I'm 66 now and this year I couldn't stand the thought of dragging up my 7 foot Xmas tree, I assemble it, put the lights and decorations on it and it takes me 2 days. This year I decided I'm done with that and purchased a 4 foot prelit tree to put on a table. I may miss that big tree but I definitely won't mind not having to do all that work!
@jennywaterswellnessАй бұрын
Way to simplify but still enjoy a tree! I hope you have a joyful season!
@luvzdogzАй бұрын
Though I'm of a different age 😉 I can relate. I love how the final tree looks and enjoy it in our home but I decided I really don't enjoy the process. I'll still out it up this year but at some point I'll probably stop. What I try to do "instead" is visit several local, free things that are festive and have lots of decorations that give me that experience. We have a nearby park that does a huge Christmas display and put lights all over the huge park. And it's free!
@Youngstown52929 күн бұрын
But what else do you have to do at 66?
@MelindaPlainandSimple25 күн бұрын
We have been alternating between the big tree and the small one for a few years. I decorate the big tree with my rag doll and bear collections and enjoy them every other year instead of displaying them. But last year, I didn't enjoy it. I'm thinking about putting it up again this year. If I don't enjoy it, it may be time to let my collections go and stick with the small tree going forward.

And we still have to take it all down again after Christmas. I do 2 smaller trees, 1 in dining are & 1 in lounge. This year they will have lights & bows to dress them. Simple & beautiful. At 77 the simple gives me happiness. Merry Christmas to everyone. With Love & Light (& bows) 😂

My family loved Christmas. I did not. The truth is that I dreaded the season. The year my husband passed away, I put my foot down. No more open house on Christmas Eve, where it seemed everyone we and our children knew gathered at our house for food and festivities, then midnight services and back to the house for a few more hours. Then, to wake up on Christmas Day, prepare brunch for all our out of town house guests, clean up, and continue the preparations I had started a 7 in the morning for the Christmas dinner feast. Our family from out of town usually stayed for several days, so I was constantly cooking, cleaning, babysitting, or chauffeuring people here and there. I hated every minute. Now, the adult children and relatives handle the festivities and I plan cruises, trips to resorts, or just a quiet day with friends who are also widowed. I can finally feel the joy of the real meaning of Christmas.

@KT-wr3cv I am glad to see others are still like me. To each his own yes. But today's world (not meaning this creator) like the stores for instance are rushing our lives away. I used to look forward to Thanksgiving and then seeing the Christmas stuff come out. Then in dreary January the fun Valentine's Day stuff/candy. Easter after that. Last year Easter was out IN FULL SWING in Dollar Tree 10 days BEFORE CHRISTMAS here in NJ. Now-- more than a week before Thanksgiving-- I see people hauling Valentine's Day decor from TJMaxx. I have seen people comment yay because they are sick of looking at Christmas stuff. Sure they are because it's been out since August. I do celebrate Christmas in July, but it is in Summer fashion. I definitely don't want to be perusing Valentine's Day decor in November. Life is short enough. Stop and smell the roses.

Even fewer sent some in return and most of those who did only sent them out of obligation. Though it's not about receiving...it's about giving and spreading joy...it's still nice when it's reciprocated. The last few years, however, I've stopped sending them due to safety reasons (long story). I miss sending cards out even if they weren't appreciated. Oh well.

Loved your video! There is some terrific advice here. The only area where you and I part ways is when it comes to the decorations. Thanksgiving is supposed to be an autumnal holiday, celebrating the "harvest home." I still want my fall decorations up for Thanksgiving. You know that song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas"? The first day of Christmas is December 25, and the last day is either January 5 or January 6, depending on the year. In many churches, this is known as the Feast of the Epiphany. If you read the New Testament, the Wisemen were not there at the manger -- they found Mary and Jesus some time after. So in my family, we put decorations up December 1st, and don't take them down until after January 5. This gives us a full month to enjoy them.
@jennywaterswellness24 күн бұрын
Since we don’t have Thanksgiving at home, I like to decorate early but get that that’s not everyone’s preference. We still celebrate the Epiphany at our church too! Have a blessed holiday!

I take the lamp off a table in the family room, cover it to the floor with a holiday tablecloth. We skip the bottom section of our 8ft Christmas tree, stick the rest of it in the base, and put that on the table. It ends up the same height. Saves hauling the table to the basement and is easier to decorate. This also works if you have toddlers.

In 2020 I sent out 50+ xmas cards, and got 4 or 6 in return...after I had the pictures done, printed the cards, addressed all the envelopes and bought a ton of stamps...after that I realized I didn't have as many "friends" as I thought I did and wasn't willing to spend all that money again. I have given up putting out all of the decorations. I put the tree up on November 10 because I like to enjoy it for a longer time. This year I will cover it to keep the dust off and leave it up in the family room. I have given away some of the decorations. I will be having a meeting with the family about gifts. The only thing that the adult children need is money .The grandchildren will get gift cards. That takes a lot of pressure off. I no longer do a turkey dinner with all of the trimmings at Christmas. I do it at Thanksgiving in October, and for Christmas we have only appetizers, including my Mom's tourtiere recipe, and desserts. So much easier at Christmas. It's supposed to be about getting together, celebrating the birth of Jesus, and enjoying the day, not stressing, over-eating, and being exhausted.

I just turned 60. After 20+ years as a single mom of 3, I am TIRED! It is a lot of work creating memories for the family. I continue to evaluate, but here are my changes (so far!) As I can find myself alone on holidays, I work to prevent self-pity: 1. I packed up the kids' ornaments (they each received a special one yearly) and gave them to each child. No more to buy, and no making me sad for the old days when "the kids were home." 2. Ditto their Christmas book collections (but I admit I miss them!) 3. I purchased just a few new ornament sets in a different color. Now I am hand-making ornaments (as I feel like it!) each year to add to my tree. So far I have made pom-pom garlands, embroidered mittens, and beaded spool ornaments. It's something new just for me. 4. I always, always wanted Christmas lights but couldn't afford them. Now I can. For the last 2 years I have hired someone to put up a string of lights along my roofline, and I just add a lighted wreath. They bring me joy! 5. Baking? Very, very little. Never enjoyed it, don't want to eat it. 6. My kids do Thanksgiving Day with their in-laws, so I am alone. I am trying to make it special by making it my Christmas decorating day so I have something to look forward to and don't just mope! 7. I have simplified gifts - one per family. Last year I bought charcuterie boards. This year I'm feeling creative and so I'm making "Let's Stay Home" kits. Adding things as the whim takes me: popcorn and cocoa; gingerbread-making house kits I found at 40% off, cozy socks. 8. I am having just a small gathering of friends over the week after T-giving. I will use my otherwise-languishing Christmas dishes, and it will satisfy my social craving. 9. Card making is my hobby, so I still send those...but no letter or long messages! ( I also make some for residents on a local memory care unit in memory of my mother.). As long as it is still fun, I will create them. 10. I've always loved tradition; it seemed an anchor in our otherwise-chaotic life. But I am learning the importance and value of flexibility and guess what? I can still enjoy the holiday and celebrate Christ's birth without a huge Christmas feast or piles of presents!

The main thing I did that completely transformed my holiday season is - I generally removed myself from the commercial side of Christmas - i.e. compulsory gift-giving and massive consumerism. Now, granted, I don't have kids so this wasn't as challenging for me as it might be for others. My extended family did bristle at my decision, but I held firm. It has completely liberated me and made the entire holiday season so much more relaxed and joyful. I still do other traditions, like putting up decorations, baking, singing Christmas carols, gathering with friends and family, etc., but not having to run around all month buying, buying, buying, wondering what to get people, and spending myself into debt, has made the holidays a complete joy for me!

I stopped the gifts for extended family years ago. My husband and I also do not exchange any gifts or do stockings and it takes a lot of pressure off. We are both content to treat ourselves if there is something we want or need. I keep our Christmas items to 3 totes and the main focus is the tree while keeping the house smelling wonderful with Nordstroms Christmas potpourri. I do very little baking anymore (that helps keep the weight from creeping up) and buy a small variety of baked goods and candies from local bakeries ahead of time to serve only Christmas week. The adult kids get a simple gift of money or gift cards, quality chocolate and this year they get an added travel journal. I'm quite a bit older than you and we don't have children. For Christmas we have a 5 ft. pre-lit tree that we put on a table, so it looks tall but it easier to deal with. I love Christmas cards, but my list is small because my circle of friends is small with most of them in different places. My siblings come for dinner on Christmas eve and have for years. We have our traditional Christmas meal. I bake cookies and the cake my mother used to make, but have cut down on the variety...just making favorites. We don't exchange gifts anymore. Instead, we each choose a charity and throw the names in a hat and put in money to go to the charity pulled out of the hat. None of us needs anything and there are plenty out there that do. Sorry this is long.

Two things my husband (now deceased) and I decided on very early were: We will go to family on Christmas Eve, but Christmas Day is for our family. We let the kids enjoy their Christmas morning and stay in their pajamas all day if they want. The other one is that when a tradition becomes an obligation, it is now a burden. Christmas is not a time for burdens. Christmas cards were one of those obligations that became a burden for me.

What a cozy Christmas to stay in your pajamas! Sounds like you and your husband were purposeful on creating memories! I love that- traditions shouldn’t be burdens!

Scrooge moment: Honestly I just wish people would stop “personalizing” cards with photos of their whole family, often in summer vaca etc. I just don’t care that much to see, and people seem like they’re trying hard to seem relevant and exciting. Goes for the form letters to an extent, too. Like you’re trying to brag. If I don’t see you that much, I probably don’t care to, and if I do see you a lot, I don’t need a photo. A simple card wishing everyone a good year would be enough. Call me a grinch but that’s my Seinfeld outlook. Also a whole episode on Raymond, especially the end scene.
@jennywaterswellnessАй бұрын
I get that! I just watched a Hallmark movie about a neighborhood competition for the best Christmas letter. There was lots of embellishment of what the families had done that year. 🤣
@lisatuckett63869 күн бұрын
Absolutely agree! I miss the beautiful cards I used to get. Now everyone just sends out preprinted photo cards without even a real signature. I save the old pretty ones to display.

I’ll add that I stopped baking cookies. I have grown children who make their own cookies. They would eat a few on Christmas and I was left eating them sometimes until Valentine’s Day 🤦♀️ I can’t waste food lol. And Im not a fan of baked goods to begin with. I also give cash because my grown children buy what they really want. I’ve asked and they never have needed anything. It’s just easier than giving them an exchange errand to run because they’re busy in their own lives. I also gave up Christmas cards many moons ago! I have been fighting with myself not to decorate too early but maybe I will 🤔 I take things down over New Year mainly because I have more time off to do so.

You had me till the last one. I don’t know how taking down the decorations Christmas night or on the 26th would help. In fact that absolutely would make it worse for me as I’m sure it would for many. All that time & effort just to take down 2 1/2 weeks later, disassembling Christmas on the 25th after a long day celebrating, not being present to enjoy my family & friends during the evening because I have to take down Christmas. Nope, I’m going to be present with my family on the 25th, take a breather on the 26th and then start taking down Christmas.

you're so right about overdoing the Holiday eating; Halloween is over but the left-over candy is going to be the Holiday candy this year. I'll admit to continuing the eating of it, but I have worked really hard at making 2024 my year to rid myself of extra weight and I have been successful so far. I want to finish the year on a high note, so I am committed to not doing the same level of baking as I have done in previous years. I will make a pie for dessert, but not all the cookies I usually make.

Great video. Because of our cat we haven't decorated for three years. At first I was sad about it, because I love the decorations so very much. Now it's okay, only problem is that I have 20+ bins to get rid of. We don't even do presents anymore. We don't need or want anything. If we do we just buy it through the year. I still send cards, but it's only like 8 of them.

My birthday is at the beginning of December, but I’m done with Christmas period. It’s gotten too commercialized and it’s lost its meaning. I don’t enjoy it anymore. I'm a mom. I signed up for the role of Christmas cheerleader. I set the tone and traditions for my family's holiday season. Taking a few more spins around the sun, putting me in the middle-age bracket, doesn't change anything. I detest that apathetic attitude. The show must go on. If it's too much for you, don't do it. Don't use your age as an excuse.

As mothers we think we have to do it all. Why? Probably because no one else will.😫😂 I have an autoimmune disease with chronic pain so I haven’t always been able to do what I want to. I’ve let some things slide and have given myself grace instead of feeling guilty every Christmas. My husband is very helpful but when it comes to gifts, decorating, baking, sending cards it’s always been me. When my son got older I didn’t worry as much. If the house isn’t decorated like I would like I just let it go. This year I suspect we will do more as our son is married now and they live with us. My daughter in law is amazing and I know she will be a huge help. We can always start new traditions.🥰

Thanksgiving and Christmas both, hold very sad distressing memories for me. I'm not obligated to celebrate either one due to having no kids or spouse, so I do the Festivus thing instead, whatever I decide to do or not do is up to me. I also do not like being made to feel guilty by co-workers for not celebrating, especially the Secret Santa thing which is ridiculous. We are all adults, why do we have to do Secret Santa? It's a load of BS. Festivus For The Rest Of Us. 🤨🤬💯
