A fellow lover of sounds? Shears through fabric, paper clips sliding on and off of stacks of papers, rain falling into a bucket, frogs at night … so many favorite sounds! Yes, the Guggenhein scissors do make a lovely sound, and cut great! My (non-sewing) sister-in-law bought me these shears - even though I told her I own really good scissors and don’t “need” a second pair. Now a quilting friend has bought herself a pair after using mine. She didn’t “need” more scissors either. I agree with the dove gray Aurifil! The big spool lasts a very long time and the quality is great. I will admit to using cheaper large spools because I do a lot of charity sewing, and I am thrifty, but if I could only have one thread it would be dove gray Aurifil. Caveat on the “thrifty” label. I have a ruler problem. With the exception of quilting rulers and templates I am truly not a hoarder. Really. I have many brands of rulers, all different sizes, but managed for a long time with an inexpensive 3.5” x 18.” Then my passion for rulers hit. I am pretty much a lending library for rulers. 😂 Creative Grids are a favorite, and will remain so, but a friend gave me a Quilters Select and it is now my absolute favorite! Only my guilt at the sheer size and number and cost of my hoard of quilting rulers stops me from replacing them with Quilters Select rulers. 😊 I love your chatty videos. You have nearly talked me into thrifting fabric from shirts. Nearly. I want to, but my production (sewing for charity and 28 grandkids) would be substantially impacted. Some day - just for fun - I will do it. Until then, I rescue fabric from estate sales and quilters who are downsizing their stashes. I will keep you posted. Have a blessed Thanksgiving.

The snips are fabulous because you can snip a thread without getting your fingers into the scissor handle holes. So they are a snap to pick up and put down one-handed.

Super video, Cathy! You can sharpen seam rippers. Use a small stone or ceramic rod on the cutting area. Yes, you can absolutely make a pin bowl. Hot glue a magnet or two to the bottom. I like your leather protector; great upgrade. This is a great use for that odd, beloved saucer or the last saucer from your grandma’s set, or a pretty dish you find when thrifting. Yes, scissors/shears are not snips. I attach my snips to my machine with a clip attached to a curly cord - like you’d use to attach keys to a belt. Yes, Aurifil thread is simply the best. One tip: I piece with the same thread all the time - medium gray in the needle and beige in the bobbin. (I use two colors so I can see whether my stitch is balanced at a glance.) I buy my Aurifil in the 5,000 meter cones. Yes, the price of a cone makes me pause when I buy one, but they last for a l-o-n-g time. If you buy the cones, Aurifil thread is no more per yard than cheap thread from the big box store! You do need a thread cone stand if you use cone thread on most machines. The ones with the cast iron bases aren’t expensive and they’re heavy enough to keep your cone upright.
@jhwilliams65503 күн бұрын
I bought an order number holder from a restaurant supply store. It works great for my Aurifil cone and was a lot cheaper too. I tried using an old coffee mug tree of my grandmother’s. It didn’t work for that but is a great option for my scissors and rotary cutters.

I have been gradually replacing my existing rulers with the Creative Grids versions, that’s how much I love them. The feel, the frosted grips on the bottom, the markings, the on-the-ruler instructions - just the best! My latest fave is the flying geese trimmer, but I love the Stripology ruler, too. I also want to mention that Aurifil really has their spool game down. Something about those orange 50wt spools, either the way the thread is wound or the design of the spool - makes the sewing easier. I bought a knock-off on Amazon, and the color choices and price were amazing, but the spools’ inner diameter was just a hair too wide, and the sewing became more choppy and less consistent. Now a lifetime supply of bobbin thread, I guess. Confession: I splurged on an Aurifil collection of variegated thread😍which I’ve only used a couple of times for quilting, but the serotonin boost when opening THAT box is pretty big! Good choices for this list, Cathy. I may “need” those snips…

Ordered the scissors. Can’t wait till they get here. On another note, your linen Comfort quilt, how many shirts do you think it took? I’m in the process of collecting the shirts and I’m wondering how many I might need. Also, after you starch them and leave them to dry, do you iron them before cutting the pieces? Also, if you would like the cuffs,collars, yokes and leftover pieces of the linens and linen/cottons I have leftover after making my quilt, I would be happy to send them to you.
@TheCatBirdQuilts2 күн бұрын
You're gonna LOVE the scissors! As for the linen Comfort quilt, I probably used the backs or 2 fronts (and the occasional sleeve) of 7-10 shirts. I didn't count, and I used some other clothes too (pants, shorts, etc) but I know there were 10 total colors in the final quilt. I didn't use a "whole" shirt for any of the blocks, so you could get away with less, I'm sure! And thank you for the offer of the cuffs, collars and yokes...I don't need them at this time, but that is generous of you!❤️

Creative grid rulers aren’t really that good people need to try out quilters select or Marelli rulers There are so many people in the United States that need clothes and yet this lady is ripping up shirts that could go to those in need

Actually she is saving it from the landfill, as even 85% of donated clothing goes to the landfill or incinerator.

@ but doesn’t she buy this in a thrift store? And why aren’t they donating clothes that don’t sell to the homeless? Such a waste

Go fix the thrift system so all those donated items are matched with a person who needs that specific item. Sound like a tough assignment? It’s impossible. The VAST majority of donated items that are unsold go to landfills. Repurposing by purchasing to wear or refashion into useful items is the greatest success of donation and the thrift system. Your criticism here is unfounded.

@ who the hell are you to tell me that my opinion is unfounded All these thrift stores have to do is give their unsold garments to the salvation Army for example

The actual video starts around 2:47. I love her information, but it takes enormous patience to withstand copious chat.
