I know EXACTLY the part you’re talking about. And FUCK it’s good. Better than anything on this list. I think because it’s more of a transitionary riff rather than a verse of chorus riff, it gets over seen. Not saying I agree with that. But these lists always try to pick the riffs that are from hooks, or are like the opening riff to a song that gets a reaction from a crowd.

Personally, Asleep In the Deep is just so unique, deep and abyss-like and so atmospheric, very intricate as well with those arepeggiated chords, and my first Mastodon song, I will always know that song to be one of the most influential to me, really beautiful feel and vocals so incredible, particularly those verses, emotional harmony.

Blood and thunder is the simplest riff they've ever wrote. The drummer actually wrote the riff himself on guitar. That song has the coolest lyrics ever put to a metal song in my opinion. Split your lungs in blood and thunder when you see the white whale break your back and crack your oars men if you wish to prevail. White whale holy grail. But for me this list doesn't cut it. Crystal skull is one of their most famous and instantly recognizable riffs. Crack the skye has one of the greatest sludge crunch riffs ever. The czar is loaded with dazzling, guitar neck adventure riffs. The last baron has a tool inspired sounding riff that is instantly recognizable when they play it. But for me the greatest mastodon riff closes out the amazing and underrated song sea beast. The most giant riff ever comes roaring at the end of the song. It's instantly stands every hair on end. By far their strongest and burliest riff the maestros in mastodon have come up with.
