that is needed). If interested you can read more into the icc profiles, what are they and get one from the printing companty for the specific printer and specific media you are printing on, to proof your design.

We utilize a HP Pagewide with HP Click software to print commercial blueprints...Sometimes we get alerts to missing fonts from PDFs that contain 'unflattened' active layer plans generated by architects/engineers (then uploaded to a statewide plans exchange) it usually does not cause failures to print but one work around we have found when such is a issue is to re-export the placed pages as jpg etc. Next time consider covering print issues designers may miss in the basis of CMYK vs RGB and also...blows my mind how many degreed designers I run into that can not fathom the premise of full bleed finishing and how to design for it. 😢

I worked on the rebranding colors of the company where I work. And we faced a big problem when we wanted to make the blue more bright. Impossible to match it on print! You must be very careful on what color you use, because it might be unprintable!

Yep! My program very briefly went over this. I forget often but thankfully when working in CMYK color in Adobe it will put a little warning icon. I probably would have forgotten when working on web designs that will also have to be printable. Thank you for pointing this out!

Every single thing i've learned the hard way, except the K:100 on text, that was the very first thing i got taught when i started my graphics design career. I can't stress enough, do a test print. Even if the customer or employer doesn't want to pay and whine, just convince them that it's the best thing. Also, order samples of papers, you want to feel, see how the thickness feels of that particular paper, opacity is also a thing. ALso, avoid glossy paper for most.. it's a terrible choice in most cases.

Hi there, thanks! Yes you can, but not only videos, I suggest checking out other videos and reading books too. It is 100% doable. Master the design principles, look at existing designs and see if you can see what principles have been used and why, and also study marketing if you have the time. Marketing makes you think about design in terms of psychology and business, rather than from an artistic point of view.

I didn't get your point when scaling down a billboard whose actual width is 600cm and height 300 CM into 60cm and 30 vice versa and export it into 300ppi. When it print according to required size can it be readable? Second what will be the resolution of this billboard?

If you make a document in Photoshop that is 600cm x 300cm, and use 300ppi, you will likely crash your computer. Also, billboards don't need to be 300ppi because they are so large. So what you do is make the document 10% of the physical size of the billboard and use 300ppi. When it is scaled up to 100% it will then be 30ppi which is fine for billboards

Sure, but it isn't ideal in a lot of situations. You will b working with imagery and elements that are high resolution for one.

Hey satori, I'm having really hard time converting RGB designs to CMYK colour scheme for Book covers that I design. They look so dull and different and clients feel disappointed. Is there any effective methods professionals use that I'd not be aware of while converting to CMYK?

Hi! Of course the ideal situation is to design in CMYK first. But in this situation you should have the native files, open them up and move them to a CMYK document. Some colours may appear duller or different. So you will need to manually adjust the colours to your liking. This may involve tweaking brightness, contrast, or specific colour values.

With our clients, the rich black is generally 40-40-40-100 or 60-60-60-100. I'll make changes based on whether the type is bold, especially if it crosses over light and dark areas. Another thing to keep in mind when working with images is total ink density (TID). Darker areas on images that run 360 tdi plus may have a tendency to get clogged up and look flat
