what a compliment to be asked by the Booker's to write an article for them...bravo!

Personally I found the God of small things by Aroundhatti Roy and more recently the Promise very heartbreaking but in an everyday bitter sweet sense.

Yes, absolutely both of those as well!

Definitely need to read these. Sad books always seem more realistic and sometimes relatable

I'm so happy you included a William Trevor novel. I would probably have selected The Story of Lucy Gault which has such a profound sadness. I adored 10 Minutes 38 seconds in this Strange World 💔

Thanks Eric for a very interesting list! I was thrilled to hear Mrs. Palfrey… first on the list! It’s actually the only one I have a copy of. I heard of some others but haven’t read them so many more to add to my TBR list! Thanks again! 😊

For me: Hanya Yanigahara writes SO so beautifully that you almost forget to be devastated for a few minutes here and there. lol.. I loved "A Little Life" AND "To Paradise" equally... A NEW BOOK from her CANNOT COME SOON ENOUGH as far as I'm concerned! :)

It's a good list but how do you overlook A Fine Balance, God of Small Things, Sacred Hunger, and The Story of Lucy Gault?

Really amazing picks! I wrote down the ones I haven't read yet. If I had been asked, I woul have had to include Prophet Song. I have never (to my memory) had a stronger emotional response to a book. It just really "got" me.

Thank you and, yes, Prophet Song is a really powerful novel!

I've only read Elif Shafak's novel and loved it, while it was sad, it was a bit uplifting too that she had such a wonderful ragtag found family. Can't wait for her new book to come out later in 2024

I loved william Trevor’s novel. I have always been highly admirative for a male author to be able to give such an arrowing description of a woman ’s feelings...all of Trevor ’s novels are extremely moving.

I'm currently reading "A Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry. It's possibly to be one of the best books I've ever read. It transports me. I forget I'm reading. I regret to say I am one of the people that had a negative opinion of "A Little Life." Had to bail on it.

Thank you, Eric!🌷I must admit I haven’t read any of the books you’ve mentioned. For me A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki was heartbreaking. Both the bullying of the teenage girl at a school in Tokyo and the training of WW2 kamikaze pilots were almost unbearable to read. Great novel though.

We need to stop peddling a little life at people if you loved it great but it is an incredibly brutal and traumatic book to recommend

It’s his right to recommend whatever book he thinks is good. He literally says it’s his opinion and taste at the start of the video. Don’t force people to self censor.
