How do you build a "fanbase", if you haven't finished a book? I get having social medias but what do you put on them if you are in the middle of working? What do you post when outlining or character development without giving away spoilers? THis has been bothering me for a long time and no one seem to have the answer.
@MandiLynnWrites
@MandiLynnWrites 6 жыл бұрын
A great thing you can do is talk about your writing without giving away spoilers. What are the highs and lows of writing? You can also teach. Talk about the craft of writing and and how you write your novels. 😊

I was going to say that I like the idea of uploading weekly or bi-weekly videos documenting your writing process. Don't spoil anything about the book but let people know what your current state of writing feels like that week. I think it will also be cathartic to you AND help you stay disciplined. If people slowly start to follow your videos then you will feel responsible to make the video on recurring deadlines. If you don't have anything to report because you didn't get any writing done then you'll feel like crap not being able to talk about anything new.

You can post the playlist you're using to write, or images you're using as inspiration, some images of yourself so people can get to know you. Also, make writer friends to share with, ask questions to, etc.

Your presentation is always a pleasure. You seem kinda down today. I hope things are well with you. You are one (I only have a few) of my main sources for information and inspiration. While I struggle with most of the things you just listed, I feel as though I will get there. Thank you for the succint list. Even though most of it hurt a little. I direct people to your channel whenever the opportunity arises. You are a blessing to the writing community.

Awesome tips! Definitely agree, successful authors (and people!) work harder and harder everyday, & specially artists, don't just sit around waiting for inspiration, or waiting for the oportunity to knock on their door, they make them themselves!

As for advice, I'm not a highly successful author, so I don't have tips. However, in dance when I'm creating a choreography, I find discussing ideas with people often gives me ideas and inspiration. Doesn't necessarily need to be a conversation about the choreography itself, but recently have been making a gameshow themed choreo. Talking about gameshows with people gave me a lot of ideas and insight. I have been doing this with my husband, discussing ideas and themes in the book, as well as the plot. It's given me a lot of ideas for cool extra details I can add as well as making me aware of possible plot holes before I finish writing.

I love how this list helps me beat back my fears. Something that has helped me over the years is keeping every piece of criticism in a file. You're not always ready to learn from it at the time you receive it. Even if you think you know what it means when you first get it, sometimes you get even more from it when you look at it later.

Great video as always! Everything you said is spot on. I think over the years I've conditioned myself to welcome feedback. At the end of the day, I'd rather know what's flawed in my manuscript early on in the editing phase than later on when the book is out in the world and people are holding torches at my door for not fixing those writing flaws. Something I did learn about being successful as a writer is to never be afraid to ask those I trust to help me sort through initial writing ideas. Having someone else's thoughts is a great way to ensure I don't run into major plot holes later on in the writing process. Plus, having them help out initially is a great motivator since they feel invested and want to see me succeed all the way through. I think that applies to all fields of work too. Most importantly, it's okay to write in our own style and not be like x author. I've had to learn that after years of writing. In the end, embracing our unique writing style and voice will help us succeed by standing out better than attempting to copy someone else's style and voice.

I love your content, Vivian. I specifically love this video. What I would really like is a video or a series of videos on how to market yourself. Like, how to implement a system of when someone goes to your blog, they have to sign up for a newsletter(what are the logistics of that?) or what to include in a newsletter or how to give away free stuff or maybe an example schedule of how much time to spend on social media vs. your writing vs. marketing yourself. Right now, it's all squishy-squashy in my mind of how to do all that. :-)

I recharge and become inspired at the same time by watching and reading things of the time period and genre of the novel I'm writing... If I'm writing a novel that takes place in Victorian times I might watch wonderful Victorian dramas. If I'm writing a novel of the Old West I watch Western movies. [Yes, and I research, research, research... I've come to love researching because so many of the facts I find are fascinating!!!]

Luckily I have no shame, so asking for feedback will never be a problem for me. The only real issue I have is that my full-time job as a software developer means I am writing code all day, every day. And by the time I get into wanting to write something, even if it's a bit of slow progress, most times I can't. Hands, fingers are tired. Brain is burnt out. I am looking at text all day long and the last thing I want to see is more of it. It's gotten so bad that I might write at most ONE paragraph per day. But I guess that's "progress."

I say do what works for you, as in don't fix something that's not broken. However, it builds Neuro pathways in your brain to give other things a try, and can advance you. Venturing beyond what you know and what works for you is hard and challenging, seemingly impossible, but if you keep chipping away at trying a new thing, that will help. Just because something doesn't happen right off and seems like you've failed at it, usually means you're starting new neural pathways. It's impossible not to build those, but the beginning stages seem like nothing's happening and you've failed. Check out "the unschedule" from The Now Habit - only Neil Fiore, the author, is the one who explains it accurately, at least from what I've found, so ignore the others on here. Be realistic in how many things you can accomplish, and UNschedule with those in mind, revisiting your goal weekly. And check out the most recent version of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I know it's drawing, but read the introduction to it and the chapter on applying it to other practices.

Did you spend any money on marketing? Or have you done all organic self-marketing? Or did you just not consider marketing costs under the “publishing” umbrella?

Vivien Reis yes I am so excited! I’m working on the second draft of my first novel and just starting to look into traditional versus self. I know that paying for marketing is one of the things you have to (or, *should* do) with self-publishing. I look forward to hearing about your experience.

Each and every day we tune into hundreds of entertainment videos to watch and simply pass our time relaxing. The website products such as Android, I-phones and all the i-pads, i-pods, desktops and tower computers sell billions of dollars of equipment to make these possible. The artists being part of video's, books or music depend on subscribers to get paid. In a full year around the clock there are 8,000 hours. At 8,000 total subscribers we consider 1 subscribers a day. At 80,000 subcribers we have 10 subscribers a day. So if the entertainer has 10 subcribers a day we set a dollar amount of $2.00 for the script we multiply $2.00 to 10 and receive $20.00 each day everyday. We are writing from the many behind the scenes professional's who are performing, writing or publishing or scripting these playlist. Yes we are talking to the Original Equipment Manufacturers to step up to the plate and move money forward. Thanks, MrRibardo I
