One of my donkeys saved my little daughter from an epileptic episode. She was out in the paddock when she had a seizure and dropped to the ground. The donkey lowered her head so she could grab its mane and get to her feet. The donkey made a really loud distress call to send me running to the rescue.

My family had a rescue donkey for a few years. After a bunch of rehab on her hooves, she was quite sassy, good at grazing, and made excellent fertilizer. Her most useful quality was as security. Any stranger even thinking of shenanigans would be discovered and announced. Announced! If she went on longer than our neighbor thought was correct, he'd get in his truck and come over. He thought she was the bees' knees, and she thought he had treats. Perfection!

If you asked the donkey they will tell you that they are always smarter than you. The secret is to get them to think it was their idea to do what ever it is you want them to do. They out right love to be helpful unfortunately their helpfulness can be quite destructive.

My two are pretty smart, I trained them to get up on 4X4X1 foot tall boxes, count to 3 with their hoof, and take a cracker out of my mouth. They're very protective over their cat, but he bosses them around and get along great together. My smaller Donkey warned me of a large Rattlesnake 8 feet away coming right at me that I didn't see. Donkeys can read your mind and see behind them. They are smarter than horses, now I'm going to hear it.

A donkey can be a formidable adversary to predators. But I witnessed the aftermath of an attack on a medium size pet donkey by a bulldog. I don't think it even tried to fight back. My uncle had a Donkey, it was either a Donkey or a Mule; I can't remember which, and she was a royal pain in the ass. Yes, pun intended. She got the horses into all kinds of trouble, including figuring out how to unlock the gate to the pasture, and leading the horses out onto the country highway by my uncle's house. Not too mention going after a calf one time for some reason. I'm not saying Donkeys and Mules cannot be good to have around, but this one in particular just caused all kinds of trouble, so much so my uncle had to sell her eventually.

You got to get them young and you have to get two of them. They get really depressed being alone. Wild Donkeys are pretty fast, I have two and they can really move. Mine aren't really wild, they learn tricks quickly. You might want to have someone round a couple up and halter break them. It's not good to leave the halter on them unattended so they can get hung up on something.

The one about what donkeys are called around the world was really pointless in its place you could have says how their small hooves make them really nimble in really rough terrain. You could also have expanded on their diet where no only can they survive where no horse can but multiply as they are far more extremely rugged than the horse is. As for being guard animals if that is what you are looking for you want a jenny (female) and not a Jack (functional male) or a john (non-functional male) as jennies are far more protective as they have a far more maternal instinct than jacks or johns have to other species. Now if you only have the choice of a jack or a john you want a jack as jacks are more aggressive to threats than johns are.

Mules unlike horses will not over eat, nor drink, at the end of the day. A mule will not do anything it thinks is stupid. You can't make it. It's also the reason who ever is leading those dude ranch groups uses horses, a mule will freeze, make noises, at dangerous situations, another mule will take noticed, follow suit. A horse will ignore it, you can ride the horse, go back to the mule. Another reason mules are used in trails, with tourists riding, is because of they are very sure-footed over horses. Horses can over eat, drink, to the point of seriously injury, death, it will run to death, it will go over a cliff, a mule is simply brighter. Other than lacking the speed of a horse over distance, the ability to make it go, go beyond what they will survive, a mule is what you want vs going through the desert on a horse with no name. Skip the horse, donkey, you want a mule.

Went to fishing pond where owners had wild donkeys from BLM in Neveda. One jack came over pawing and snorting. Poped it on nose. Left tackle box for awhile and he came over and pissed on it. Hawing on the way back with cattle😊

Be careful with donkeys, they will attack and try to kill. Cattle farmers use them for predator control. Not just kicks they will bite you and shake you like a rag doll
