Very much getting Ian Malcolm vibes from a lot of these. Clearly the people behind the remakes were too preoccupied with whether they could remake these films, they didn't stop to consider whether they should.

Last year (2022) was one of the best for horror films, yet most of the highly regarded ones were original, not remakes or sequels. There were pretty well received remakes and sequels (Hellraiser, Scream 5 and Prey), and also disappointments (Halloween Ends, Texas Chainsaw Massacre). But most of the outstanding ones were originals (X/Pearl, Barbarian, The Menu, Smile). I'll take more of the latter group, please.

The best and worst aspect of this list is that the horror movies used practical effects more than CGI but the remakes and reboots will most assuredly not follow the same route. I can already see a CGI Pumpkinhead being used and desperately trying to look scarier than the OG Pumpkinhead

Couldn't agree with you more. The B-grade effects and 80's setting are what give the movie a lot of its charm, any attempt to update it will inherently ruin it. The same with the Toxic Avenger. First of all, you can't have a Toxic Avenger movie that isn't written by Lloyd Kaufman. Secondly, Troma movies are so good because they are independent movies that don't ascribe to Hollywood sensibilities. By making a big budget remake, which it can't be low budget with the likes of Kevin Bacon, Peter Dinklage and Elijah Woods attached, they will assuredly ruin everything about the original which makes it good. It has 32 people listed under visual effects crew and 5 under special effects. The original had one guy, Matthey West, and he was listed as a special effects assistant.

An American remake of Speak No Evil makes little sense when you consider it's a satire on Scandinavian PC-culture and social norms. I find it hard to believe such traits would translate smoothly to another setting. Americans aren't afraid to tell strangers to f*ck off if necessary.
@FreyjaJ

I thought the same thing. It's so pointless! There are so many good ideas and stories that have yet to be used in films but instead of giving us something new and interesting they just keep churning out the same tired tales and tropes because they think it's always sure to pay off, despite the successes we've seen lately with more original content. It makes no sense.

I have some trauma from the movie Arachnophobia. Because of it I actually developed that fear. I watched it for the first time in middle school in a shop class and one of the students did a dick move and tickled the back of my neck causing me to scream and jump 3 feet. Which of course resulted in everyone laughing at me. I was afraid of spiders ever since. I've finally been able to get over that fear through education and research into spider behaviors and types. (thank god) Also, I found out that the small spiders used in the film were Avondale spiders (Delena Cancerides), a harmless species from New Zealand that were provided by Landcare Research in Auckland. Despite their fierce appearance, this spider is a docile member of the crab-spider family and is, in fact, harmless to humans. They're still creepy af though. :p
@dizzysic66

Same. Born in '89. The movie was enough to spark my phobia. I've gotten over it now or at least only feel a little creeped by an actual spider crawling on and biting me. I mean, I watch some pretty gnarly stuff (as I'm sure most of us have, mainstream horror alone) that doesn't affect/effect me like Arachnophobia did.

Ugh, I saw it once (for Julian Sands, and only for him, lol), and it is still the most disturbing film ever for me (which is quite a feat, given the long list of disturbing movies I've seen) purely due to my actual phobia, which I already had prior to watching. They're just so creepy and no amount of education about them or appreciation for the important roles they play in their respective ecosystems has ever overcome my admittedly (mostly) irrational but deeply entrenched fear of them. I respect them, but I will also literally immediately leave any area in which one or more of them are present because eeewwwwwomfg the horror.

My take on these remakes: Speak No Evil: Why? The original was perfect Faces Of Death: 🤣These were awful to begin with can't get worse The Strangers: Haven't seen the first but liked the sequel so why not The Toxic Avenger: Perfect the way it was remaking it unless Troma does it will be pointless sometimes schlock is perfect Night of the Comet: Loved this as a teen was perfect for the 80's interested to see what a 21st Century update can do Bird With The Crystal Plumage: Argento is one of my favorite directors so intriguing but won't be as good American Giallo is never as good Cube: another just fine the way it is leave it alone Pumpkinhead: sadly one I've missed but considering the opinion of those who've seen it best left alone Witchboard: Here is one that could stand a good update! I say go for it!!!! Arachnaphobia: Love this movie!!! If you haven't seen this do it now!!! Scared a remake would just make all the spiders c.g. they weren't in the original so good 😎!!! If you are scared in anyway of spiders the end will terrify you. Just my opinion, what do y'all think?

And I think it should rank alongside the other great redneck horror classics: Two Thousand Maniacs, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Hills Have Eyes, the Wrong Turn series and, lest we forget, Deliverence! Remakes in and of themselves aren’t the problem. People wondered why films like The Thing and The Fly were being remade at the time. Remakes have a place where the original either didn’t have the budget or tech ability to live up to the idea or a wonderful film just never found an audience the first time around. Remakes of films which still have an audience, did well and didn’t suffer due to technology deficiencies are pointless (eg the strangers). Not all are cash grabs.

Pumpkinhead is one of the few films that could probably use a remake. While I love the original film, that's probably due mostly to nostalgia...and the sequels are godawful. The Pumpkinhead creature, imho, is one of the most wicked ever put to film. I'd like to see him in a movie w/ great effects. Not that the original movie didn't have great effects. It definitely did. ...but Pumpkinhead looks like he could run about 50 mph and cover the distance of a football field in 3 or 4 leaps. They simply couldn't do that back in the 80s and today they can.

A remake of night of the comet. Humph. Oh well. Maybe Kelley Maroney can get a cameo. I don't want them to remake Waxwork, my favorite 80's cheese fest. But part of me wants to see how they WOULD do it. For pure curiosity.

Waxwork! It's so ridiculous but I still kind of love it, especially the werewolf and vampire segments. A remake would probably be awful...but I'd probably still watch it.

Night of the comet should be left alone. It's charm of the decade was what made it special. A remake has strong " the craft remake" result hovering over it.

Part of the charm of Night of the Comet that they will probably be unable to recapture is the cast. Catherine Mary Stewart of course (same year as The Last Starfighter came out too), but Robert Beltran, Kelli Maroney, Mary Woronov were all at the top of the B movie game at the time. You know they're just going to try to wedge in bigger names like they're doing with Toxic Avenger. I am not looking forward to either.

I've not seen Faces Of Death (though know of it) and I think that's a pretty nifty premise, highly relevant to today's online world and the age of misinformation. Most of the rest just sound like cash-grabs or original ideas attaching themselves to existing IPs to get more interest.

Ive been waiting forever for them to remake Curtains. It really needs a good remake. The original is a good movie but the ending needs to be redone since its like 2 different endings put into one since that movie went through so many writers directors rewrites and rush to finish. Like the ending of the original is like was it an after the fact or the movie never really happened she was nuts. So a remake retooling can really give it the special treatment.
