Hello everyone! Here are a couple of corrections: I say Mel Brooks during the Critic segment, but I meant James L. Brooks. I must have had Space Balls on the mind! And Phil Hartman started on SNL in the 80's, not the 70's. My mistake ✌️

Apu was basically one of the few morally upstanding citizens of Springfield. He worked hard, he tried to fix his mistakes, he tried to help others and the show never used his background to make fun of his heritage in any way.

He had his downs, too, he wanted Marge to go to jail when she "stolen" the brandy or what it was. It was shown she pulled several items from her pocket because her shopping basket was full. I'm Indian, and generally love how Apu is in the show. I feel like Hank didn't need to step down, he coulda just asked Al Jean or Matt Groening to find some people willing to voice Apu, that are South Asian, and in the meanwhile still voice him. In fact, I don't think Hank needed to step down at all. To me, Apu is part of the reason I love the Simpsons.

It’s called virtue signaling. They think they are so progressive and not racist ( but look into there past and oh boy…). They accuse everyone who is not them of being racist. Personally I feel like most normal people who watch stuff for satire and entertainment are not racist. Yes there is racism in many people. Even black people can be racist. My definition of racism is calling everyone and everything racist based on their skin color and some derogatory statement or word the used. The N-Word by white people is a violation and therefore white people who use it are racist. To point this out makes you very racist. One you are pointing out a word and two you are labeling a race of people and segregating them from using that word. The word is derogatory yes, but it is racist if black people use it or white people. To even mention that you don’t use it or acknowledge your race excusing your self makes you racist because that is constantly on your mind. We’ve heard the phrase “you are what you eat,” people who get angered and have no forgiveness and label someone something are the worst people on earth. They who point it out are the most racist people on earth. I tend to want to love everyone even the racists. I hate racism not racists but hey racist cancel culture would call that racist.

Casting a South Asian actor could create its own minefield, though. South Asia is just as multiracial as the United States, having been settled for many thousands of years by people of at least three different racial stocks. And, as any Indian could tell you, even though the Indian government does not officially recognize race, there is indeed a divisive color line in India. Look at the movie stars in Bollywood - ESPECIALLY the actresses - and you'll see that most of the really popular ones look more like Greeks or Sicilians than what we usually think of as "Indian." Suppose one of those light olive-skinned men was cast as Apu. Worse yet, suppose he's a native-born U.S. citizen! He'd probably have to prove to angry fans that he really was ethnically Indian!

I am of Indian descent (my parents immigrated to the United States from India in their mid-to-late 20s and I was born and raised in the US) and I totally disagree with Hari Kondabolu and say that he does not speak for all Indians or Indian Americans. I see nothing inherently racist about Apu, Because like all characters on that show he is a satirical character. Apu is a caricature of the Indian immigrant stereotype and IMHO Hari Kondabolu needs to get a life (and a sense of humor) to see what not only Apu but the show, The Simpsons is really all about!!!

The problem with hating on Apu is this: Seeing him STRICTLY as a Racist Stereotype is simply untrue and a great disserve to Apu the character. Apu the Firefighter, who saves Homer Simpson. Apu the INCREDIBLY intelligent man who graduated with a tech degree, beating 7 MILLION other students. Apu who loves his job, because he loves hearing people's stories. A man who CHOSES to work a job he loves, NOT because he is Indian and NOT because he is FORCED to. Apu the Ladies Man, a man VERY popular with the Springfield Women. Apu the friend of Paul and Linda McCartney (The Beatles) APu who loves to design, build, and arrange furniture. Apu who is a workaholic, because he finds his home life stressful with his multiple kids Compare that to the Scottish with Willie. Compare that to Bumble Bee man. Compare that to the Ship Captain. Compare that to CHRISTIANS. Compare that to Nerds. Etc. Is Apu a perfect character? NO! He's not even a perfect man. I understand why SOME people may be offended by him. Yet he is FAR better than pretty much any other Simpsons character. He is humanized more than most other characters. More is known about him than most other characters. Ironic that the people calling Apu racist and to be taken out....are th same ones ignoring everything else that Simpsons makes fun of who they treat FAR worse. Why are they not trying to defend Scottish, Italians, Mexicans? Why not defend the Christians? Why not defend the Nerd or Fat people? The Texans? Rich people? Simpsons is meant to be light hearted fun that pokes fun of lots of different people group, but if the ONLY one you think is problematic is Apu....then I think that says something about you. Something that you should probably examine.

After all, even among famous Indians, there's one out there saying "NO! Keep Apu! He's GREAT!!" An if you are going to be outraged by a group respresenting yourself that you feel the ned to stand up for....you should do it for ALL groups. You should be trying to champion for the others that are made fun off.

@@Spamilton1739 exactly. they could have also hired indian writers and find ways to make fun of that situation in a way that is more authentic in their point of view. just cutting out colored characters and fearing to ad new ones doesn't help with their desire to increase diversity. and another thing I notice is some shows go in the other extreme and make it so "authentic" it becomes unrelatable and I don't get the super inside jokes and loose interest... and if they loose the white american audience, the other minorities even if they showed solidarity (which they don't) aren't enough and they loose money and don't get renewed.

Azaria is a Greek Sephardic Jew. If everyone only played their culture, many would never get work. Name the last Greek Sephardic Character you saw in a movie or TV Show. Azaria isn't Italian (Legs, Johnny Tightlips, Luigi Risotto, others), Black (Officer Lou, Carl Carlson, Drederick Tatum, MC Safety), Irish (Chief Yancy Wiggum), Japanese (Akira), Obese (Bumblebee Man, Captain Horatio McCallister, Luigi Risotto, Chief Clancy Wiggum, Comic Book Guy, Doug, Santa Claus, Mr. Costington), a puppet (Gabbo), bad with ladies (Kirk Van Houten, Moe Szyslak, Professor Johnathan Frink, Comic Book Guy, Bumblebee Man), or a bunch of other qualities, backgrounds, ethnicities, whatever, which makes it hard to cast to find someone who is really those. Note: This is why it is called acting, because you are portraying something you likely are not... Miyam Bialik as Neurobiologist Amy Farrah Fowler is a rare example of someone playing a Doctor who actually had the degree to be it, neither Jim Parsons nor Johnny Galecki have degrees in Physics (Parsons has a BA in Theatre, Galecki dropped out of High School after one day of 8th Grade), Simon Helberg is really Jewish but not an Engineer, Kunal Nayyar was born in London not (though he did move to and grow up in) New Dehli and has no degree on Astrophysics, Melissa Rauch is Jewish (not a Polish Catholic) by birth and not marriage and neither voice she used on Big Bang Theory is her natural one... yeah, acting is weird, people do this thing where they pretend they are partially or greatly something they are really not... such a crazy concept.

Even with all his flaws, Larry never does anything more immoral than make jokes at others' expense, and he does so not in malice but in good fun. Complaining about Apu being a stereotype when literally every single character on this show is a stereotype of some kind must be one of the dumbest possible arguments I've ever heard in my life. Literally the only thing this accomplished was removing a minority character from the show, which is pretty much the exact opposite of what the people whining about it probably wanted to accomplish. Genius.

Yeah, compared to Cletus for instance, Apu is a really admirable character and his nationality is never insulted directly (except a couple times by Homer when Homer is being a real asshole). But I understand that mores change, and it's cringey nowadays for a white person to voice a non-white accent. I don't mind phasing out Apu (in truth they should phase the whole show out just because it's gone on beyond too long!) it's just responding to the feel of the times. That's normal. You couldn't have a white man doing an asian bit like Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's nowadays, and I think most people would agree with that decision.

All these problems would have been avoided if the show was allowed to end back in late 90's... People can like and defend modern Simpsons, sure, but who needs Troy McClure missing, Edna being dead, Flanders widower twice, Apu missing, Fat Tony dead, etc.? Let's be honest here. If the show ended after season 8 or 9... Nowadays Maude, Fat Tony, Edna and everyone would be happy and ALIVE... especially Edna (sorry but those modern storylines don't work for me at all)...

Grimes was not good nor sane like everyone make him out to be. Grimes was a stuck up creep who thought he was better then everyone. Nobody like him, homer was the only one who try to be his friends even invite him into his home and in return he was a jerk towards homers. Sure homer a idiot but he does get along whit other people which is why he has a job, friends and family. Unlike Grimes who look down on everyone around him that ad close he got to a making a family is knocking up a hooker? That not a sane man, that a arrogant guy who look down on someone else that had a better life then he ever did that it drove him insane to a point it killed him. It not like homer had a easy life either. He work for a madman who don't respect his work along whit being the only member of the family whit many mouths to feed.
