A quiet place is definitely up there for me too. Also, I found out today that in hereditary, the little girl was not special needs but in fact the very demon that showed itself at the end. She was a demon the entire time. Crazy.

Mama is such a tragic villain (just like The Woman in Black who had a similar backstory). She was born in a time where society didn’t have the scientific advancements in medicine and mental health care that we in the modern day do, so she was wronged by being put in an asylum (famously known for mistreatment of those put in them). Then when she became pregnant, she was wronged twice more. She was wronged by having her baby taken away, and wronged because it was considered shameful for her to have a baby out of wedlock when she was most likely r*ped or at least taken advantage of. Then she can’t even die with her baby or even be given the dignity of being buried with her baby or the dignity of her baby being buried at all. And Before I Wake is so sad because of all of the trauma and unhealthy grieving within the movie. It’s sad to see the mother be unable to move on because she’s stuck on blaming herself for something that wasn’t her fault. It’s upsetting to see the mother take the easy path and use the foster son as a drug, a conduit to “see” her dead son again while hurting the foster son emotionally due to not quite viewing him as a human or a different child because she doesn’t want to move on from her own grieving. And the reveal of what the monster was and how it can be connected to how the foster mom was treating the foster son was tragic.
