Saw Orca in the theater, and there's a very memorable line in it that has stuck with me. Richard Harris is in the Church confessional, and he asks the priest, "Father, can you commit a sin against an animal?" The reply was, "You can commit a sin against a blade of grass, my son." Meaning of course, it's all about your mindset, and whether you're being cruel and thoughtless in the act.

I’ve never considered Orca to be a “Jaws” rip-off, because it has nothing in common with Spielberg’s film nor Peter Benchley’s novel, aside from being sea creatures. Orca is more of an updated and inverted Moby Dick, and was adapted from a novel by Arthur Herzog. Audiences felt sympathy for Orca, but feared Jaws.
@loschrodproductions4519 Жыл бұрын
Actually, the Orca Novel is a novelization of the movie
@medes5597 Жыл бұрын
But Orca only exists because De Laurentis told the producer to find "a bigger and deadlier fish than the great white" and the producer and screenwriter were both picked after they said they'd seem Jaws. It doesn't feel the same and id argue its got more going for it than most cash in films but its an open and shit rip off imo.
@Hektols3 жыл бұрын
Orca was unfairly treated on it's day as a Jaws clone, it was not, it was a story of revenge. Unlike other movies the audience rooted for the non-human antagonist.
@jackj98163 жыл бұрын
Nah I always go for the animals
@Aster_Iris3 жыл бұрын
Well, to be fair, it was originally intended as a knockoff, given the initial idea was "find me a fish that's even meaner than the great white shark and we'll make a movie about it", but it's clear to see during production it became so much more than what it started off as. There's good reason why some say that it's actually even better than Jaws (while it is pretty much apples and oranges, I am somewhat part of that crowd since it's such an emotionally impactful movie. It's not as well made, we've got fairly cheap greenscreens vs Spielberg, regarding production quality it's no contest, but the story it tells hits harder and has more complexity IMO).

Yet we continue to call them whales, even after we scientifically proved that they are part of the dolphin family.
@SnakeRoadComicsOfficial36773 жыл бұрын
So Maneater but with an Orca?
@Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent3 жыл бұрын
@@lutherheggs451 1. Orca's are still by many considered whales due to yes the mistake that they are whales by the name Killer Whale and also cause Orca's are Giants compared to the more human sized Dolphins. The size and look does make them appear as small whales. Humans are kinda unable to grasp the reality of some things being above whats normal especially if they don't take the time to study it. Some tend to only accept what they are told or written. Killer Whale: Okay its a Whale that kills. Many humans go simply by the pure concept that the simple answer is the best answer. Its difficult for many to grasp the reality of some things like a oversized dolphin that hunts whales, sharks, and anything else that it finds interesting. Here is what your average mundane human that never went to aquirum or bothered to look up actual stuff online would think. Whale a large creature that is about the size of a boat or larger usually friendly except for a few exceptions. Massive and powerful Dolphin a fast animal about the size of a human or smaller and is friendly not that powerful and need large groups Killer Whale: About the size of a small boat powerful, intimidating, kills pretty much anything it can get its teeth on. It has been reported to kill whales as well. okay it must be a predatory small whale cause dolphins don't get that big. 2. Ancient Sailors and up to even the modern era actually had reconized them as Dolphins or porpoise for quite a while. They had identified them not as Killer Whales but as Whale Killer. Which is a fairly accurate description of them. It was known that during that whale hunts Orcas would sometimes help Whalers hunt down specific Whales and well the Whale was being butchered, the Whales would wait until the humans would cut out the tongue for them to eat or specific parts. Its likely the term Killer Whale was created cause some journalist describing the Orca's felt it sounded cooler.

Actually saw "Grizzly" in theaters when I was 8-yrs old and it scared me. "Orca" was and is my favorite of all the "Jaws" knockoffs, the movie introduced me to Richard Harris and what a great actor he was, even when he was in less than great material. Also, was a big fan of Ennio Morricone's score for the movie, actually bought an LP back in the 70's that featured his soundtrack for "Orca". Never even heard of "Tentacles" before in my life until I saw this video. I have to check that one out now. Among the many blatant "Jaws" ripoffs contained in the movie "Tentacles", couldn't help but notice that Bo Hopkins was featured in the film who was also apart of the cast in "American Graffiti" which co-starred Richard Dreyfuss. I guess Paul Le Matt was unavailable at the time.

Incidentally, orcas have been observed to obsess and become vengeful. We have had an issue over the past year off the northern coast of Spain with a pod that apparently had a bad encounter with the motor of a fishing trawler or something and began attacking every boat coming through the area, which sees a lot of traffic by competitive canoa racers. A lot of them got quite a fright, being rammed and coming in with their rudders chewed off. ;)

I remember seeing only a small part of Orca when I was like...8 at the oldest (the part I recall the most was where the pregnant female orca is dragged onto the boat and miscarries, which I only remember seeing as this horrific mass of blood and flesh bursting out of the whale), and I'm pretty sure it scarred me for life. I couldn't go near a swimming pool unless there were other people in it for years after that, especially if it was dark, as I seem to recall more than a few shots in dark water during the attacks in the film. I think I find Orca infinitely more disturbing than Jaws in many ways, both for the fact that the orca is so much more clearly plotting and doing this deliberately than the shark did anything, and because we're given a clear and rather horrifying reason *why* it's doing these things. Fun fact: the actual living whales in the film were apparently not from Sea World! They were actually from Marineland of the Pacific (which would later be bought out by Sea World, but was in LA, and had been around since before Disneyland), and Marine World Africa USA, now known as Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.

I remember seeing both Tentacles and Grizzly at the cinema. Orca is in an entirely different league, a well made film with an extremely powerful message...

Timothy Bottoms had an impressive start appearing in The Last Picture Show and The Paper Chase. But in the 1980s, his career hit the skids. Tentacles is so aggravating. Henry Fonda, John Huston and Shelly Winters all seem like they're going to be major characters but half-way through they just disappear. And yes, that huge hat is something else. Orca, I like, because the humans are the villains. And it really shows the dangers of game fishing as the Richard Harris character doesn't understand the significance of orcas in the oceans.

Any word on Kevin Smith's Moose Jaws? ..it's a glorious concept!

still in preproduction hell from what i can gather. i would guess it's probably a question of rounding up money after his last couple of movies didn't really make any.

The line on Moose Jaws from the Mooses mouth himself during the Q&A portion at a "J&SB Reboot" roadshow date is that the script is finished but it is on the back burner until "Twilight of the Mallratz" & "Clerks 3" are in the can. Even if it's worth the wait the moose is still gonna look fake, "snoogens".

I imagine it may be further delayed if the animated "Masters of the Universe" revival he is doing for Netflix is successful and gets more than 1 season. Though, if his newfound relationship with Netflix is successful it may be the vehicle for the next few features he has planned. However, in the past Netflix has already passed on a Mallratz sequel series and or film so i wouldnt put my eggs in that basket. But in truth, I would welcome new entries in the "veiwaskewniverse" and The Great North Saga(which began with the amazing"Tusk") on Netflix as opposed to the next "HappyMaddison" Netflix Original. 🤢

Am I the only one who thinks it's stupid that people consider Orca a Jaws ripoff? The only similarity is that the two films feature a large viscous sea animal that murders people
@nicholasambrose67443 жыл бұрын
I agree. Both movies have a very different feel. Orca has much more of an emotional element and a deeper storyline. Jaws was pretty much a monster movie with some adventure thrown in.

The fact that there are 10 rip-offs without any shark in them is wondrous.

For some reason when you said, Tanya Roberts, my mind flashed to Tanya Harding. I don't know why, but it was a moment of confusion for me as I wondered how those two things could be connected, and then you said, 'Too Soon', and I remembered how Tanya was declared dead before she was declared alive and then dead again. Good job.

Orca is actually a good movie in its own right. Not sure I'd say its a Jaws ripoff, considering its about a killer whale getting revenge on the man that killed his family. Kind of a reverse of the typical sea goin maneater trope

I Keep noticing Sopranos actors in old monster movies. First Richie Aprile was flying a plane in Monster Squad, and now Bobby Bacala senior in Blood Beach.
