I think you're using the eSIM number for iMessage. Settings > Messages > Send & Receive . If you did, when others send you iMessage from their iPhone and if you do not have iMessage not available (may be, coz of data is not available) then you cannot receive message. Go to Settings > Mobile data or Cellular > Allow Mobile Data Switching > Turn On if other number was chosen already. If others send normal SMS, you should receive messages regardless of data availability. If sender (iPhone) doesn't have data available, iMessage cannot be delivered to you. They need to go to settings > Messages > Send as SMS > Turn On. Try this and let me know
